    1. What is a halftrac? An Altrac is a turbocharged 4wd celica, a halftrac is a gt or gts with a turbo engine that is only front wheel drive

    2. what is the difference of pre and pst facelift? front grills are slightly different, front side markers are slightly different, taillights are slightly different
    heater controls are slightly different

    3. what car do I HAVE???its an 87gt, 16v single cam....automatic
    A. what motor is that? the 3sfe maybe?

    You have a pre facelift (86-87) gt = 3sfe = 4 lug rims

    4. How do I convert it from 4lug to five, rear drums to disk and has anyone put a B&M shifter or any other aftermarket shifter for an automatic?????
Find a gts in the junkyard everything should just swap right over

    5. what parts transfer from cars IE mr2, camry other toyotas???
some starters, most altenators, some trannies

    1.
Halftracs are not oem, their owner swapped a turbo'd engine in them :)

    2.
There are some other interior stuff like steering wheel, and switches that are different.

1)The "halftrak" term is incorrect, even the GTE swaps don't use the 4x4 gearbox as it's a pita to convert one to FWD and the FWD box isn't LSD - so to call a GTE swap a halftrak is completely incorrect but the term has stuck over time.
I'm building a 4x4 box for FWD with LSD, it will technically be a Halftrak
GT2 is a better term for a turbo swap

2)There are tons of differences besides the obvious outer changes, crossmembers, column switches, heater controls, window switches, door panels, wiring harnesses, headlight motors etc are a few I can think of

    3) Your FE motor only has 1 pulley but it is a true twincam 16v, so is the 4A-FE, 7A-FE etc

4)Just swap everything as Dave said - You can even use GT4 or Camry/Windom/Solara front brakes. Rear brakes/hubs are the same on ST182 and Camry/W/S.
The 4 lug is rare and based on the Corolla, you can use later Corolla stuff and there are tons more rim options for the 4 lug. The WRC cars were also 4 lug

B&M won't work, there is no aftermarket shifter and nothing you can do to modify it other than swapping for a JDM
type (ECT-S box) with a manual mode and an economy mode. It would require major surgery and expense for very little gain

5)Camry, ST182 and MR2 are the most common

6)That's why we're the #1 Celica site - the guys here are HARDCORE! (and a great bunch)

Thanks for all the info guys, Okay so I understand a bit more now, still confused as to what the face lift consists of. and whats really wierd is that after running my vin it says that its suppose to be an 8valve single 2L, But its clearly a twin cam 16v:banghead....
So much to learn...and I thought this was going to be easy...I open the hood to my Silverado and I know eery bit an piece in there. and its like 4 times bigger. I open the hood on the Celica and its like what the hell is all this crap...theres so much stuff stuffed in here.:mystery...
Its such a shame we dont all live closer, but I feel that would be bad news for everyone else around us....and again thanks guys for welcoming me in the world like this, its a big load off the shoulders Knowing Ive got good peeps to guide me along on this new journey of such a fun little car. and somewhat rare as I havent really seen many on the road around here.

True, start reading and looking around and you'll see the differences, look at my sales for some of the different parts. Read my thread (link below) and it will give you an insight into the differences as there are differences between countries too

I think B&M requires a manual mode box, your's isn't and trying to shift it will kill it, I've seen guys slam it into gear to do burnouts and the box was history in a few weeks.
The JDM box isn't a "manual mode" either - it only allows you to lock the gear you are in to drive on slippery surfaces or tow uphill.
The economy mode just shifts the shift points down for better economy.

You can move the O/D switch wherever you want

The auto isn't a cable change, the cable is attached to a switch which controlls solenoids inside the box.
All the shaft does is to engage the park brake etc

Not sure, how do I tell? Heres a picture of the motor not sure it will help..I ran the vin on several sites just to see but never paid so I didnt get the full report. I do know that all four sites said it was a 87 gt celica but but it was a 50/50 whether it was a 8v or 16v. it say 16v right on the motor so thats what i was going with..

it's definitely 3S-FE Twincam 16v! it uses one cam pulley on the intake and there's two big gears near the middle of the camshaft to run the exhaust cam.

if you pop off the spark plugs and take off the 4 big nuts with an adjustable wrench, you'll see

Wish they would get their shit together lol...anyway thanks guys for the info I am learning allot..So I washed it yesterday and installed a old cheap stereo as I yet am unable to lock the car so im really ify about leaving anything in it. the key I have for the ignition doesn't fit in the locks not even the glove-box lock. It has electric locks so I'm thinking of just installing a alarm system so it lock and unlock with a press of the button. Normally installing a stereo would be to complicated but I had to re-run all the wiring do to a rat that was found in the car shortly after I bought it.

Been meaning to post this for a couple of days but haven't had a chance. Using our members cars, here's how you visually identify whether a car is zenki (pre-facelift) or kouki (facelifted version):

Pre-facelift front end on 86CelicaGTS's car. Note the all-orange USDM corner lights:

Facelift front end on CelicaSteve's car. Note the JDM corner lights with clear upper section.

Pre-facelift tails on thesherv's car. Note the JDM corner vents.

Facelift tails on Jamezzy's car. Note the USDM corner reflectors.

As the other guys have said, there are heaps more differences but that's you're at-a-glance guide.

    Cheers
    Matt

I want the front end of celicasteves car, with the rear lights of theshervs car....What DO I NEED???? Also How do I mount the left and right spoiler? I only have the Middle portion on and cant figure out the two sides as there are no holes or anything...:banghead

You'll need a facelift grille, headlight eyebrows, and a set of JDM (and ADM, Euro, etc) corner lights for the front, for the rear you just need the black corner vents, you already have the pre-facelift tails. The grille and headlight bits you shouldn't have trouble finding in a wrecking yard, though I think a little modification is required to get them to fit (do a search, there are other threads on the subject somewhere). For the tail corner vents, have a look in the for sale section of the forum, someone might have a set, or put up a WTB thread. No mods required for the tail vents, they bolt straight in.

You'll need to drill a couple of holes in your rear quarter panel to mount the side bits of the rear spoiler, basically underneath the bit you can see is a mounting plate that is bolted to the body, and the top bit is then bolted to that. Again, you'll either need to find one in a wrecking yard, or find someone parting out a car online and get them to separate them for you. One you have the pieces you can mark your quarter panel up and drill it to suit.

Most of us have been looking for parts for years, fun part of these is you can't just order whatever you want so very satisfying when the parcels arrive.
I even have some parts on my car nobody else has

You already have the Euro tail lights? For some reason Europe never got the facelift light (fog light I think)

Nah, not the foglight version, but he's got the pre-facelift tails and with a good polish it would take a serious trainspotter to tell the difference:

....and OMFG Kev, where did you get those mirror eyebrow things? I've never seen them before! Now I must find a pair! Or kill you and steal yours hahahahaha

I have now fitted those to TEMS and there is an extra bulb hole in the centre above the reverse light.
I guess that's where the foglight goes - which would mean the lights are the same?

I got the eyelids from Oz, story goes they came from a WRC car, there were alu doors etc also up for grabs and judging the logo it looks like a TTE or TRD logo?
I've lost the pics of the doors so I can't even tell you what/who's car it was

1st thing I do on all my cars is to fit an alarm with c/locking, they are cheap nowdays and I haven't used a key in a door in years

Besides - How many cars can you park next to an Enzo without looking like crap?

I never realized there was a model with rear fogs.

So which markets, which years, and which models received them? I'm curious because I many have some in my possession.

Looks like all the euro models had an extra bulb above the reverse light and a foglight switch for it, the JDM has holes for bulbs there but none fitted.
They didn't get facelift lights, I suspect because there's no extra bulb location
