cant wait to see it with the engine in it. As for the JVC, great choice, that is what i ran in my celica before my stereo got jacked, (ironically one of the only times i left the faceplate in there and they left that) but i personally recommend re-wiring all the speaker wires if you ever upgrade your speakers, the 20GA or whatever it is just doesn't cut it for me. But like i said, cant wait to see the engine disassemble and install.

Oh man I can't wait either. It's funny because my new mechanics teacher is really into imports so he is really excited too. The speakers in there are aftermarket; not the greatest ones though but do sound pretty decent. They were put in before i got the car; I think my dad put them in when he had a stereo in there. Eventually I will re-wire all the wires, probably in the summer but for now I am just putting all my time towards the engine because I prefer to have a nice done up engine rather than a stereo system. As of now I don't have any plans to even wire in an amp or sub; just the 4 speakers and deck sound good enough.

Here's a little update on the engine:

I haven't done much because nothing is going easy it seems with this engine. It honestly took me 3 days to find the correct bolts just to mount the engine on a stand so I could work on it. I tried nearly every single bolt in my shop but with everything being imperial and the engine being metric nothing worked. So finally I went out and bought some. Went to 4 different stores before I found the right size, the people at all the stores kept wondering if I had the correct measurements and I assured them I did. The size is 12mm x 1.25 x 5in long; not a normal size. For 4 bolts it cost me $6.82; ouch.

I finally did get it mounted and then moved onto taking the valve cover off. Well well. I ended up using an impact screwdriver to take off the last screw because it was so ridiculously tight but even that didn't work, I just ended up rounding out the top of the screw. So I then just used a drill and drilled the top of the screw until the screw head broke off and just left the stud left; worked perfectly.

Today after lifting the valve cover off I moved onto taking the timing belt covers off and began taking the cam holders off (noob description of part - not sure what they are actually called) as well as taking all the bolts off that hold the manifold. Also Dallas began cleaning up the valve covers but as you'll see by the pictures did a not so good job; teacher says he has to help because he has nothing else to do that is why I am only giving him jobs that don't involve taking anything on the engine apart. I simply just don't want anybody helping me because I can't trust anyone to take things apart carefully because they just don't know how important this engine is to me so please don't think of me as an a-hole for doing that.

I'll post more pictures tomorrow and continue doing so so prepare for a wack load of pictures. So if you managed to read all that here are the pictures now. :D

If you look closely you'll see the stud left over from the VC screw; top left of picture.

All covered up for the night. Can't wait to get back at it tomorrow!!

Today I dropped German 11 so I am hoping my mechanics teacher will let me T.A during that block that way I'll still get credits and better yet...more time to work on the engine!

If you want to get the rest of that VC screw out, you could tighten 2 nuts over it and turn it out that way. Just a thought.
Also, I don't blame you for not trusting anyone else - no one's gonna be more careful than yourself. I'd do the same. Looking forward to the progress. Good luck :)

Thanks for the advice Rick, I'll have to give that a try. Yeah it's true. The only one I can trust is myself or someone who knows what they are doing like the members in this community.

Lol I'll keep everyone posted on the progress and I can assure you there will be tons of pictures!

    Cheers for now.

Hehe thanks bud. Yeah I got so into the tear down that I couldn't stop; I even dropped German 11 to have an extra block to work on it  ; there's a mechanics 10 class during that block so it worked out perfectly.

In a way its good that this week is spring break because I can work the whole week and make money for parts for the Celica but it's a whole week before I can work on the engine again; ughh it's killing me :( .

Got nearly everything off the block. Going to attempt to take the head off tomorrow if the tool I got today will work; keeping fingers crossed.

    Re: Tanner's '86 GT-S [Update - Mar.24.09] - 56k Beware!

    Update:

I got the whole engine disassembled today. The only thing left is the take apart the head and measure/clean everything up; but that'll be done a little later this week though. Didn't think I'd get much more than he head off today but heck I got it all done; surprised the heck out of myself and my teacher. For example this morning I memorized the order to take off the head bolts but not the crankshaft nuts (didn't think I'd get that far) so I had to run home and look up the order. Lol, as I was taking the front seal off for the crankshaft the bolt broke loose fast and I ended up smashing my thumb into the edge of the oil pan surface - it's quite sharp because I made a huge gash in my finger...not sure if I need stitches though; just wrapped it in 3 big bandaids.

Here are the current progress pictures - sorry for the blurry close ups; I am using a 2.0 MP cell phone camera  .

Well that's what I did today. Tomorrow I am probably going to start cleaning everything up ( Solvent tank then sandblast ) so I'll have a little update tomorrow.

Feel free to leave comments and/or tips!

ha congrats skippy, im quite impressed. the block looks decent i must say, but judging by the carbon on those pistons id say the compression rings were toast...get an inside mic and measure that bitch... bore should be like 3.39", check for taper as well.. the crank also looks like she has some glazing, crocus cloth will fix that. keep it up buddy!!! oh and about your hand... get more bandaids... it never stops now...lol

Thanks bud. I'll be sure to measure everything in the coming days. Where can I get some of that crocus cloth? Canadian Tire? Ugggh, yeah I think I'll need many more bandaids...lol I'm doing the engine a good deed and she turns on me and makes me bleed :( .

    Re: Tanner's '86 GT-S [Update - Mar.24.09] - 56k Beware!

Okay these will be the last pictures for today; I swear!

I took my front license plate off the other day to see what it would look like and I think it makes the car look tons better so I kept it off  . After staring at it for a bit I got an idea. Instead of drilling new holes for my "will-get-one-day" fog lights I was thinking of using the holes for the license plate and mounting them there. I might make some kind of bracket that'll offset the fog lights further outwards. What do you guys think? Of course it's just a thought for now.

    Here are some pictures........again:

    3rd mirror....what the?

    Wait.....not done yet  .

    Little story -

When my brother and I went down to Vancouver to get my engine I realized I need a tarp to put the engine on so we stopped at the Wal-Mart in Merrit to get one. As we pulled into the parking lot we saw this Celica GT; sweet...as we drove by it there was a "FOR SALE" sign in the window so I hit the brakes and pulled up beside it. We called the number but no answer so we went inside the store. We got there a bit before 9am so the store should have been closed but the doors were unlocks so we decided to go inside. Before we got far the manager told us we had to leave because it was not opened yet so we did. After getting the tarp and returning back from Vancouver we stopped in Merrit to get gas, drinks and call the number again. She answered and a few minutes later we all met up at the local Time Horton's. We stood and watched as the car door opened...who was it? THE MANAGER WHO KICKED US OUT OF WAL-MART lolol  . So anyway the next day we returned to Merrit and my brother bought the '87 GT for $400...not too bad.

Here is what he got. There is quite a bit of rust but the engine runs verrry smoothly; pulls harder than my GT-S...go figure.

Hmm....I think this is the only picture that shows the biggest rust spot on my car.

So we now have two Celica's in our driveway. Just so you know we are going to fix up his GT....eventually. Even have plans of putting my 3S-GE in there after I'm done my swap...up to him though.

Okay I am done today for posting pictures...I swear.
