This is my new celica to replace the dying ST that I had before. Please excuse the poor pictures, all I have is my cell phone.

5 speed, two tone, and one of the best car I've ever driven. Theres a few dents here and there, and a mismatched panel, but its no big. The previous owner had a mechanics shop and this was a project car for a few of the employees. Rebuilt bottom end with stronger rods and such, it was turboed for awhile with the factory stuff, but is now back to normal. It runs like a beast, accelerates and revs like nobody's business. And it has come other cool stuff

100k less miles than my old one!

Though not everything is the best.

Silly battery, what are you doing in the trunk. I'll need to get a box for that, recommendations would be great if anyone has any.

Best 1500 dollars I've ever spent.

Now I'm going to ask a few questions:

The climate control things get power, but nothing happens when the buttons are pushed. The guy said there is a relay type thing behind the glove box that needs to be replaced. Is this correct?

I seem to have to shift a lot sooner with this car than the ST. Is that just how the transmissions are geared? I also don't know if the gauges are reading correctly. Currently its 3500 rpm in third at 40mph.

Thanks for any help with the questions and I hope you enjoy the car.

heck yeah man. Welcome to the club! haha Nicee car, it's a beaut. Must be a GE huh. My 88 GT only goes up to 120 MPH, though I'm running an FE.

On the other, you're in Fresno. That adds another person we know in California. We have thai fighter, cliff, myself, that are close, then theirs Kevinyang and PhantomJDM in the bay area, might as well invite the peeps in oregon etc. Now we really gotta have a meet.

    i love two tone!

-get a marine battery box from carquest or napa. cheap. put a spare tire back in and bount the box to the p.s. in the trunk to offset driver weight. it makes a suprising amount of difference to get it out of the bay.
-rpm is gauge is done by the ecu elecrtronically through the ignition, so that should be correct. however like mine the spedo could be off (still working on that one)
-right hand side under the glove box. youll see a small grey square on the outside of the fan part of the core. 1 screw holding it in. pull it out theres 3 springs, look for breaks in the spings. this controls the fan/fan speed. look in the heater fix section for pics...this only controls the fan/fan speed, so if the other stuff doesnt work youll have to look deeper.

    -cool car

It didnt come with a spare tire sadly, so I cant do anything about that. I will mount it on the passenger side though.

Thanks for the tip about the marine box, I'll check that out today.

    Double post! woooo
I replaced the fan relay, and it still doesnt work, but it clicks once when I hit the fan button.
So I guess the motor's bad? Its obviously getting power and all that, but just not moving. I'll take it out later and see whats up. If anyone has any tips for the motor I would love it.

The sunroof is also extremely screwed on the inside, which sucks. Maybe I'll ask Mafix how he did his glass one? That would be really cool to have :D

In good news I got a few new brackets and trim pieces that were broken, which was nice.

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

Something is very very wrong. Over the weekend I changed the oil and put in the better quality radiator that I had, started it up and everything ran fine.
But when I started it today white smoke just POURED out of the exhaust. It looked like a smokescreen from a secret agent movie. The only thing I could think of is I put too much oil in, but when I checked the level it was right at the full level. The coolant is also at the same normal level it was yesterday.
I have no idea what else it could be.

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

Blue smoke = Oil burning in combustion chamber/exhaust
Black smoke = Raw fuel burning (engine is running rich)
White smoke = coolant burning in combustion chamber/exhaust

Even though your resovir showed the same amount, safe to bet your radiator is low and/or dry. You cant judge how much coolant is in your system based solely off the resovior. The radiator cap opens under pressure. Since you just started the engine, safe to say it wasn't at NOT and the coolant wasn't hot enough to cause the radiator cap to operate as normal and allow coolant to escape to/from the resovoir.

Safe to say if you pull out all your spark plugs you'll find one (or more) are sparkling clean from the coolant burn.

Since the previous owner turboed it with 'factory equipment' chances are your headgasket took a shit on you.

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

I was told the head gasket was replaced when they did the engine work, but I wouldnt be surprised if he was lying. I checked the radiator directly and it was still at the same level, not the reservoir. On further inspection it only dumps white smoke when you hit the gas, on idle it just sits (though it idles a little high). The smoke is also a dark white-ish/grey. I'll pull the spark plugs and see whats up.

Yes, I'm guessing HG. They probably tried to fix, but messed it up. (This is unrelated) do you know when the timing belt was done? Just saying might as well get that done also if you can.

Sweet gt-s either way, much nicer than mine

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

I have no idea when the timing belt was done, but if I'm going to be doing the head gasket I'll definitely replace that and all the other belts.
If I'm still stumped by tomorrow I'll take it in and see what they say.

    Thanks for the compliments :D

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

-i must have not posted my comment.

-could be a bad IAC leaking coolant into the intake. rev the motor a few times, shut it off, then pull the elbow from the intake. look for coolant before the butterfly. try a coulpe times. mine did this, but i didnt notice the exhaust.

-i would think that if it were this or a h.g. you would see a drop in coolant. not sure how long it takes for the plugs to show signs.

-never had an egr, but i would imagine this could cause similar issues..???

-edit:forgot about the turbo thing...most likley a h.g. with some additive as a temporary fix to sell it. but one can hope. if this is the case hopefully nothing is cracked or warped.

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

The oil on the dipstick will look funky if you have a blown HG.
If it looks OK, Jon might have diagnosed your problem correctly

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

So I pulled the elbow after letting it run and revving it for a bit, and was greeted by this
    [IMG]

There was a bunch in the elbow going to the filter too, and a little in the afm

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't supposed to be THAT much oil in there right? I know that some goes in there from the breather tube thing, but I've never seen that much.
