    Hi guys, nice site,

Got lots of ideas and inspiration from looking at your great cars!!

    Anyhow thought I would share.

She has a few mods, and is a nice blend of performance and looks, and has a long list of further mods in the pipeline soon for 07!

    Hi

    Cheers for the comments,

They were imported from Japan, then I spent a little while modifing them to fit, no they are combine Indicators and side lights!

They are off a JDM Model Corona.

Only set in the UK!!!! 8) I think it makes the car look so much newer! esp with the Raybrig Headlights. which are so much better than stock. Def get a pair if you have not upgraded already!

Re the rear lights, they are stock uk model rear lights, exactly the same as the GT. I plan to fit JDM rears for a different look however.

The headlight conversion is a simple bolt in upgrade, with new lights and bulbs, they are by raybrig. Cost in £ about £80.00

Not sure on the part nos, will try and find out, I did not import them, a friend did, but his 165 fell victim to Rust, so I was the lucky benifactor!

The other conversion I am doing at mo is fitting a front spliter from a volvo to the car as well. Will post pictures once done!

    Cheers for the comments! :D

    Update on the car.

Sorry been quiet on here for a while, been very busy getting all bits together.

anyhow here is the plan. I have had her RR and this is the power at the fly, with a badly slipping clutch.

So the following Mods are going on.

    St205 gearbox and transfer box.
    uprated Clutch, prob Helix organic
    Fidanzza Fw with arp bolts

    Whiteline F & R flat springs.
    KYB front and rear shox
Whiteline anti lift and castor kit
    Whiteline Rear fixed ARB kit.
Whiteline front and rear Strut braces.
All New bush kit, inc rear diff cushion kit.

    Engine
Basic Rebuild with New OEM pistons and bearings
    Re-con Head
    Steel HG 1.2mm
    ARP bolts head and mains
    HKS EVC Boost Controller
MR2 Rev 3 Ecu conversion with mapping.
Ford Escort Cosworth, charge cooler intercooler upgrade.
This is a really cool upgrade, as it uses a charge cooler in built with the intercooler, so I retain the pump, and charge cooler rad I have, but lose the top resivoir, and plumb it all into the front mount.

With this little lot I hope to crack 300bhp. as you can see I only have 48bhp to go. I want to run 13sec qtrs with full trim.

I will post pictures of the work and a full write up if people think it will be usefull.

The cosworth upgrade is very cheap, I got my intercooler for £70 and they are on ebay for even less!

My aim is to have all this finished by end of May 2007.

    Thoughts/comments suggestions all appreciated.

    Cheers

    Rich

    Engine out today!

Started really well, no hold ups.

By just over 1 hour into it, most stuff was off or loose top side.

Had to find spaces for all the parts, and tools got a little messy.

    But finally

Took engine out from under car, all cross members were good as gold!! and no real hold ups, took us 7 hours in total, which considering I am a bit of a novice with the spanners was pleased at. Mate who has 185 helped big time!

Next stop a whole lotta cleaning and dismantaling, then part rebuild and suspension!

and if yous are lucky I may remember to get the corna part numbers
    :D :D

Sorry no pictures yet, will upload tonight.

    Brief update.

Engine back in, fired up last night, runs really well, only two small issues with error codes 21 and 54, think my 02 sensor on its way out, and also may have loose relay for IC pump.

All front suspension is back on, we had to rebuild one driveshaft, which was not so much fun.

My upgraded IC rad fits really well and seams to be leak free which is a bonus, (we jumped the IC pump to check it)

Still to do, free of drivers side caliper whch has stuck on, :? tighten driveshaft bolts, repair small weep from PAS hose, and then get stuck into rear suspension.

Like Mafix most of worked carried out late into evening, but on my drive, not a lovely workshop, LOL, so rain has held up play at times.

Aim is for car to be all together for a power run, 3rd June, where I hope to run 1.2bar for 300bhp. This along with suspension alignlent, should make sure I am ready for my trip to the Qtr mile strip the following weekend, where I am hoping the New clutch, 205 box and increased power should see me into the low 14s high 13s :D  fingers crossed

    I will post pictures I promise :p

your project made up my mind to change the look of my 165, :D really enjoying reading about the project which has inspired me!

Now to bed the tyres in and get out on the track and road, cannot tell you how different car feels with all new suspension etc.

When old stuff taken off, the front inserts were so soft you could compress them with barely any pressure!!

Next part of the project is new windscreen, then completley re do interior, with new seats, re trim of rears and door cards then flocked dash and all new gauges! 8)

Will keep you all posted, Big thanks to this site, some of the stickies really helped with stuff!! :D

    Alwayzsidewayz ST162 Guru Donated!

Yeah cheers Rye LOL still loving that.

    Quick update on car.

Had to replace front calipers as my drivers side one was sticky. So 2 New recon calipers later, I have passed my MOT and I am road legal.

Next week should see the HKS EVC set up and 1.2bar, which I hope will give me 280+bhp. :D 8)

    Next item is interior. :p

Cheers guys for all comments. makes it all worthwhile.

Hi thought I would update on car.

about a month ago, I had a brake hose clip come loose, which resulted in a loose hose and total loss of brake fluid, pumping the pedal while trying to sort out the fact I was doing 80mph with no brakes damaged the mastercylinder bore. So had to come home on a low loader, got a 2nd hand cylinder and away racing we went. On the journey home from the race, the engine temp gauge went nuts, high then low and all over the place, once home the reason for this was clear. The exhaust manifold gasket had blown badly and "cooked" the sensor! When building the engine up, I had replaced the gasket, but the new one was an inferior quality, and the high revs of the track had blown it to bits. So Last night me and my mate stripped it all down again and replaced it with an OEM gasket set, at the same time I replaced all the sensors in the water elbow, just as a precaution, plus the fan sensor. I also replaced the cap for the mastercylinder as the old one was worm and did not fit well with the 2nd hand cylinder.

everythig is back together, just needs few trim bits back on then we good to go.

Future plans for the comming weeks are as follows.

Fit new temp sender in the throttle body to measure inlets temps, fit cooling pacet fan on front of charge cooler rad. fabricate new heat sheild for underneath charge cooler top box, fit heat sheild to all exposed wiring and heat sheild plug cover to spark plugs. New HKS boost controller needs to be fitted and set up, along with brake stopper.

The rear of the car will see the rear subframe dropped, powder coated and all new bushes from a supra fitted, PM for a part no. the rear shocks will be swapped for adj koni units, and possibly the rear springs swapped for the flat out ones from whiteline. ( if I do this, I will swap the fronts over too).

I have just purchased a 205 rear diff, which is LSD unit, and a direct swap for my one, so I will do this at the same time as the rear frame drop.

I am also going to get a new windshield and custom make the outer insert to stop rust getting in as it does with the oem trim.

Then early next year will see the dash out and flocked and all my new gauges fitted, I am also working with a local company to see if they can make me a 2 piece prop instead of the current 3 piece, which should save weight and the power loss.

Will post pics as and when, did not do it last night as wayyyy to tired after working on car till 11.30 after starting work at 7.00am.

  13. Alwayzsidewayz

    Alwayzsidewayz ST162 Guru Donated!

Yeah the 205 diff is a popular modification over here, as its a straight swap. Having had a LSD on my rear wheed drive cars, I do know it will aid the progressive nature of a slide, but not sure what it will be like on my car?

A lot of the bits really revolve round heat management, as I think this can have a big impact on both performance and component life, engine bay air temps can go off the scale, so looking at all options to help. One option is to get the exhaust manifold + downpipe ceramic coated which will really cut down on temp, but its the cost which is a pain.

Hopefully a few ideas will work and you guys will be able to use them.

    Car projects never stop lol

Hi guys, sorry its been a while, just been so busy.

Right car wise, its been a poor showing by me, not much has bolted onto the car, but there are lots of new bits sitting ready to go!

First off, after much research I have changed my mind and gone FMIC. Why, its down to instant power plus weight saving as We chatted about in another thread ATA vs WTA, for me I need instand cold temps as soon as I leave the line, much like Mafix does when dragging, so while I still believe water is more efficient, the time taken for it to cool following periods of idle on a hot day could result in lost power.

I have got a set up of a rally car, which has had welded 2" pipes all the way, will post pictures, but its going to be great.

I have my new battery relocation kit, but not yet my new battery, I am going for a red top 25, which should be compact enough to hide but cope with the power drain.

I have also got a straight intake set up to go on, plus I am building my new Airbox

6 New gauges to go in, as I want to know everything thats going on

I am also hopping to get the brake stopper finished, and the car graphixed up, this site will be well represented!

Pictures of all bits tomorrow, but I have been busyish with my other car lol

The old rims were 17" 7.5 wide.

    Cheers for the comment. 8)

    Update on Trinity.

The engine Bay now looks like this.

recent work Carried out was the following.

Install Front mount intercooler and hoses.
Instal Mocal coolers for both Power steering and Gearbox cooler.
Power steering done in prep for lots of track work
AeroQuip hoses for Power steering pipes/ gearbox pipes and catch can pipework with push on connectors. Less connections, far better heat resistance and much more reliabilty.
    Install straight intake
Custom make additional heat shield for turbo.
Replace orginal battery with smaller Varley racing battery, re locate behind front crash bar.
[IMG] some may raise eyebrows at this, but I prefer this location to inside the trunk or rear Qtrs, the car is still a road car and carries full trim. I did not want to start cutting the trim about.

Plus these batteries need constant trickle charge as they do not hold amps as well as normal ones.

It weighs 9kgs, which was less than the weight of the junked Chargecooler rad filled with coolant and the pump and pipes.
I had fitted my new Tein pillow ball top mounts, which work a treat although are a little noisy.

I did a RR run last weekend, and ended up with 252bhp at 0.8bar, which indicated to me that I had a boost leak, so I hope to sort this, then up the boost to 1.2bar and figure out how to sort my way rich fueling.

Couple of action pics from the recent sprint event the car did.

    Last minute prep

After the event! how dirty
    [IMG]

    Further plans are:
    Re locate oil filter.
Re build Master cylinder as its leaking.
    Boost increase
Uprate drop links front and rear.
    205 LSD

    Hope you guys approve :)

wow, your car looks awsome! the pic where you are smoking all four tires is my fav. quick question, why didnt you clock the turbo down to clean up the intercooler pipe routing?

also, more pics of how you mounted the front mount please.

  18. Alwayzsidewayz

    Alwayzsidewayz ST162 Guru Donated!

88st165 I didn't clock the turbo as orginally the hard pipe set up I bought was for the turbo un clocked, unfortunatly my set up was different to the car the hard pipe set up was created for so I had to cut to fit, and it just was easy to keep the pipes in the same place. The heat protection does seem to be working well so I have no worries over the pipe into the T/B. but I agree the pipe work would be neater if I clocked it. Will maybe look at that at the end of the year.

I have some build up pictures I will post later today for you.

I can email you the pictures if you want to pm your address, has the pictures are a bit big in full res.

Thank you all for the comments, the car is always a work in progress, but its fun to use it for motorsport as well as for normal driving, it goes round cormers soooo well! lol

Sorry could not acess the forum yesterday, will send out pics today!

Further FMIC pictures, sorry not many of them, not great at taking pictures and working on car at same trime ;)

    Straight intake pipe
    [IMG]

    New top mounts

The garage where it all happens, a bit cramped lol
    [IMG]

Bit more about the Intercooler, it was purchased 2nd hand with the hard pipes off a guy who had a 165 rally car, Its not that wide, but it is quite thick.
We mounted it in the lower grill area for best flow, locating it with 2 locating tabs and two brackets.

I have had to cut some of the under body panels to allow for the pipe work.

I will post power and driving impressions in the intercooler topic.

Some latest pictures from the weekend where it was the second event of the race series I race in.

Action shots to follow in the motorsports topic.

The event went well, but on the way home, my engine fan failed to cut in going up a hill and we hit real high egine temps, which saw the rest of the journey home a real chore.

I hope its not the Metal HG failing, but maybe the Arp studs have lifted, but will investigate this week, regardless, its a pain tob do the head, but not a killer, it can be done.

Still got the plan to get a link G3 plus 560 top feed inj and a new uprated walbro fuel pump and mapped for next race.

with new boost controller and no boost leak, it feels a lot quicker than the 252bhp before, so fingers crossed for close to 300 with the re map.

Also still awaiting the logis for the car :( taking ages to get them done.
