so today i tackles my steering rack and column, i was so sickened of the steering feeling shyte so i said i may as well dd it now since i have the parts available!

Let me just say that this was the worst job i have done on the car by myself, would have been ieasy if there was two people but there wasnt, but i cant complain, stig fitted the gearbox by himself on the ground! :hehe

i first started off by removing the steering rack from my black celica
    [IMG]

you must remove the two tie rod ends first.

you then need to remove the two brackets that are holding on the steering rack to the chassis
    [IMG]

once this is done remove the two pipes going into the steering rack, the bolt on the one on my car was rounded so i had to cut it off and replace the pipe... i feel bad for somebody who didnt have a spare car.

St162 rack vs st202 rack..... hmmmmm and yes, there was sunshine in ireland.

swapping parts off the column over from one to the other, is anybody wants any parts off the column let me knwo.... no charge, just shipping otherwise its going to the dump.

    the culprit No.1
    [IMG]

the rack also had about 5mm of play left and right... not good. culprit no.2
    [IMG]

i removed the two tie rods so it wouldn affect alignment too much when i put them on the new rack.

new tie rods installed on new rack.

when i went to install the fixed column i had spotted that the steering when was broken in two places which ment it had play also in it and was rattling, so i welded that up.

also the centre bolt was loose... culprit no.4
    [IMG]

    good as new!

installing the new column wasnt too bad. i found an easy way of opening the 12mm nut hlding the knucke to the rack. all you need is a really long extenstion!

and that was me done for the day! and boy did i feel the difference, once i get it aligned properly again it should be good! i really cant wait now! :D

Re: seank90, New steering rack!!! At last roadholding!

Still waiting to see those chassis plates?

I've done it as well, without any hoists, pull one wheel off and slide it all the way out.
My donor rack came from an ABS Levin so it looks like there's a heap of options.
Did yours also have electrical ABS plugs on it?

How did you get the steering arms out of the rack?

    :iagree

    Sir stiggles,

the way i got the arms out is by using a 30mm open end spannet hammer and a chisel, if you look at the washer it acts as a lock nut, you need to bend back the tabs were you can grab it with a spanner, once thats done put the spanner on the tie rod (the bit on the left, not the tie rod end) and give it a smack with the hammer, it will loosen up then and come out rreal easy!

ill get the pictures of the plates today for you! :D

Need to see better pics on that, can't see how that washer holds the rods fast.
Seen a lot of those rods loose or bent here but I'm a real chicken when it comes to steering racks
    and staying alive.

Are there instructions in the BGB? I've got a few I wanna strip for spares

ya, im getting proper sick of it, i feel like i drive a pile of shite! which cost me more than a new audi... if i want to go anywere i have to bring a bottle of power steering fluid, and it leaks out on top of the exhaust so when i stop a plume of smokes comes out fromunder the car and makes it look even worse, not to mention the wheel bearing that sounds like a tumble dryer with a shoe in it...

Re: seank90, New steering rack!!! At last roadholding!

sean ive been looking at mr2oc. ive actually been wrong. the gearing on the p.s. rack is actually "quicker" than a manual rack. if you want to convert to manual steer youd have a "quick" rack by converting yours. if i have any p.s. leaks or issues on the new car thats the route im going. it would be amazing just to have that whole system gone. (plus 20lbs gone)
-note. the "just connect the hoses in a loop" and "just cap the lines" conversions are not the correct way. but if your going to rebuild your rack you could do it properly....just an idea.

-also on hubs. 09s cv nuts are basically hand tight, any tighter (torqued to spec) and they howl like a mother.......?
