Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): Dead. There's 2 types Dave, our JDM's don't have a governor either and use the speed sensor instead
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): Dead. Oh I forgot to mention, there's two different types correct. A140E and A140L. E is with ECT and is controlled electronically while the L uses some oil feed mechanism. The camry's might have been E. Where you have the speed sensor I have the governor inside of that...
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): Dead. so basically on the trans: i'm gambling $230 of shop cost+parts towards the transmission working again. They have a supply of that governor gear, it seems to have been a "usual" thing with A140L equipped celica's back 10 years ago to need this replaced, hence why they still carry the part. With these 4th gen's slowly disappearing, it's been 3 years since he's had a Celica needing this repair. :fingersx hnoes towards getting this celi away from yard art status. in the meantime: since i broke my new 2month old front motor mount by not getting the messed up rear mount done at the same time, i decided to work on the original front mount. + polyurethane: it's got some flex in it, but it's way stronger and more solid than the new front mount i purchased two months ago that is now in two pieces.
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): Dead. sweet....so its just your tranny thats dead?......cuz theirs a motor and manual tranny for sale locally here thats already pulled.
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): Dead. it's just the tranny that's dead. cylinder head will need to have work done on it some time. but that's just basically replacing it unless i want to replace piston rings/bearings as well at the same time...
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! just got the car back from the shop. again, i didn't care about the cost, i just needed my celi back on the road asap. my governor gear was completely gone. it was just metal rod, no gear left. new gear in place, everything shifts like new, lockup is perfectly where it should be, gears don't slip. $37 part, 2 hours labour + tax = $290. Better than a new trans I guess. will post pics of leftover gear. also installed new polyurethane front AT mount. will post pics later as well!
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! Very, very cool... 300 bux seems a small price to pay to get your baby back... believe me. I've spent thousands to get them back on the road... once behind the wheel though, I forgot all about the money... :hehe
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! @rickgts the governor should've been a diy job. basically it's the same thing as changing a driver's side drive axle. then just beside of where the axle goes into the trans, there's two 10mm bolts which hide the governor. i didn't have tools to do it myself, i stopped at the drive axle 31??mm nut. lol... @rick, i did forget about the $300...until the low fuel bulb came on less than a block away from the shop. :aargh @nate thanks! pics from exhaust - rear mount - trans governor gear - homemade poly front mount: so tempted to leave it like that... my trusted mechanic. $65 per hour and quality work for my parents van and the celi left: 2 month old $70 mount, right 24 year old $5 poly mount. it's a LOT smoother now, although the car is a giant vibrator only in reverse. WTFgovernor?!
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! Just curious, how much did they charge for that flex section? Sometimes it's worth it to just pay someone to do it; especially if you need a hoist to do the job.
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! Exactly why I predicted ALL the early type A140 boxes failing in the near future - the plastic has gone brittle and shattered You need to pull the driveshaft to do this swap but you don't need to remove the driveshaft from the hub. Undo the 2 shock bolts and the brake pipe and you have enough room to pull the the CV, you need to drain the oil but not the diff I recommend changing the box (ATF) AND diff oil (80-90W) - clean the strainer & pan and look for plastic/metal filings Yes, I did run my gen2 headers like that - took around 10mins for the cops to arrive
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! Understand that feeling of wanting your Celi back on the road ASAP. Soon as you get yourself in that drivers seat, its like a welcome relief ! :cool
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! $100 all done. they'll even do it with no tax ;P (35 part, 1hr labour) stig, this may apply to a140L boxes only as the a140E's don't have a governor! damn i didn't know you could take out the cv without taking it out from the hub...damn it would've just been the 6 bolts on the tranny side + 2 shock bolts... did your exhaust sound awesome for those 10 minutes though? ahaha
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! Glad to hear you got things fixed without much damage to your pockets :cheers
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! thanks dave! gave my celi a treatment today. proper tires! (used) 205/45/16 kumho ecsta's all around. $110 installed! a heck of a difference in traction/turning/braking, everything, even though they are only 50% depth left. previous was: 195/50/16 dunlop sport 2x 205/50/16 sumo firenza? anyone heard of these? 205/50/16 michelin. CV grease is spitting all over the right wheel though...gotta check that out
Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT): back! dropped by rick's on the way to something else, here's some pics! AND THE MONEY SHOT
