I still say the rubbers on your springs are fooked or the dampers aren't tight.

I have a similar "thunking" sound and I'm going to try your idea. Clever, I never thought about taking the sway bar off. Very clever!

You don't need to remove it, just disconnect one side

Hi, a common problem on the ST165 with rear clacking noise is rear differential bushing. It must be torn/worn out.

Hey Stig, if it's the spring cushions, will it cause an intermittent thumping / bumping sound?

Thats the upper cup, there should be a rubber inside it and also on the lower cup
I had to replace mine due to this problem and also ground down the sharp edges on the springs to stop it recurring

You could also slip some rubber pipe over the coils at both ends for 1 revolution

    Correct pic for an ST162:

I replaced the lower ones, will check the upper ones too. If they are worn or damaged, and the guys at the suspension shop didn't mentioned it when they replaced the lower ones, I'll go mad for sure... :cuss :aargh

Other problem I found was the strut incorrectly inserted into the upper cup.
There's slots and most of the shocks I stripped weren't fitted properly which
showed wear around the slots and possibly noise as well.

    Here's what I'm talking about
    [IMG]

Grind these sharp edges down, the King's springs chewed straight through the rubbers
    because of these sharp edges

itf that cup on the top isnt on perfectly in line they will throw the spring out causing it to shake a little

Trying to find a complete strut assembly to swap in instead of disassembling it...

Maybe these pics I took yesterday will show the common causes of noise in the suspension

Faulty top bearing, should be no play at all - this one was loose and on opening there was a ball missing
    [IMG]

Spring hitting cup or spring - look for witness marks
    [IMG]

Misaligned top mount, (this is a good one) and holes in cup rubbers
    [IMG]

99% of the shocks I've stripped have one or all of these faults, all is not well in Celica strut world

I've come to realize that the rubber shrouds are a giveaway, if they are torn like these
it means that the shock has been incorrectly assembled and things aren't lined up properly

    Aaaand the winner is: Seank90.

The car is currently at our Celica guru who did the 100.000 km service on the engine yesterday and checked the suspension. He found everything in order, and said that the clacking comes from inside the steering rack. I asked what's the solution, and he told me that currently it's working properly, and there is no need to rebuild it, if I can live with the noise. So I guess that's it. Sooner or later I will rebuild that too, but until that at least I know that everything is okay :)

Hmm, just curious, was your noise only on one side of the car?

No, I hear it from both sides.
