actually when you compare it to yours it does seem a hell of a lot shorter.. look from your tvis to your port and compare... what do you mean by plenum?? never heard that term before! :D shorters good!! less for the air to travel and get warm! ( i know it would make no difference, just putting it out there! )

plenum is the bulky bit between the TB and the runners. Runner length will to a degree effect torque im led to believe, but cant remember how i think shorter equals less torque? mafix would be the one to ask

would be very interesting to compare the 2 side by side

    Re: seank90, 1990, 2ltr gt st162

hmmm.. i myself think it has more torque because the air has less to travel and gets in faster... i knew when it was going it pulled like nothing else i knew... i didnt have to change down from fifth when overtaken... but i think my tvis is screwed... you know the diafram thats a sealed unit ya?? well when i put a vacum on mine it lets the air out slowly... and the swithches are missing the little air filter at the back of them so in not too sure if its working or not

Unusual casting you got there, apart from that I don't see any major difference.

Longer runners equals more power - look at gen2/3 etc, no tvis but much longer runners.
For max torque you need a variable length inlet as used on race motors.

(4 rotor le mans winner with variable inlets)

Discovered some interesting stuff re TVIS and inlets on my thread this weekend.
Looks like a gen2 manifold can be used on our motors as well without TVIS

There is a thermal gasket available to isolate the manifold from head heat

hmmm. i wonder soo why there different from everybody elses?? there shorter by the looks of it.. i know that when it was running i bet a gen 2 mr2 which i thought was pretty god dam good because them are way lighter! :D and it has really good pick up in lower revs... i think my tvis isnt working right thou... i wonder why are they so different to everybody elses?? could it be one of the last celicas that they did a few touch ups on?

Looks the same to me but with a whole lot more alu on the front of the pipes & some minor casting
    changes

Toyota - dunno, I keep finding stuff like this all the time, maybe cast in the euro factory?

i actually dont know myself... i noticed it lots of cars especially german if you cant get the right year part its going to be different! especially with passat engines! i myself dont understand why its differnt... my old garage's owner had that and i went up to it today to have a look and its different? so i dont think toyota would have made it like that for no reason!! :D i was thinking maybe its flat to save on casting? but thats pretty stupid... i would actually love to know why its different!! :?

Mystery solved, you have the very early 85/6? type gen1 motor as fitted in my TEMS.

If you look at the sump 10-1 it has the two extra bolts and big plug as well!
there are numerous other differences I've documented on my page already

The manifold is definitely longer and sits closer to the strut brace - I thought I had the wrong
engine mountings but now I realise what's different

Looks like they updated it in 86 to save on alu and give more room between the mani & brace

aha!!! now this is my next question... my engine has never been changed in this car because i have complete service history, and i wonder how that got there?? its a 90 one of the last ones , and theres 100,000 miles on the clock so there should be no need for anything to be changed really and the engine was pretty good when i got it? i really dont know.... is there any othere way i could find out??? would the earlier models definetly have an egr system??

No waaay it' s a 90??? - somebody cooked the paperwork somewhere!
You have the 86 grille, wiper, tails, mags etc as well
Bet your heater is the cable type too? Check your mfg date on the firewall

    Re: seank90, 1990, 2ltr gt st162

yup its a 90... thats what it says... i have all the papers i dunno what its all about it was bought in the uk. so maybe that has something to do with it... you see in the uk it has to be registered if a newer model or edition comes out... it cant be registered before the year it entered the country... i checked with the dealership and they have the record... did they make abs in 86?? ya i have the cable type but so does the 88 model up the road... adn i know one more person who has an 89 and he has the cables too?? im actually really confused... there is only one way that it can be 1990 and that is if it was ordered in from a toyota dealer and not registered until 1 jan 1990 which it is as it says on the logbook... where can i check the MFG?

    Re: seank90, 1990, 2ltr gt st162

Show us a pic of your sump & plug & the silver plate on your firewall
Your paperwork is definitely cooked, date of sale is not mfg date - if it were,
my 88 TEMS is a 95 model as it was imported in 95

The comment about the motor being original is also incorrect - your block is from a Gen2 GE.
The Gen1 does not have a knock sensor mount on the back or the oil filter cooler bolt hole on the front
Gen3 does not have it either and has a different sump/filter setup

    Tip
1)st182 was already in production in 89 (Sept)
2)That motor was discontinued in 86 (Rick also has one btw)
    3)Heaters were electric in 87-
    4)Grille was changed in 88
5)Rear wiper was changed (upright) in 89
    etc, etc

I've never seen ABS/cruize control on any JDM 162, but it's in the 1987 Haynes manual,
so I presume may have been available from the start overseas.
EGR was a "bolt-on" in countries where it was mandatory.
I've seen very early 2S and 4S engined cars (85-86) imported from OZ here complete with EGR
Pics/proof are on my page and in the "show your engine" thread

Sounds fishy, maybe they somehow they used the engine # from the 90+ block,
and thats why it's listed as 1990

You say you got the service history - any chance of tracing the previous owner/history etc?

Never existed? - lol, I hope you told them it must be from another galaxy coz
it's living large in your driveway

    Re: seank90, 1990, 2ltr gt st162

I don't think that's the case here, but even if it was Sean has nothing to hide.

We had a case here recently where a guy bought a BMW from a gang member and it
ended up with him arrested and it being confiscated and returned to the original owner.
But that was when he tried to register it on his name.
The onus is on the buyer not to buy anything dodgy, if the deed of sale, ownership etc
is legal then Sean is innocent and the mistake should be rectified before he's up for GTA.

I once had the cops smash up my parent's place looking for a stolen car, it turned out
    there was a mistake
on their computer (somehow my car's plates had been registered to a truck).
Doesn't explain how I was supposed to hide a car INSIDE the house though?
There was no compensation or apology and I wasn't even aware of the problem but could
easily have been jailed for something I knew nothing about.

In this case it may just be a mistake with the chassis #, it does happen and better to fix
it from outside a jail cell?

    Re: seank90, 1990, 2ltr gt st162

well didnt look at the chassis plate yet.. i just used the VIN from the register book and told toyota i want to find out the year of manufacture but i found something wierd with the registery book VIN... it has a G in the middle of st162 so i have ST1G62 so i thought that was properly wrong... ya i have the history and the fella i bought it off bought it off his brother in england and his brother bought it new... the strange thing is his brother isnt a mechanic and the car was completly stock when i got it... im really confused on this one?? but what i do know is he has a spare grill... now this made me think.... because the fella i bought it off said that his brother has a spare grill for the car... and if i wanted i could get it cheap but i had no money at the time so couldnt... maybe its an 88-89 grill?? if it cane with the original alloys we'd know for defo!! :D im going to go and have a look and the chassis plate and match it up to the book and see the difference today! crazy
