lol just come down to the local junkyard here with a bunch of 5 speed GTS's. Then you could go GE, have the 5 speed, and best of all, meet me! :p :lachtot

So to my knowledge 3S-GE's have S53s or S54's? I was reading one of our threads here and read that GE's he saw had S53's. Sorry for all the question but I need to make sure since I'm going to be looking at a GTS Andrew mentioned before.

This thing is like within 10 miles from me. Thing is hasn't been running for 5 years. What do you guys think?

The 1.gen 3S-GE has S53, and the newer models have the S54 afaik. You're gonna be okay with both.

Go check it out. Maybe the reason the engine might not start might be because either of fuel lines are dirty and might need a tune up or something electrical. the latter happened to me when i got first wired up my jdm engine. Definitely get the s54, it's really great and durable.

Dropped off my brother near the mountains for his jog with his wrestling team. When came the time to pick him up I waited there for 15 mins, expecting his call. Then the hood started smoking. Looked at my temp and its say 10-20% over half, which usually doesnt happen, but was no where near red. I turned the car off. What do ya know, leaking coolant....

I feel bad for the nice new houses/asphalt road that I stained lol. I drove home with my hazards though going no more than 35mph.
Coolant was leaking from somewhere near that white coolant container thing near the speed actuator/headlights.
Car was fine the whole way.
I think idling the car will raise temps since theres no wind to cool it.
Plus my fans did NOT engage.
    They were working fine yesterday.

Need new tranny now this lol.
I hate keeping the Celica on the driveway. :sad :banghead

    Its the thermostat.
Where's the rest of the valve and spring?
Well, the car was hungry :/

Searched up the net for my situation, and it looks unheard of lol
Car has been running fine(considering there's pieces of it somewhere), but I can't help but think if it has damage some part of the engine.

Somebody cut it and threw the rest away!
Obviously had overheating problems, now you have a warmup and stability problem.
You shoulda pulled the wire and left the fan on!

It's common on race cars but not good on a daily running low revs and standing still etc
Plus the external block/head pipes must be closed for this to work properly -
Mafix & Jon will back me up here

I thought everybody knew by now NEVER to let the temp needle go past half!!??
This is how the gauges should look -
    [IMG]
Man I hope you didn't warp something :cry

    Boxes
    S53 - 2S, 3S-GE 86-89
    S54 - 3S-GE 90-93, 3/4/5S FE 86-93 (different starter/flywheel)
    S55 - 3-5S-GE/FE 94-00 (different starter/flywheel)

just pull the plug from the coolant temp sensor near the thermostat, i did that for my white celica over the summer and it didn't overheat once, the one time i tried to put it back on, it overheated. if you have temp problems it's probably a good thing to do

I just didn't expect it Stig. The one time I don't check my temperature, it goes. The car did seem to take a little bit longer to warm up before this happened, but I thought that it's because its a 24 year old car. I emptied the coolant and its just so dirty. Haven't much time to look at the car since my last post but, don't see any of the thermostat pieces anywhere. hopefully its nothing serious.

Won't that 'overcool' certain parts of the engine? If I have no choice I'd probably do it for a temporary fix.

When you bought it you should have serviced it and flushed/checked everything, that way you would have seen this and a lot of other potential problems.

Not digging at you, plenty of new owners reading this - your mistake could help somebody else

You won't - somebody modded it with a hacksaw, I think the fans have failed before.
You need to replace the fan switch and thermostat. While you're at it flush out the radiator
and motor/heater pipes with a hose and use plenty antifreeze in future

Yes, without a thermostat it could do real damage but for driving straight home - no problem

TIP - another "olde skoole" trick when your car is overheating.
Open the windows, turn up the heat and fan - helps cool the motor even further

I had the same problem with overheating not to long ago removed my thermostat it was
clogged up with some sort rubbish cleaned up and tested it by putting it inside a water kettle
when water got hot in kettle see started to open so it was all good then what I did next was
removed plug on the bottom the radiator drain all the water it was brown mixed with green it
must of had been anti freeze which never got to flow I then fitted back the thermostat hosing back with out the thermo closed tap and filled it up with new water started car up
for about 5min with out the radiator cap once warm I opened tap again on radiator it was
clean water coming out it closed it again removed top pipe and bottom pipe put a hose
pipe in the top pipe with flowing water started her up again let it run for another 10 min
with water flowing all the time what happened with that was clean water going in the top
hose and dirty water coming out the bottom for some time and I also went inside the and changed the heater control from cold to hot and vice verse and rev car in between after a while water just keep's running out clean by then motor should be clean then went back to radiator this time I removed it from car and cleaned that on it's own by laying it down pipe fittings facing up I fill it up using some swimming pool acid about 10mil mixed with water let that lay for a half hour pick it up moved it from side to side so that all the channel got the treatment drain all that still some rubbish came out of that rust color then
I put in the hose pipe on the top pipe again with clean water flowing all the time until clear
water was coming out the bottom now my radiator was clean as well then I replaced everything back pipe's thermostat one last thing before I filed it up with new water the
overflow pipe and bottle on the side of radiator cleaned that as well I came across that
the overflow pipe was also blocked had to unblock that as well then cleaned bottle as well
I now am happy touch wood the car as not overheated on me again I know this a long story but it might help some of you guy's out there I hope.

I gotcha with the new new owners and helping.
And we actually have owned this Celica for 24 years. The car has been well taken care of. It was just last year that the waterpump bearings desintegrated and I had it towed it to a trusted mechanic of my parents. So new coolant, new waterpump, new thermostat(?) Shortly after, the leaking coolant incident last I heard some grinding. I turned the car off, then turned it on again and grinding was gone. I'm pretty sure it was the thermostat lol. I don't understand why it would grind in there. I must have been driving with a faulty thermostat for about 2 months. Took about 7-10 mins to warm up everytime.

Nothing better than old school. That's a clever trick! Rob the engine's hot air and guide it away. Sucks to be doing that in 115 degree weather, but sucks even more to not have a moving car lol.

    @Fernando
Sounds like a good job. I appreciate the story. I should probably do this since my coolant was almost black as black lol.

    big question mark there too...

yeh for the unplugging the coolant temp sensor for the fan near the thermostat, i still had a thermostat in there. basically the coolant in the radiator is constantly being cooled down by the fan, but the thermostat still controlled when it needed to circulate the coolant around the system. the hot air method works wonders too! when my radiator exploded, i was able to keep the temp below 1/2 with probably no coolant in the system. heat all the way up + constant 30mph!

Hey guys an update. Sorry I haven't been on. Since I've spoken to all of you about the coolant, I haven't really driven Alexis. The only times I would drive her was when I'd pick up my brothers from school and drop people off, but drive no more than 5 miles from the house.

Coolant problem was solved, both the top and bottom radiator hoses get to temperature.
I'm still stumped on the radiator fans.... With the a voltmeter, yes the fan is still getting power, but for some reason the fan temp sensor thing that's plugged into the thermostat housing is not working, I even asked my dad to resolder it and all. Still nothing.
If I can recall the volt meter was telling me there was a short in the plug in? Then tried another time and the thing kept quiet. So I'm still unsure.
To make sure though I gave the fans 12 volts and sure enough, they started spinning.
    ??
Checked the relays, and they looked fine. I think.? So why aren't the fans engaging on desired temp?

The car never overheated though when I would drive it around, but I still will NOT drive this car too far. Plus the car is behaving differently than before. Might overheat.

THEN.......My alternator stopped charging the battery. Or shall I say the timing belt. It doesn't take too long after I remove the jumper cables from the battery, does it start to sound like a 20b rotary or a boxer subi engine. Then it starts popping and slowly dies. In conclusion it can't run on its own power. :(

So that's it, for a long time. Gotta focus on school, so I can get that 3SGTE :)
So I don't think I'm doing much to the car for 3-5 months :(
I washed the car though and made me smile because she still looks sexy assssss.........
    Happy trails guys.
