    Hey guys,

I just bought a 87' Celica GTS and I thought I'd join the community of fellow ST162 owners. I am planning to daily this car so my goal is to fix it up a bit and restore some of the interior. I will be focusing more on longevity rather than performance since I have another car for that area. This is my first time owning a Toyota and so I know that I'm going to need a lot of help. So far, I've noticed that the car has an exhaust leak, water leak from the 2 rear-side windows and the engine is leaking oil from somewhere that i cannot pin-point because there will be smoke coming from the back of the intake manifold from time to time. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

i literally laughed because that's pretty much the summary of the 4th gen LOL

    - exhaust leak is most likely the flex pipe, due to the engine mounts being too mushy
    - water leak, tear apart rear interior, have someone spray water onto the car, you'll find it. (if you don't quite want to take off the interior just yet, take off the rubber grommet in the spare tire area to make sure you don't make a swimming pool for now)
    - leaking oil. which kind? 4th gens are notorious for power steering leaks. and the pump is right under the intake manifold. the high pressure hose has been the culprit for most.

either way, welcome to the site! hopefully we can help you out to turn this car into a reliable classic :)

yep more than likely its your power steering thats causing the smoke........dont pull the windows to seal just do it from the inside

just wise advise: never remove those rear windows.

the smoke is either power steering, but i'd say valve cover gasket.

    nice prefacelift gts.

btw: i've always considered the gts chassis to handle roughly the same as the dc2 usdm integra (stock for stock). your thoughts?

Hehez really? I'm glad you got a good laugh then.

    - It sounds like the exhaust leak is coming from the muffler and so I'll probably be replacing that.
    - Thanks for the tip. I've pin-pointed the major leaks on the car.
    - I checked today and yeah, power steering leak. Do you think it's the pump or can I get away with just replacing the hoses? I have oil leaks too turns out.

    Thanks for your help.

    Alrighty appreciate it bro.

    Thanks CelicaSteve.:)

Gotcha. Will not remove rear windows.
It's both. Plus oil pan gasket. :sad5

    DC2 vs ST162 or ZZT231?

I did not really have a chance to drive my GTS up the canyons or anything like that due to the leak so I can't really say. But I will definitely get back to you once I have. :D

-i've heard different things, but the majority has been the power steering hose itself. check out rick89gts's thread covering that topic.

-i think he means the ST162. the 4th gen was considered one of the best handling fwd cars in it's time, before the ITR took that over later on. of course, with a 25 year old chassis, might not be the same without seam welding some strength back into the chassis.

    - I will be sure to do that.

    - Really? I never knew that wow. Maybe changing a few suspension parts can help. :cool

    Bad news...

Timing belt is contaminated with oil; so gotta change that out plus probably the water pump and thermostat too. [IMG]

Btw, water leaks through the moonroof so do I replace the weather strip directly around the moonroof panel or...?

    - the weather strip directly for the sunroof
    - timing belt oil contamination, make sure you check the oil pump seal while you're down there. just a few extra bolts that would be worth it because it is a trouble area. that and of course you'd check the front main seal.

you can get a full seal kit for the timing side still. i'd change the cam and crank and pump seals.

Hi Willie, you can call me Zee.

Here's an UPDATE, so I replaced:

    - Valve Cover Gasket
    - Timing Belt and Water Pump
    - Thermostat and Gasket
    - Oil pump seal, Cam Seals and Crank Seal
    - Drive Belts, ALT Belt and Power Steering Belt
    - Got a free used muffler (compliments of Tech3)

I still have a long list to go before the car is done.
The front sway bar bushings are gone, I need front shocks (need recommendations), a new clutch, motor mounts are done and the car need tires.

Also, I took a familiar ascending circular ramp to hop onto another freeway with the GTS and the car handled pretty well even with blown shocks in the front. Can't wait to change the shocks out and see what its capable of. XD
