is my 89 gt-s obd1? i am in the process of getting a snap on scanner for diagnosing my 98 camry and was wondering if the 89 celica had a port or not. thanks!
anything older than 96' is obd1 anything till the present is an obd2 your celica will have a port, but its not universal like the obd2's and those crappy wallmart scanners wont tell you shit all... unless you buy a decent full diagnostics tool, all you will be doing is wasting your money. if your going snap on, a solace is what to get, thats what i have used with great result
plan to get a snap on mt 2500. then i am getting the import pack or the two toyota cartridges and port connectors. i would get the solace but its 1k, but the 2500 is only 125, so yeah. i thought it was obd just wanted to make sure. thanks
i dont like the solace because of its name, to be honest most snap on tools are the same as the average brand. but i do like what it can do... like run full tests with a graph showing everything.. a very well rounded unit. you can scan your celi with a jumper wire, it takes some getting used to, but does work, all obd 1 is, is just a few simple sensors feeding data to the ecu, obd2 was made primarily for emissions bs.. to meet standards, as obd1 could not...
ah got ya. thats cool. i think im gunna get it. i like how my shop professor showed me how to use it on my camry. plus it will come in handy in the future for sure. thanks for the help.
oh yeah I know about the paper clip and the light counting. this is more for the 98 camry and any future cars I plan to get. I am usually about 10-20 years behind in the automotive field so I figured that the red brick would be nice to have.
the brick sucks. if you can get it for like 100 bucks then cool. the solus is a peice of junk. the solus pro is very nice. the modis is stupid slow. the modis pro is huge. the vantage is a glorified "o" scope. the vantage pro is a fast track book and a glorified "o" scope. i had the solus. after the 3rd one i demanded a different model so i got the pro. i've only returned the pro for a backlighting issue that seems specific to mine (yay). the brick was great in the 90's. now it might as well be a SUN machine. i have one of those at work. nearly 2" of dust on it. all you really need professionally is a test light, solus pro or genesys system (or similar [the mentor and the seterminator are bot genisys systems]), and a good fluke multimeter. and of course alldata or mitchell. everything else is a nicety. luckily for me and what i have, pretty much if there is a computer in the car, i can scan it. i have the works for my solus pro.
hahaha yeah. it would be nie to have a solus pro. can't afford that luxury though. the brick is 125, doesnt include any cables, keys or cartridges. i may out this on hold for a while. its just something i want and not something i really need right now. i need to get the celica up to par before smog and the summer. i got plans to go on a small road trip for my vacation, and I really dont want to take the camry. thanks for the info mafix.
awesome, thanks for the tip. Most of the ones that have the keys and the cartridges are going for 150-900. looks like I will just have to use the school one for a while on the camry till I can afford a decent one. have you heard anything about the microscanner from snap-on? was going to get one of those but it blew up in price.
