ST165 VS ST205 Gear box?

    So I've got some questions about the gear boxes. My ST205 swap came with a gear box that I plan on using...I've noticed one difference visually so far that has got me curious.

    Below are the pictures of the two gear boxes focusing on the area of my question.

    The ST205 box appears to have something deleted from it in production. What is this on the 165 box and why doesn't the 205 box have it?

    Not really sure what it's for,

    Now im curious as my 165 don't have that on either unless the box has been changed out some time for a 205 which is the norm over hear in the UK. With the 205 being the stronger box.

    Does your box grind at all? My 165 box would grind only while down shifting to 3rd. I'm curious if the 185 boxes are like the 165 or the 205.

    Hopefully stig or someone else will chime in here soon with some more information. I haven't found anything online about what this is yet.

    No mate the gear change is as smooth has silk up and down the box.

    I know mine had an engine replacement so wondering if they changed the box to for the 205 box

    Scott the ST205 box (E154F) has extra synchros on 3rd gear and reverse as compared to the ST165 box (E50F).

    It's been a while since I actaully looked at an E50F so I can't tell you what's been deleted as the transmission was revised over the years. But I can tell you that the E154F is the best box you can get for our turbo 4WD application. Like Shaun said, it should shift like cutting through butter.

    That's what I've heard. But there appears to be something different with the center diff as well judging from these pictures. SOMEBODY has to know lol. I may just tear into mine and see

    I wouldn't do that unless you have to. There certainly isn't anything stopping you from using it if that's what you're concerned about. The center diff is different.....I have an E56 from an ST202......the box has roughly the same internals as the E154F except for the transfer case (represented by the "F" at the end of the tranny ID). When I look at my tranny manual (which includes the E154F) I can see that they updated something about the center diff or the front diff. From what I remember they updated it to be LSD. I'd have to reread the manual to jog my memory.

    Do yourself a favor and check out the ID stamp near the starter on the old tranny. That might clue us in on which version it was (probably the "F2").

    Let me clarify. I'm not concerned at all about using the 205 trans...I'm aware that it is the better/stronger trans and It is already installed in my car. This post was just for curiosity sake. From what I've read most 205's have LSD on the front diff but that still doesnt help my curiosity about what the item missing in the pictures is.

    I'm planning on rebuilding the 165 box if I can't find a buyer for it soon. at that time I will probably figure out what this "thing" is. It almost looks like some type of actuator for the center diff...but the center diff is supposed to be viscous type and shouldnt require an actuator...

    You just jogged my memory!

    The E50F1 used in the 1986-87 JDM GT-Four had a pneumatic actuator that engaged the center diff. The E50F2 used in the 1988-89 USDM Alltrac did not (which is why it uses a viscous coupling as you said). So it probably just a holdover from the casting process or the fact that they had E50F2 transfer cases readily available for use. You may have an E50F2 transfer case that was disabled prior to leaving the factory in Japan.

    That is apparently the FWD selector mechanism. I've heard of it before but never knew where it was at. This is apparently used to put the gearbox into FWD ...There is a video of someone who says that's how they dyno'd it in FWD.

    DON'T use that FWD level !! You will fuck up your box within 10 miles of driving, or maybe 100 yards :). It's 4wd and if you look into the paperworks you will read about this lever :)

    205 box doesn't have it so I can't use it lol I'm curious as to how it works and what the purpose of it is.

    Could it be used so you can tow the car with only the front wheels off the ground?

    The BGB references it but I can't recall what exactly it's used for. I do remember that it explains it right next to the page describing acceptable towing methods. So there's probably a reason for that......

    Well Shaun, considering the fact that the link posted above states that the 205 box is the only one without the FWD selector lever i guess that means you've got a 205 box. One less thing to have to buy when you do a swap!
