Even though I am skint, no job and have a new child, taking up shed loads of time, I am thinking about the future.

Trinity is going to stay a track weapon, however, I need to also take the family out in a fun car.

Two schools of thought at the mo.

Restore to standard condition with a couple of mods a ST165, prob is nearly all 165s in the uk are rottern. There are a few out there, but most are in poor nick. ST162s are sometimes in better nick, so maybe I might go half track. But I am tempted to do something slightly different.

a want to create a budget Q car.
These shape Carinas are cheap and normally sound, my plan is to get a 2.0 one and then drop in a 3sgte engine, pretty much stock, just a FMIC, EBC and custom zorst + down pipe.

Should be able to get 200bhp and use a MR2 box.

keep it plain, with black 5th gen wheels, 5th gen brakes etc.

Bingo budget Toyota family Q car.

    What do you guys think??

I reckon as we can weld the zorst etc, it should come in under £1,500 all in. :D

    Well Rich

I like the ideas, is that the BTCC shape?
Concerning the budget and the application I think it's overkill

You could do it on a 4S motor and save yourself heaps in preparation,
    fuel, repairs etc?

Does your wife need to make black stripes all the way to the shops, or are
you that desperate for parking spaces?

Sorry to be a killjoy, you're a dad now and it's going to be a family workhorse

ps. MR2 box won't work, RWD (linkages different)

The wife has her car ( a getz!!lol) which shes going to upgrade to a i30 5 door hatch, so we will still have a proper family car.

I just kinda want to get something I can take to the various shows etc as well as blast down the strip or blat round a track with a bit of fun.

I got the idea from some mates who had a mazda 323 saloon, which they fitted they 1.6 turbo lump out of the 4x4 rally car.

Its the BTTC style yeah, the ones Andy Rouse ran.

Did toy with the idea of a big power corolla, but its been done.

I would fit this with a tartan blanket on the back, nodding dog, and Zoo stickers just for the full effect.

Maybe its because the 165 is so loud and obvious, I just really have a hankering for a "Q" car and it has to fall into the Toyota range.

it prob is overkill, but how much fun would it be if I could make an old Carina mini can look alike pull 14sec Qtrs and go round a track half decently??

    Agreed, great sleeper!
You didn't say she already has vicious wheels

A S/Wagon would be even more sleepish and better for prams etc

Don't over-extend yourself, bear in mind business will get slacker as winter approaches.
Buy it and do it slowly as the budget allows

Did that shape Carina come with a 3S?

My 2p is to do something similar, only with an ST220 Avensis. We have one as a family hack which cost practically nothing, and is much younger and very reliable (our is on 148k miles). It's even quite quick with the 130bhp late-spec 3SFE in it. Only mod is some nice TTE wheels. Once past the cliched 'taxi-cab' status, I reckon they're a very good-looking car.

    Cheers,
    Jon

    2 mates-

#1 built a Nissan 1400 ute with a modded twin turbo rotary
#2 built a RWD 323 with a modded V6 Essex - that's it standing behind my red sleeper sud van

Yeah fingers crossed, I am trying to get some work on the motorsport circuit, but every bloody company is cutting back
Still when not looking for work, I have more time with Trinity and my son, so its not all bad.

Like the Avensis idea, will look and see how much I can get one for.

Cheers Jon, that looks a clean one, the only thing putting me off a newer one is the electrics, but I supppose it shouldn't be too hard.
Budget for the car would be £750 - £800 tops, ideally sub £600.

was looking at the later Carina E models too. Think they did a sporty 3sge engined one, but that would be out of my price range.

Still fun now looking on ebay!!
