3S-GE...anything to look out for?

Discussion in 'Diagnosis/Help' started by I love flip headlights, Jan 19, 2012.

  1. Hi, I'm hopefully picking up a '88 GT-S this weekend. He's asking $1500 and it has 193k on it. Is it worth going to check out if I need it to perform daily duties? My other car is a '96 Miata that I've gutted and can't drive it in rain/snow.

What is common to fail on ST162's with such high mileage?

    Thanks guys.

Cam seals, crank seals and valve covers are prone to leaking especially with a motor with that many miles. Check for leaks. They can be fixed, but they can leak bad and you could kill an engine in a hurry. Motor mounts are prone to being bad. Youll get super bad vibrations when you accelerate. Off the top of my head thats the major stuff.

It looks like its really good shape. But it could have rust up in the rear strut towers and behind the fenders. Almost a shame to make it a daliy driver.

  3. Thanks for the quick response! I'll be sure to check for vibrations when accelerating. Glad to see this car has a good forum. I had a Dodge Shadow but the rust was terrible and the right rear spring FELL OUT...

At least this car is Japanese, has flip headlights, and is right at my budget, if not a little over but I'm hoping he'll come down a few hundred...Would actually prefer a 5th gen but those are so rare too.

    heater controls (cheap/easy fix)
starter not responding after driving it hot, turning off, then trying to turn on again (cheap/easy fix)
    crank seals/cam seals
flexpipe tends to go faster than other parts of the exhaust
alternator usually goes a lot in our cars (easy to change)
^ because of weak ground points causing the alternator to charge a lot more than needed (easy)
and as with all old cars, rust. treat the rust and this car will treat you well

Yup, they're quick here and 193 klm is fine, depending on whose owned it and how it was treated with servicing and TLC.

You will get a good idea when you go over it, ask about books, previous owners etc.

If all the dots are connecting I would buy for 1500 clams (or less of course), all questions/problems can be answered here quickly so good luck :cheers

We wanna see pics of you driving it home :hehe

    Isn't it 193000 miles? It's a GT-S, so located in USA, no?

A resurrent problem : leaking power steering (the pressure hose or the pump itself)

Yeah. Compression/leak down test is a must. Oh and check if the thermostat sensor is cut...don't ask me why.

Miles or Klm, he said Klm. But untill we hear more who knows, if it is in fact miles then definately/absolutely/positively check HG and do a compression test.

    Why the thermo sensor :hehe

  13. Why would the thermostat sensor be cut? I did notice the water temp gauge was not responsive. Drove it 40 minutes home and it didn't move from the Cold end of the spectrum...the clutch slips especially in 3rd but if I baby it, it should last another few thousand miles til I can afford to fix it. Speedo doesn't work either. Need new door panels, and the power windows, locks and sunroof do not work.

Got it for $1,000 with an extra set of wheels&tires. Here she is next to my Miata

Looking forward to learning a lot here! First step is to change all the fluids over the next week or two. Then valve cover gasket, and see from there...Glad to be a part of this group!

Congrats, you bought it and saved 500 clams for some repairs, It looks sweet and you don't seem to have any serious issues (I hope), I can't speak alot about manual gearboxes cause mines an auto but I will hazard a guess and say a new clutch plate, other lads here are better informed.

How was the drive home ie.. noises, engine performance etc ? Any rust under/in/around guards etc. What is wrong with the door panels. Can we see a couple of interior and engine pics

@ Zaluss, I think you may be onto it, are you talking about the cooling fan switch - plug - connector on the thermo housing or the coolant temperature sending unit ?

@ Flips - You say that your temp guage did not move off cold, did it actually move at all ?. If so then the coolant temperature sending unit is ok but your thermostat is stuck open and not allowing the engine to warm properly, especially in that cold weather. Correct me if I'm wrong lads as I'm always learning as I'm looking at my BGB and checking my engine bay.

I'm a tad useless with electrics, check fuses for starters I guess, I have no idea about speedos on these things. You could also try the search function here.

Has your car done 193 Klm or miles ?

Your Miata is called a Mazda MX 5 here in Australia, those green wheels are a sight to behold :shock :hehe

  15. Those green wheels are my winter wheels, I know it can be a bit too green for some people lol.

The Celica has 193,000 miles, not kilometers. The temp gauge did not move at all. Like the gauge might be broken or something. What sensor would that be? The only noise I heard was at idle, seemed like the exhaust was rattling a little bit somewhere in the middle, maybe where the cat meets the header/midpipe needs to be tightened up. Will check on that when I change all my fluids next weekend. I'll take some interior and engine pics tomorrow. The trunk struts are shot and I'll need to buy new ones. I wish Exedy made a clutch kit for the 3S-GE...might just go with BeckArnley or whatever cheap brands around/under $130. There is some typical rust bubbles around the rear wheels and sunroof but the frame is fine.

What repair manual do you guys recommend? Haynes or Chiltons? I want to use it to replace my clutch and speedometer cable.

yep check your fuses for the door locks and sunroof.

    change your therm.

check your linkage for the slipping......but more than likely its the clutch.

did you hear your fans kick in?

Congrats on the new ride !!! It is a coupe, and they are well known for trunk lid hinges bending, breaking, and damaging the trunk lid itself. Keep them lubed and make sure to replace the struts if they have failed, it eases the pressure on the hinges themselves.

Onya Nate, I mentiond the fan connector on the stat housing and totally forgot to mention the fans themselves.

Rick, you mention the hatch hinge, thaifighter had one snap, then the hatch popped up and gouged the roof itself, nasty, I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen a pic.

    Major service
    Gaskets & seals
    Clutch
    Electrical gremlins
    Rust

Nice looking car but in much the same condition most of us got ours
The boot on the coupe's is notorious for sticking and bending, check and lube those hinges
Check thourougly for rust and get it before it gets you

If the thermostat sensor is cut - the fans will stay on permanently (Why cut??? All you need do is disconnect it, sounds like another evil genuis owner)
Sounds like it has no thermostat or the temp sensor or guage is f/d, temp sensor sits below the oil pressure sensor
For Sunroof & lights - pull the covers and measure for voltage, no volts - fix fuses, volts - fix switches
Speedo cable is easy - it's a small section above the gearbox that snaps
    [IMG]
Lube your speedo & gear cables while you do the valve cover etc

I think that was the first time I've seen that effect on a hatchback car. Coupes and convertibles in the 4th and 5th Gens are very well known for this happening (Just look at the prices for good used replacements on eBay). My 'Vert had the same problen, and literally ripped the sheet metal on the decklid where the hinge bolted up to, along with bending the corner quite a bit. It was not a cheap repair as 'Vert and coupe decklids are different and very hard to come by...
