well today was a major dissapointment in terms of what got done. mainly due to distraction after distraction. numerous visitors and dad getting side tracked.

some of the things i did accomplish today.

    - Water pump in
    - Swapped the starter motor
    - Thermostat in (wait til you see the old one its so rooted lol)
    - crank pully off (what a prick that was, did not wanna budge even with the crank puller)
    - Fuel filter swapped, that fucker was nie impossible the bottom connection was so tight even with a brake line single hex spanner i struggled big time to crack it
    - heads on
    - fuel rail and injectors on
    - Intake manifold on
    - bottom timing cover off ready for timing kit
    - replaced corroded hoses

Tomorow dads busy until about mid day but il still head in early and do as much as i can before the timing kit goes on. pics tomorow :)

Re: Rev heads work in progress * did someone say GTE?*

today plain and simple was a shit day

woke up later then planned with a mass head ache. got in the car. was pooring with rain.
stopped at a servo for some monster to try and wake me up. back out to the car, turn the key. tick tick tick tick. for fuck sake. so in the pissing rain try and role start no luck. give the starter a wack. no luck. Volts were a lil low showing about 10 or so on the dial.No jumper leads in the car and the no one that came through had any and some didnt even know what jumper leads were haha. To far away to call anyone so waited for RACV to come give me a jump.
the RACV guy was an arrogant shit tried to treat me as if i didnt know anything but cbf going into that. anywayz quick jump still in the pouring rain and i was on my way to the factory.

    things i did

    - attached throttle body
    - all vacuum lines connected ( bit of a head fuck coz my egr is disconected along of them have been re-routed)
-all cooling lines and plumbing connected
    - wiring loom semi connected i.e injectors, cold start, TVIS switch etc
    - made a gasket up for the cooler hardlines into the water pump housing
    - retapped the the threads for the exh. manifold studs ( a couple of studs came out rather then the nuts coming off)

dad managed to snap the BVSV (the black one, the one actually required) so i then had to sort through a whole heap of shit to find my spare water outlet/junction. found it then fought like fuck to get the BVSV off and swap them over. it was worth swapping the whole unit over as other bits were missing from the spare.

Im not very happy atm especially with dad. He told me that he would be there by about lunch time. so i was hoping we could get the cams in and set the timing. so that i could finish it all off tomorow morning. He didnt get there til about 7pm and was absolutely exhausted and sore with no will to work he also then tells me he doesnt wanna set the timing and would rather my mechanic do it. Theres a slight chance my mechanic might be able to do it tomorow night im praying so. If not i may try and organise for a mate to help me out who knows what they are doing as i simply dont trust myself to do it on my own.

    anywho time for pics

Re: Rev heads work in progress * Heads back on almost there*

    ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the last couple of days have had me angry, sad, throwing tools, punching walls and jumping for joy all in 1.
Yesterday had the car all re assembled ready to strart was trying but nothing happening. It had spark so ok fuel whats the go. I had left the ingintion on and cylced it on and off fro about 20minutes to get the pump flowing fuel prior to this. Checked the feul filter bone dry. checked for any leaks, nothing. Ok fuel pump not working why?
after making sure it wasnt a dicky fuel filter and cehcink plugs and efi relay and fuse all was sweet. Finally checked the obvious thing. no power going to fuel pump. Today dad and i fucked around with all sorts of wiring diagrams checking all the contenuities and polarities on the EFI relay, diagnosing box and the main open switch relay (i think thats what its called next to the ECU) all was sweet. So i knew ok iv fucked something under the dash. checked couldnt find anything unplugged. Though ok il be a clever dick and look for the same type of wire as the pump positive. 1st plug i found with that wire was connected but thought id give it a squeeze. CLICK! hmmmmm turn the key and VROOM shes running, well fuck me lol
ok so let it run for half an hour with some el cheapo oil with some kero mixed in (help clean and displace any residual water) and just water with some radiator flush.
Turned her off dropped the oil and water. after it all drained went to do up the sump plug and notice water dripping from behind the block. ok no sweat knew something would leak. It was the thin house at the back that connects to the water hard line direct from the waterpump. Easy to find, almost impossible to get to. So after fiddling cracked it and removed everything, dizzy, intake, fuel rail return line etc, got her done up put everything back on, or so i thought.
Swapped the oil filter, topped her up with good oil and more rad flush (it was horrible) turned the key would try but no fire, o shit i can smell fuel. Got a mate from one of the factorys further down from me. i stupidly left the fuel rail return line disconnected haha. so attach that and turn the key, try but no fire. WTF is it this time!
fuel was all sorted so checked and plug one wasnt sparking hmmmmm, cable to the dizzy cap, no spark. Checked volts on the coil out put and input were fine WTF! finally Ryan (my mate) had the thought maybe it requires the spark to be sent back and forth from the dizzy and coil not a solid continuous spark from the coil. I know sweet fa bout ingintion systems so took his word for it. lead to dizzy were fine. took off the cap, rotor button was fine. after scratching our head for shits and giggles i removed the dizzy. THE DIZZY SNAPPED! the thick outer shaft with the Oring that makes contact with the head had snapped clear away how i dont know but it did. well fuck me lol. so once again off to the parts car (wurth its weight in gold) swapped the dizzy, Bobs your mums brother and shes running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im sure there is multiple dramas iv had that i havent informed you of but as much as a screw around this has been and even though at times i was reduced to threateing to strip her down and start all over again. This has been a very good experience for me. Iv learnt ALOT even ythough alot of it i didnt want to know haha.

I havnt driven her yet still gotta put the dash back together and tail lights back in (from stripping the back) also run the car for about another hour and drop the rad flush and top her up with coolant and then shes back.
I can already tell shes revving alot free'er and with more induction noise then she used to. pritty sure ive fixed my zaust leak and its sounding a lil deeper.
will get a vid once shes all cleened up poor things disgusting. O and my shiny newly painted axtractors are now matte black the clear coat lasted all of 5 seconds before it filled th factory with toxic smoke lol actually doesnt look bad :p

Good work Rev, nice to see you following the correct proceedures

Now you need to torque the head again, tighten the rocker covers, re-check the belts, check for leaks etc.

I suspect the dizzy wasn't aligned properly and it cracked when you tightened it.
We all learn the hard way
Fuk me dude, ever seen what happens when fuel gets on an exhaust? ugh

Re: Rev heads work in progress * ITS ALIVE!!!!!!*

    YAY shes home
drove her for the 1st time tonight and brough her home. shes revving ALOT free'er throttle is feeling very light but that may be due to driving a different car for so long
a few stupid little things need my attention quite immediately.
the seats i swapped in including belt buckles are post, my seatbelts are pre. They dont fit so no seatbelt is something i must fix asap.
stereo iv obviously disrupted some wiring so the speakers just put out a loud feedback noise
speedo cable dead AGAIN! iv done it that many times itl take 10 minutes to fix lol
When we swapped the dash, the way the central locking was wired up we had to disconnect and reconnect it. we did this all with the window down and until tonight on the drive home that window has stayed down. Tried to wind it up and got to apoint where it was tight (bout half way). and now central no worky obviously i routed the wires badly and catching on the glass.

all easy fixes and usually they would drive me nuts but im just so happy to have her back i dont care. temps fine, no banging, no noticeable leaking, and revving happier then a fat kid with cake :)

finally finished reading this whole thread lol very inspiring im surprised you can do all this yourself and your only 18 or was it 19? lol. so interesting its like a movie storyline haha.

btw what wreckers do u go to? ive been to imlachs and harveys both got about 5-10 st162's. and about the interior colours a few pages back i got a blue interior and just with black throwovers and black floormats it takes away the "taste" of the 80s interior colour design and blends it out i reckon :p

also with your stereo i got a similar setup but with type S 4" speakers all round (was too scared to have to install big type R speakers on the parcel shelf, lets just say my area isnt the best place to showoff what you have), installed into the original speaker holders, actually really surprised how loud they are and then a type R 12" sub. absolutely goes off haha. can always trust alpine to deliver quality!

but look at this dodgy job jb hi-fi did on the installation!!!

    thanks mate
iv just turned 19. Iv been around cars my whole life. when my parents were still together my mum even competed in motrosport and did very well. Its in the blood. Im very fortunate in that i have always had great resources such as this site, my dad, friends like jimmy and a place to work on her o and of coarse the passion. If it wasnt for those factors shed probably be at a junker by now.

I go to Imlachs quite a bit. Also Kilsyth Pick A Part and if desperate ringwood Pick Pay n Go ( Steep prices with a shit yard). Yer abouts are you from? I live in wantirna and my factory is in Moorabin.

Re the speaker install so long as it works they dont care, im not surprised. Where the shit are the nuts for your strut tops tho!

I live in frankston and the photos were taken when i was changing the springs. Took me and a friend 5 hours. Lol

haha my mum HATES that i spend so much time and money on cars i get the "your so much like your father" speech. My dad however is the opposite. Hes encouraging me to go check out a 3rd laser even though i dont want a 3rd one and keeps reminding me to keep an eye out for a mustang lol
To dad i always reply "do you wanna pay?" and to mum "at least it keeps me to broke for booze and stops me racing on the street" no mother can argue with that haha

    had some fun today.
had smoked a few lil ricers off at the lights. why? beacuse there exhasust sounded like an angry bee trying to shit in a bottle haha
al the car surprised me today it feels like its freed up a lil more. Doing a right turn near my house i took of with just a blip of wheel spin wich was expected how ever wheel spinning in second at the apex of the corner wasnt. quick nip of the handbrake and all was fine lol. Iv taken that corner millions of times and with a heavier foot then that and its never started spinning in 2nd there. It made me smile :)
