Power steering to manual rack conversion?

Since the forum's database was rolled back a few months, I am reposting this.

My Celica is leaking power steering fluid at the moment, and I will either need to fix it, top up the fluid, or change it to a manual rack eventually. Most people say that it is as simple as removing the power steering pump belt, but is that all that is needed? I have read on other forums about different cars that it should be depressurized, and some people install a loop-back pipe and top off the PS fluid before converting it to a manual rack. Are the Celica's racks designed differently, or is this unnecessary?

    Thanks,
    Teran

if you want my opinion, i wouldnt bother swapping to a maunal rack, your stock rack will do just fine. loop back the lines coming otu of the steering box, with somefluid in there to help keep things lubed up. as for the rack, just put some fluid in it to keep the seals good, put a few bolts to seal off the rack. yes you can just take off the ps belt, but thats the ghetto way to do it, imo do whatt i did with my car, pull the pump, resivoir, lines (high pres, low pres) clean up and seal the rack, and steering box. keep in mind, at low speeds the car is a bitch to turn....

  3. Is there a manual rack that will fit the ST162? My power rack is leaking really bad. The car sat for a while with the wheels turned and once it got moved I assume it took a seal out as it will stop leaking when parked and turned hard to the right.
