Nice explantion Stig, always concise, and easy to grasp, I knew I was learning 'something' here, I think I got one out of 6 or so right :banghead :hehe

What vert are you talking about Rick ?

you may also get confused with all the coolant/temp gauge/temp sensor shit. there's like 4 different sensors and senders.

thermostat sensor (enables/disables fan) - white dedicated plug (1 pin) at thermostat housing
temp gauge sender - thinnest item on the coolant elbow; one spade connector
coolant temp sensor (sends info to ECU) - dedicated green plug (2 pin) on coolant elbow
??? (still don't know this one) - dedicated red plug (1 pin) on coolant elbow <- not all cars have this.

Not all cars have all the sensors, ie my car lacks the BVSV

Spidey - don't mention "the Red Lady", thats a sore point round here. Rick's beautiful red vert was wrecked in a garage fire

To be honest I always thought the vert and coupe had the same lid

@ eNtraxGT88 - your right, it is easy to get confused, I now understand what they are and what they do, sweeeet. I just had a look at my coolant elbow and the BGB and I don't see a 1pin red plug either.

@ Stig - Mine has 2 BVSV's and for those who don't know. (I had to google it) BVSV = Bi-metal Vacuum Switching Valve. They have several purposes and one (at a pre-determined temperature) sends gas fumes from the charcoal canister to the air intake chamber to be burned.

Once again, one is for the charcoal canister system and one is for the EGR system. My car has a diagram under the bonnet for Vacuum Hose Information with the BVSV's. Damn these car have some shit on them :aargh

:shock As soon as you said 'Red lady' it dawned on me, I have seen her with Rick at a car meet, I think I originally commented when I saw her in a group hug of 3 (me thinks). This is the first I have heard that she was destroyed, very sad to hear Rick.

talked with stig, seems that the 1 pin red plug were on both stig and I's FE/auto cars. gearbox temp sensor maybe?

either way, if your water temp gauge is not moving at all, this is what you need to replace in the coolant elbow. either this or the gauge itself inside the cluster

Gotcha Trax, well there you go folks, yota got rid of it on the 3SGE auto.

Anyone know exactly what it's for and why they ditched it on the 3SGE auto :munch

If you remember, Stig, When I was doing the repair, I was trying to find out myself. It shows in the interchange software and manuals that they are different. I was hoping to find a coupe one free or really cheap to figure out why, but never did. I found that the upper corners by the rear of the top could be a different angle, but could never verify.

Yup, Spidey... Coming up on the 2 year anniversary of Her demise... Don't think I'll ever really get over it. I owned her for 10 years...

Hey Rick, after registering here in 2009 I returned here only 6 months ago.

Stig mentioned so I will assume you were discussing it here 2 years ago, where are the posts/thread ?

Lost in the big site meltdown a year or so ago... Along with about 1400 posts and a 15+ page thread on both cars.... Ah, well....
BTW, the corner lites in Square were the only salvageable parts left of the lady, so I fixed the melted pieces in the housings and used them in him.

Still my favorite shot of both cars...lol

JDM's don't have BVSV's, I do have some from an Aussie car though

The gearbox temp sensor - it keeps the gearbox from going into high gear till the motors warm
(Or so I remember reading years ago)?

oh my god no wonder. i thought it was something wrong with my old car, but you're right. overdrive would only engage when the car has ran for maybe a few minutes.

Onya Stig. what Aussie cars had BVSV ?

Hey Rick, That's a serious site meltdown and gotcha on the posts, hence the note in your signature.

Ask Mafix or CyberRad to add those 1400 to your post count and delete it from your sig, one of them did it for my Join date......... vBulletin is excellent software and allows this to happen.

Willie loves it, in the beginning he put 3 Billion posts :lol, now check his join date, We were hanging heaps of shit on him at the time :lol

Nice joining of the 2 pics, if I look at the 2 cars without noticing the background it almost looks like their in the same parking lot and I can see why it's your fave pic

BTW guys, I notice Mafix has been MIA these days...... Any clues, is he alright ?

I wish all cars came with a sensor that wouldn't release the ebrake till the motor was warm.
My Alfa's had a big red light on the dash for this, I see youngsters climb into cars after work and wheelspin down the road.
Ther'e always wondering why their car keeps running bearings

All - as far as I know. There are a few we stripped on my thread, ST163R was the one I remember with a 4S motor

The crash of 2010 was a minor disaster - I lost 11 000 hits, dunno how many thousand posts (who cares?), Mafix lost 25 000 hits -
but the worst hit was the database, there are still threads with huge holes in them.
I was on ST162.com, so I don't think my join date is correct either?

Mafix isn't MIA, he prefers to let others help out and jumps in when needed, even I don't have time to scan all the posts but try where I can

:lol Just the other day I was chinwagging to a dude all things cars and I commented on how I only drive mine when the engine is at a decent operating temperature, he then tells me he will crank he's in the morning and 'fly' to work and it takes him a whole 3 minutes :lol. I won't move mine under 5.
I was going to go into a spiel about bearings and top end etc and thought otherwise, some people just don't get it, or care.

I don't give a toss about post count either but some do and as said, I thought it would help Rick with his mention of such in his siggy so he could remove it is all.

    St163 4S-FI, now there's a number you don't hear everyday and it's 1.8 liter, no.

I remember at the start of this new site Willie asked if someone would help 'join the dots' in said database, did someone take up that task ? (and what a task it would be)

Yeah I know the lad is never too far away, just not as 'busy' as his normal good self in the last week or two and I noticed it that's all, no biggie, maybe he had a holiday or has decided to 'back off' a tad who knows and it is ones prerogative of course

Hey Rick, I forgot to mention your sentimental effort on the indicator lights :)

All 4S is 1800cc, ours had carbs but this one was injected so I knew immediately it wasn't JDM

Willie knows I'm here to help, when I had permissions on the old site I did a lot of "cleaning" which is thankless as people only whinge when things aren't right

  17. What is supposed to plug into the spade connector on the temp gauge sender on the coolant elbow? Nothing is plugged into mine and the spade connector is still connected, meaning it hasn't broken or snapped off.

I want to wash my engine bay. It is ridiculously dirty. Besides the battery terminals, spark plug area, and alternator, what else should I cover with plastic while washing it down?

Next time I post a pic of the engine, it will be sparkling. Also want to do something about the whole air intake assembly...not sure if this will be enough? K&N filter + MAF adapter http://www.ebay.com/itm/37054690599...96&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&vxp=mtr

By the end of this coming weekend, all fluids will be changed, and the valve cover gasket. Then I'll paint the header heatshield, strut bar, and wiper arms black.

Oh, and could the water temp gauge not be functioning because of the coolant temp SENSOR? Should I just buy the sensor AND the switch?

What has everyone else done for their intakes?

One last question...will any newer 3S-GE fit in my bay without any problems? I'd like to drop in a new engine since I'm going to need a new clutch very very soon. I found a good deal on a 94-97 complete engine with transmission, low miles, for $900. I'd love to get it.

I would highly recommend getting a BGB(Big Green Book) aka a Toyota Shop manual for your year. Haynes and Chiltons arent worth the paper they are printed on. You can pickup one on ebay anywhere from 20-50 bucks. I have to look, I think I might have an extra one that Id be willing to part with. I got to look on what year it is. I have all 4 years and somehow I managed to buy two of the same year.

  19. Thanks! I feel like an idiot now. I purchased a Haynes manual last night for about $20...hope it helps. Might end up buying this shop manual unless you can hook me up :D http://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-Toyota...anuals_Literature&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a6edbef04

this is the reason why your temp gauge isn't working. find the wire somewhere down there, it's the signal for the gauge!

this sensor doesn't affect the gauge, it's either for the ECU/transmission/cold start injector

k&n panel filter, part number 33-2030, fits directly in the air box and it retains the throttle response that disappears when you get cone filters

any FWD 3S-GE will drop in (the only RWD is from the altezza), doing the wiring is a different story!

for the speedo cable, there's two portions to the cable, the upper part goes through the firewall into the cluster, the lower into the transmission. you should be able to separate the cables somewhere just under the air filter hose
