Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress Here I fitted an FE box, starter and plate It's OK but something big could get jammed inside and wreck your clutch That pipe looks wrong - was there fluid or vaccum inside? Pity you're in USA, I got a bunch of spare mounts Exhaust removal The "trick" is - Spray the nuts with penetrating oil a few hours earlier Use impact sockets (much kinder on the nuts) Fit the impact socket with an old extension With the socket/extension fitted, tap each nut with a hammer (cracks the threads loose) Fit your ratchet and jerk the nuts loose or hit the ratchet handle with your hand. (jolts them loose) Do not pull on the rarchet to loosen the nuts, that just causes the studs to loosen in the head. Use a rattle gun if available, it has the same effect as hitting the ratchet handle. If studs come loose, locktite them and put them back using two locked nuts Oil all the nuts before re-assembly Actually Toyota tried to remedy the exhaust stud problem on early turbo motors with a special stud It has a square head and is made from H/T steel, P/N ? Another version has a torqz head and is even better Anyone know where to get them?
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress Here's the pic of the mystery hose source. Its the one on the left, coming from the Y splitter on the intake manifold.
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress I'm really not sure. It ran fine and passed all its tests though, so :mystery
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress -stig, its part of the 89 change w/ the green injectors. cant remember where it goes though. -should show on the hood vacume diagram.
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress The hood is from a FE of an unknown year, so its not much help.
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress I looked at 3S-GE m/t diagrams and it doesn't show there either?
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress I dunno stig, very confusing. In other news, I got a motor mount in good condition from the Pick-n-Pull today (10 dollars woo) and tried to put it in. When I took the old one out I supported the engine with some wood and a spare jack. Somehow it seems as if the motor has tweaked itself and moved towards the back of the car, making it impossible to fit the motor mount in. Would it harm anything if I tied a ratchet strap to the motor pulling hook and gave it a tug to make the motor sit squarely? I tried every other solution, and this seems like the only thing that will allow the studs to fit in the bracket on the engine. Also it was 107 degrees today, almost a record!
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress Everything is put together now, but it wont start :banghead. Along with that a bunch of other shit broke. The wiring harness is in terrible shape all over the place, so I wouldnt be surprised if a badly fixed wire got pulled out of place while it got moved around. Starter does nothing when I try and start it, just sits. Bench tested it and spun like crazy. Coolant temperature sensor shattered and the wire broke off, but not as important. O2 sensor wiring crumbled So it continues to sit in my driveway, waiting.
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress It goes back to the rubber tube between the AFM & the throttle body.
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress that is crazy! i thought the air outlets for the intake piping came after our generation. so, if he gets an aftermarket intake from ebay then it wouldnt work....................
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress Wooooooah, my rubber tube doesnt have the place for the hose to go on. That explains why its plugged then. Thanks man!
Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: No start! No spark? Got everything hooked up and ready to go, starter cranked and nothing happened! I could hear the compression and everything, but no dice. Started at the spark by taking the wire that goes into it and holding it near the body. No spark. So should I keep going back and finding what doesnt work, or did I skip something on accident?
Looks like the guy lied about a bit more than I thought. Replaced the head gasket, started it up and it ran fine for about ten seconds. Then I was greeted with more lovely white smoke and a wonderful knocking coming from the bottom end. Went over the entire thing with a fine toothed comb and redid the timing twice just to make sure. Its definitely not good. I'm starting to look for replacement long blocks now, because I dont want to risk something going wrong with the head or anything else like that. I miss the days when people were honest and trustworthy.
you are wright it's hard to find honest people in our day's at least on this site there are lots or some lol
even when I got my new wheels the ad said 5x100 bolt patten when I got them home an tried to put them on they weren't 5x100 but 5x120... bloody all...
So it turns out there are nice people. A mechanic saw my listing and came by to check it out while I was in class last night. He checked it out and tweaked some things, and he told me that its not the rings for sure. Apparently there's a vacuum leak somewhere and the check engine light came on intermittently. So I guess I'll be taking it by a shop and have them check it out, and if its a reasonable cost I'll have my car back!
Soon I hope! Had to wait for some extra money to come around after buying some new appliances, but now its here so it shouldnt be too long :mrgreen
