Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

Yeah, it basically retards the ignition as the clutch pedal is depressed, so on each shift you keep the revs up, and the turbo spooling. and of course you get nice sounds as the unburnt fuel is ignited in the exhaust.

Activates on a switch, with a push to break switch on the clutch pedal. and a two stage actuator on first gear.

I can have it so it will build boost in neutral, but doing that will fry the clutch, so it will work on 2nd and above.

Its a stock option off the ECU, select an aux input, tell it which option and thats it! :D

Makes a big difference to flat out acceleration, as it stays right in the power band all the way though the gears.

that's going to kill your turbo and exhaust manifold. it's a sweet setup but it's super hard on those parts. FYI.

yeah, its only for track use , I have that other Supra Turbo to bolt on along with spare manifold.

I think the rally boys with full anti lag would go though turbos after just a few hundred miles

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

Anyone any ideas on the shift light issue?

    Copied from above.

Fit shift light grrr, the most simple addition, yet the most hassle... from the ecu using an aux you can tell the it to use it as a shift light. one wire gives constant 12v, the other becomes earth, when its time for the light to chime in. On testing this, we blew the led lights we were going to use, so swapped to a big ass one off my aftermarket gauges, just tempory ( want to fit LED shift light into rev counter eventually.) Can we get the light to work of the signal?? hell no, yet from a normal 12v source the light works fine... more investigation needed today methinks, but ideas guys?

doing my head in, I hate electrics!!

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

Only way to blow a LED is if there's no 470 ohm resistor on the + wire
Check the new one is still working & resistor value
Check to see if aux is still switching with a gauge continuity to ground,
I guess you can set it wherever you want, it may be switching at 60 000 instead of 6 000?

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

    Track info for tomorrow.
    Track length 1.8miles
weather, sunny, but risk of showers
Surface, mixed, part tarmac, part concrete with gravel top

Car is ready, finally sorted the shift light, cheers Stig, got myself a 12v led, and it works a treat, temp ,mounted on top of dash, but will be fitted into rev counter by next event.

going to try some different plugs NGK BKR7Es, copper not Iridium. will be swapping them tomorrow.

Big news, as long as it passes scrutineering, we made up a bracket to hold a video camera, so you guys should be able to see some in car track action

44 cars in the event, including the Fensport Gen 7 Celica, which should be pretty mental round the track.

Big debate as to the worth of taking my worn Yokos as wet weather tyres as forecast is for showers, decided against it, as they are pretty poor in the wet, plus to get to the track and back is a 400 mile round trip and taking the extra weight of the wheels there and back will be a pain.

all the recent handling work has been done with the R888s, so keeping those.

fingers crossed guys, will try to do you all proud :D

Up tomorrow at 4.00 am, for sign on at the venue at 8.00am.

    Catch you all soon,

    Rich

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

And we had a crap day at the " office"

Freaking Front ARB does not work on loose surfaces...at all...not a hope.

Had sooooooooooooo much understeer it wasn't funny, Never once got an attacking lap :(

Endded up nearly killing front R888s due to them over heating.

Front ARB getting stripped back out, the crazy thing is, it works fine on good tarmac and smooth surfaces, just ace, show it bumps etc they its just shit.

400 mile round trip to finish off the pace and 4th from last in class. :( :( :( :(

Still car ran spot on in very high temps, the new springs worked really well, and the car finished in one piece, unlike two cars who crashed big time, one a ST185, smashed in to the finish boards, wipped out one side of his car, the other the big power, 2.2hks MR2, spun into trees, possibly writing the car off!!! a third car, a ST205 blew his dipstick out due to crankcase pressure and so had to retire.

Very very tired, will post up in car footage when I can, the first out lap is very funny, as I have a huge shock with the crap load of understeer and even in a practice lap, I cannot get it into corners lol.

Oh well, job list is huge for this week, as car has its MOT, so loads to do grrr.

    Catch you later.

A bad day's racing is still better than a good day at work!

Sounds like your handling is still way better than those other two :D

Where the top guys using rally tyres? Maybe invest in some 15in OZ's &
    rally rubber for these tracks?

If it were easy, you wouldn't do it!
    Better luck next time

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

    Cheers Stig

The woodbrisge track is more like a single stage rally track, but the vast majority of drivers stuck with the R888s, and made it work.

LOL re the handling for the other two, it was lucky both drivers were fine, the ST185, lost it after the last corner, a sweeping 90mph+ left / right. If he had spun the other way and hit on the drivers side, I think he would have suffered more. He had a cage, which helped a lot.

My issue was twofold, it threw up the problem of trying to test on the road / if I could have afforded a airfield track day before the event. I am sure I would have identified the problem. However given more time than 8 1.30min runs, I maybe would have learned how to driver round the issue too. I have gone from a very tailhappy car, that allows you to drift the car and left foot brake, to a car that understeers on corner entry, no matter what I did.
Braking and turning was a no no, so I stopped that, but the trouble was that unless you were really slow on corner entry, the car would just plough straight on, I was so slow in some of the low speed corners compared to the rest, I was even beaten by a well driven Aygo!!!!

The flip side was that the rear of the car was so well planted, when I could get the car into a corner I was flying, the first section was very grippy, and on that area, my speed and check times were only marginally off the jonny Milner and Adrian Smith, so I can take lots of positives from it.

brakes worked well, and so did the flat shift and shift light.

Quick q for you, I have cooked for front tyres a bit, I cannot afford to replace them yet at £100 per corner, for the next event, would you swap them to the rear? or keep them at the front?

Will take the ABS fuse out after the MOT, and try to get used to driving without it, as the poor system is costing me time.
We had to brake om the circuit at part of the end of the runway, and it had the white paint on it, the abs hated the fact one wheel was on the paint and just a had a fit,

    Still the car did well.

    Job list
Change oil, did not do it before event, but now it needs it as oil temps were very high!
Fix the windscreen washer system, it gave up on the journey
broke a retaining clip on a brake line on a rear caliper, so that needs replacing
Swap back to std front ARB with std bushes
fix inevitable paint damage from the the track
inspect a slight creaking noise from the steering at one point on lock.
move shift light to a better location
    clean up brake pipes

Car is going back for a re map, and a slight boost increase to 1.1bar

All still to play for, next race is my fav track barkston again, on the 2nd August.

BTW still beat a ST205 and ST185, so its not all bad, plus the other 165 trailed me by 3+ secs.

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

Yeah, put the best tyres on the front where they're needed most
What depth are the treads at?

You gotta think of loose stages as wet tar, ie more toe, earlier braking, smoother transitions,
softer suspension & tyres, less power, more travel etc

Realistically you can't expect to cover every eventuality, but I'm sure you keep a log and will
be better prepared there next time.
No offence intended - next practice session try being less kamikaze on the brakes and use the
torque out the bends, the times may surprise you. Your turn-in is costing you at the moment.

Funny how everyone thinks going fast is only a matter of power and aggression when we know
from experience that the exact opposite is true, esp on stages like this.

I have a set of Toyo T1-S here, looks like a superb rain tyre but discontinued. I don't like the
look of the new Proxes as they prevent the water from escaping out the side?

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

front depth is down to about 3.5mm, so will swap them as rears are at 5mm

Edit, track layout, not my car, but the 1.0 aygo gives you an idea.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zee5gfDs7Jo

Your spot on with the diagnosis, I am being to agressive with the car, no offence taken, Even from a distance I am sure you can help me.
I will post up the in car footage and hopefully you can give me some pointers, the idea behind the camera is to look at where I am going wrong. I know that I am not the most gifted off natural drivers out there, This year I have had one good day, where I was on the pace of better cars, one where I was okay, but struggling due to brakes, and now one where the car and me have been at odds.
The weak link is me in the car, so any tricks ec I can learn to get myself up the board are great.

Your are right, I did not carry the right approach to gravel, I was expecting to carry the same speed as the tarmac sections, and lost tons of speed due to wheel spin etc.

I am going to swap the road tyres to Toyos, when I can justify changing them. I run T1-S on the wifes car, they are awesome, hopefully can get similar for the race car.

Cheers for feedback, shame you are in NZ, other wise would try a get a budget track day and get you to give us one to one car instruction lol!! any cheap flights to the uk???? :D

Re: My 1988 GT4 ST165 Sprint / fast road car lots of updates

That guy is really smooth, good lines etc but not perfect.
(Needs to attack the clipping and exit cones more)
Note he only locks the brakes once (braked too late?) but otherwise
off the brakes in the turns, early and smooth on the power.

You can tell it's quick, there's no sliding or wheelspin and the turn in is
    on the money

I find it really hard to judge those cones at the best of times but it's part
    of racing on airfields

I'd love to go see my folks, friends etc but the way my clients are folding
I may be jobless soon. At least the landlord is understanding (at the moment)
