MAN - I started to take pictures when I was doing that repair (governor), and wish I had of now. When I am "back on my feet" I may simulate doing it (for picture's sake) while I am doing the brakes anyway. It is only about 4 bolts past removing the CV axle on the left, so it wouldn't be a lot past the brakes for me to "do it again" for pictures.

I am thinking it must be a commonly-replaced part for the transmission parts place here in a city of 60,000 to stock it. I say that because it seems like a relatively obscure part for a non-Toyota place to have in stock. That tells me he must sell at least a few of them a year. The little baggie that the new part came in actually says "Governor, A130/140, 84-up" and then has below that the same part number he wrote on the receipt "U67680B." Even if this ends up being a "weakness" that needs replacing close to the interval that the original owner had it replaced (at 71,000 miles and the car 7 years old), it is only about $40 and easily-replaced. This would be about the same interval as doing the TB/WP/belts/seals and those parts cost a lot more than $40 (buying OEM stuff) and take a lot more effort to get to than this governor does. I still love, love, love this car - can't really explain it! :D

all the 5 speeds have a nylon gear that rides on the differential...for the speedo. i know all the usdm governers are ecu based rev and speed. jdm cars don't have either.

Would it be yall's guess that this would fit an A131L transmission too? I am helping my pregnant daughter and son-in-law look for a second car and that is the transmission that is in a 1992 Geo Prizm (Corolla) I am looking at (that is having the same symptoms my Celica had, transmission only shifting into first and reverse). Sound like a familiar problem with them too?

Can't help on that one but I'd definitely strip the rolla one out and compare
