Hey guys, last time I posted here was when I resoldered the wire that goes from the thermostat housing to the radiator fans. There was really no room to solder the wire because it was torn off all the way through to the socket, so I thought that could've been a problem, but my father has a knack in electronics and soldered it anyway. I thought it would work but the fans did not repond to the temperature. So then I went to the yard to grab another. Then soldered the new(old) wire then again, but again fans are not switching on. Any guesses as to why this is happening? I've asked my dad if he could make a switch at work so I can just switch the fans on manually.

the previous owner of my car couldn't get the fan working so he just wired it so it's permanently on when the ignition is on

Ok, you need to find the problem
Disconnect the fan switch, does it come on? With the wire broken it should stay on permanently
Check all your fuses, might have been disabled on purpose
Check if there is 12v at the fan
Put 12v on the fan to see if it works

That's what I wanted to do, but my father says the fan will have decreased life and break down because it's on ALL the time lol

Fan doesn't stay on with the switch off.
Fuses look good according to my father. The contacts look clean.
Will check if there's 12 V at the fan, but my battery is a full 12V.
I disconnected the wire that the fan needs to get energy from the battery and I put 12V to the fan and it does work. hmmmmm
Soooo, the fan should stay on with the thermostat fan wiring torn/broken/corroded etc?

YES! the fan should be ON with the sensor disconnected/broken wiring...its a safety thing.

-not big on the fan On all the time, i agree too much wear. but ill bet id last a long time. i wouldnt do it. Just my 2cents though
-if you wire in a manual switch you HAVE to remember to turn it on. Lots of people did this at the track and the same people were constanly going through motors, blowing hoses, ect. toyota already dummy proofed it why change it?

-have you done anything with the a/c system? reason i ask is that only 1 fan is for the engine (left), the other is for when you use the a/c (right), because of the extra draw on the motor. so when you delete the a/c system you need to jump a connection in the bay to get the fans to shut off. then both will work in unison like they should. i would imagine a fault in this part of the a/c system could cause the troubles described.

Nope haven't done anything to the A/C. It was 2 months ago, one day I had to pick my brother up, and left the car idle for about 20 mins I think it was, and then coolant started to drip. Then drove the car home lightly and drove it another mile or two the next day...lightly. Then started the car up again the next day, heard a grinding noise. Opened the thermostat housing and the second half the thermostat was gone. So I changed coolant fluids and did not find traces of the second half, but the coolant was kinda black. While I was putting the thermostat back on, I think I bent the thermostat fan wire a bit too much because I didn't see it was kinda in the way and it broke off. With that disabled, I drove the car about 5-10 miles a month after this incident and the fans have never turned on. The only thing I see in this, is that I believe the radiator fan stopped working on the day that I saw the coolant dripping, and I did absolutely nothing to the A/C or tinkered with anything else. hmmmmm?

I'll be sure to turn my fan on if I install a switch because I now have my eye on the temperature gauge since I don't have a working fan and I'm afraid of overheating. Which I almost did trying to find a place to park at school. Leaving the car on for more than 5 minutes without any wind to cool the radiator is scary. But the car is okay driving when moving ofcourse. I'm just not gonna drive it more than 20 miles lol.

a grinding noise would indicate a water pump issue. its the only moving part in the cooling system. maybe the missing piece went through it?

-iirc the wire for the sensor is +, the sensor fluctuates how much ground it has based on temp. no ground (disconnected) should = fan on. i think you have to make sure the wire is powered.....could be totaly wrong though. but i think thats the way it works.

I just had my water pump replaced in 2010 due to a seized gear and cracked into pieces :( I'm pretty sure the second half of the thermostat went through there though lol. Not good. I imagine some of the parts would clog some holes the coolant goes through :(
Okay I'll check if the fan is getting power. Although it did work when I gave it power from a separate source, so it must the wire in between?
I never liked working with electricals, but this problem solving stuff is giving me something to do and I MUST find the culprit! lol

    Small Update:
Started my car up the other day and sounded like there was no fuel going into the engine. The starter sounded wonderful, but the car sounded dry, I concluded it was the fuel pump that had given up. Then a day or two later I wanted to show my father what had happen to the car. Then sure enough, the car came into life...
    Lol

Now I don't want to drive this car and become stranded somewhere unexpectedly, so what should I check first just to make sure?

I dunno, we're having the same issues here with a ST162 Corona on my thread and replaced just about everything

Lol. I'm guessing something got loose and didn't power it. Or maybe a one in a million chance where the fuel pump couldn't catch the fuel? I just drove it to school right now it was working just fine. Still have to sort out the radiator fan problem though. I'll get to that sometime.

Check all your wires & connections
This one just won't start every now and then for no reason, there's no spark and the second you touch anything it works fine.
