Cheers mate, looking into it, swapping over the housings for the exhausts is do able, so can make a good turbo from the two and then will use the bigger supra turbo as a base for a real meaty hybrid.

    gotta love turbos lol

Cheers Stig, The worse thing abut swaping the turbo on and off is the fact somuch has to come of it, before you can get at it.
I find that taking it off complete with downpipe, and exhaust manifold is the best.

Still at least no bolts are rusted in.

The spliting off the housing from turbo is a worry, the problem is getting the bolts un done and then pulling the housing off.

Just dont have the cash to get another turbo just yet... not sure if I would stay CT series, as in two minds about the Toyota series for next year. I may go Garret turbo route and race the car in the british Hill climb series with a one off time attack entry.

Cars hey!! what with your and Revs HGs its always something. ;)

I hear guys complaining about the GTE manifold bolts all the time?

Some tips & ideas for general info (you probably know all this already)
    1) Replace, replace, replace - always go higher tensile if possible, Titanium if money is no object
    2) Oil them before fitting, it's the bolt stretch that holds it tight, not the threads
    3) Only use hex sockets (impact type)
    4) Use your left hand to hold the socket down, wack the ratchet handle with your right,
if there's no room, just give the handle a quick jerk - most nuts/bolts will crack once,
sometimes twice. Then use slow turning to loosen till it frees up.
    5) If it still resists, let it cool for a few minutes and come back to it, forcing a sticky nut/bolt
will overheat it and end up snapping, Turning it backward before proceeding helps to "clean" the threads

    Good tips :D

To be fair, I have had my engine stripped down and back together so many times now, everything is almost new.

I always use new lock washers, with things such as the d/pipe and turbo bolts.

The issues with the manifold and turbo exhaust housing are well documented, due to the casting design.

Hence me stocking up on parts :D

I have purchased that engine off betsy 2, so I now will have a spare bottom end, just in case. It will also be a great base for me to under take my first ever 3sgte re build. :D

oh nice you got betsy's motor. and it's fairly local too.

what part of the turbo are you not allowed to change in your series? i forgot.

Vehicles must retain standard turbocharger housings – internal turbo modifications such as hybrids are allowed, the turbocharger must retain an internal wastegate.
Thats the key reg, but I find it a bit limiting on options, hence my thoughts to move to a diff series for 2010 with a diff turbo set up.

yea its great on the engine. joins my collection :D

Re: My 88 GT4 ST165 Sprint / track car, "old" new pics update

3 options i have for you then for staying in your current series
    1. i have access to my old 50 trim, it won't be cheap but the guy that bought it is parting everything out because of job loss and i know that exhaust housing is mint.
    2. get a supra housing. it's the same thing of the 1jz i believe. should be cheap.
    3. twin entry or 20b. are they really going to know? you'll have to change the exhaust manifold and the downpipe for either one.

    really tired of that series?
i've been super happy with my setup and i really recommend it. i wouldn't go with the same trim turbo i have (monster thing!) but i can get you all the parts you need. you'll just have some fab work to do. other options i would look at are the gt28 (for auto-x) kits from KO racing or Speedsource.

    Keep it up!

Any chance of welding/machining/re-enforcing those cracked housings?

maybe Stig, but there are a number of second hand std turbos I can rob the housing from.

It cracks in a line from the wastegate housing to the edge, not sure how effective a repair would be?

Re: My 88 GT4 ST165 Sprint / track car, "old" new pics update

Well Saturday was fun. All the weather reports said it would rain hard Saturday night, so we gambled on maximising points for the car. We kept the set up soft at the rear, swapping the rear arb to its soft setting. We did not fit the uprated front arb, even though on a smooth grippy race track it should work, the aim was to give a soft, controllable set up for the cold wet conditions we thought we would face. We did not even take my worn R888 rubber figuring it would be pointless in the wet. toetap05 (in hindsight that was an error lol)
We drove up to the track in pouring rain, so far so good, practice was wet, with a lot of drivers struggling, their track set ups, too stiff, on the green kart track, with the MR2 drivers unable to use full throttle and even the Stiffly sprung GT4s sliding and slipping all over the place.
After an early spin, we were happy, the set up gave me confidence, and I was notably faster in the sweeping last corner than nearly all of my rivals.
But then we waited, from 4pm to 6pm, for it to get dark. And the damn weather just got nicer and nicer. By the time of the first run the wind had dried the track and we were royally screwed banghead banghead banghead banghead ugh cuss
So now I was in trouble, to win the CCUK championship, I had to finish within 8 points of my rival, and he had track slicks and a dry weather coilover set up.....
I tried my hardest, but now my road tyres and soft set up was at sea, we reduced the pressures to 20psi, and changed the front shocks setting, but the limited time between runs and dark pits stopped us swapping out the rear arb setting
I came off track on one run, smashed though a chicane after loosing it under brakes on a further run, only killing cones thank god. But it was slipping away, Craig my rival was nearly 2 seconds quicker than me and drivers who I would normally beat were between us…My turbo was smoking the oil leaking onto the downpipe; it was all getting a bit to much.
Last ever run of 09... I dropped the clutch at 5.5k, lit the tyres and went for it, flat shifted the whole way round the track, I just had to get a better time.
Over the line, I had found almost a full half second, not good enough to beat Craig, but enough to be within 3 places of him and win the championship!!!
Car is filthy dirty, a bit tired but we drove home winners... Ready for the winter re build and hitting new heights in 2010!

Re: My 88 GT4 ST165 Sprint / track car, "old" new pics update

Sorry its been a bit of a while.
Car will be on the road this weekend for a last blast, then the work comences

I have just sorted my brakes.
Bretski is selling up a lot of his TTE cars parts and I have just got these bad boys.
ST205 calipers, 315mm discs, alloy bells and brand new red stuff EBC pads
I should collect these in the next week or so.
Will sell my old set up to help pay for them
In addition to those new front discs, we will replace the brake lines, remove the ABS pump and fit a brake bias adjuster
service item over the winter will be new rear hand brake shoes and maybe EBC rear discs and pads too.

    Suspension wise
Front of the car is staying the same, only addition will be some camber bolts, so we can increase the front camber
rear wise, the rear subframe will be dropped, new rear poly bushes fitted, then the rear suspension will be fully poly bushed, along with new supra metal bushes too.
Rear shocks will be KYB AGXs with the weld in mod.
I cannot afford Full coilovers at present, maybe in 2011

    Driveline
Rear diff will be swapped for my group A rally LSD diff one, and a new solid mount will be fitted.

    Engine
Cylinder head will be replaced with my re conditioned one, with new valves, porting and polishing and shimless bucket conv for the 3sge cams.
A straight 3sge side feed intake will be fitted too.
The Turbo will have to be, because of budget issues, the existing CT26 Supra hybrid, with new oil seals fitted, should give about 350bhp @1.4 bar
The FMIC pipe work will change a little bit.
The sump will get dropped and new bearings fitted
A new TRD head gasket will be fitted along with new gaskets for the rest of the top end.
The T-VIS will be modified and the valve flaps removed
New heat wrap on the downpipe and exhaust
EGT, water temp, oil pres, oil temp and AFR gauges will be fitted
Oil filter finally re located and new oil cooler fitted
New engine mounts will also be fitted

I have the spare complete engine from Betsy 2, which will I will either keep as a drop in spare for mine, or if funds allow, work on a full bottom end re build, new pistons etc to go in mine for 2011.

    Body work
The car will be stripped of all graphics, every single graphic will come off, and The ST162 front lamps will be re mounted, as will the front grill. A front splitter will be fitted as well as ducting to the front to maximise airflow into the rad and intercooler as well as the cold air box
Graphic design for 2010 is yet to be decided, but I am thinking white wheels and a red/ white and maybe blue scheme for next year.
A fibre glass sunroof panel will be fitted

    Wheels & tyres
Depending upon if my 16” wheels cover the new front brakes, we will keep them, if not I will sell them on, along with the part worn R888s and instead use the funds to fit track rubber to the 17” Mos. Rubber will prob be 225 45 17” if I go that way, and will be mach sport rally tyres as they are half the price of the Toyos.
For everyday use, I will try and find a set of cheap 16 / 17 rims and paint them satin black or gloss white.

    Interior
New a pillar moulding for some of the gauges
The shift light will be mounted into the rev counter
The redundant Turbo boost gauge will be replaced with an intake temp gauge
Further lightening of the interior, and maybe a rear brace to go along the rear boot, to stiffen up the shell.

That’s all; deadline is Feb, as we have a shakedown test already booked for that month.
If money goes well, the priority will be coilovers.

Very nice, those disks don't seem to have a centre flange for the rim to centre on?
Should take your 16" items no problem
I'm voting for the white rims, white rims are way nicer IMO
    [IMG]

A red/white scheme would look killer - how about something like this in reverse?

Are you deleting the sunroof mech? the lid itself has almost no weight but the motor/frame is 20kgs.
I'd suggest looking at front weight reduction, every extra kg up front is a handling penalty.
Bumper bar and brackets are seriously heavy!
    Found a spare turbo yet?

Breaking in my new 202 brakes I'm having trouble getting heat into the front disks and discovered
that the rears actually do very little work (can't find a proportional valve?) so a bias adjuster should
change things considerably. Many 200 000km cars are still using the original rear pads which is a worry

Cheers dude, the brakes are off the TTE car built for Ove Anderson. so it should stop well enough.

Yeah Steves car ( the red one above ) looks sweet on white rims, dont want to copy the look though, need to be different some how.
Agree on the rear brakes, mine barely get to temp even on track, A little more rear bias will help on certain corner entries too.

The sunroof swap is mostly to stop the envitable rust that will occur one day.

Yeah lots of little bits coming out of the engine bay to help the weight loss.

like the idea of that scheme, something dynamic would be ace.

No doubt about the front brakes, without the locator you risk breaking studs
