    Halp?

Once again, I am in need of specs/measurements/etc of a stock ball joint off a st162 (GTS, but I"m pretty sure they're all the same).

I need to do wheel bearings, figure I may as well try to install the ball joints while I'm at it.

    What measurements do you need?
Just replace them, I have spare units lying around but new they are cheap

Visually, the st184 and st162 are the same. I don't see a difference. This wasn't with a physical comparison hand in hand, but rather images from the Moog and other such producers.

Now looking up part numbers, they're different. The ST184 is different than the ST162 both on the EPC and auto part shops.

Without tearing into my car (yet) I'm trying to determine if these will work. Why am I trying this? Because I have a set of ST184 ball joints along with ST184 wheel bearings on my parts shelf. I know the wheel bearings will fit, they are the same part number from Toyota and aftermarket replacements.

Why do I have ST184 ball joints you ask? Well when I bought those Megan coilovers for the car they came with it (along with inner and outer tie rods, sway bar links, wheel bearings, etc).

Now here's a real kicker. Remember back when I was trying to figure out if the ST184 tie rods were the same as the ST162? Yeah. Toyota and aftermarket producers show the inner tie rods part numbers different between the ST184 and ST162. However, the ST184 inner tie rods I have matched up exactly the same as the ones I pulled off my ST162. So I'm thinking the ball joint from the ST184 will also work on my ST162.

Now why do I think that? Well when looking up the ball joints I found even more interesting information. First off, ST184. Moog lists their ST184 ball joint as working for 89-93. Is that year model or manufacturer year? If it's the first, I'm golden. My car (according to Autocheck) has a manufacture date of 08/1988. That then brings up ANOTHER question. Because my car was so late in the ST162 production run that they started using ST184 parts? I'm really inclined to say yes because of the fitment of all the ST184 parts I've installed so far.

1st - ST18x joints wont fit - check my thread as I'm having that problem with my ST185 hubs.
The pin is bigger and the bolt spacing is different
2nd - The ST18x started production in 9/89, usually when you see 89- it refers to the ST18x
3rd - The bearings will fit, I swapped ST16x bearings into my ST185 huibs 2 weeks ago

I know the wheel bearings will fit, I said that above.

You say check your thread. Perhaps you could be a little more clear as to which one of your 3,234 posts you're referring to.

I see it and use it quite often!!! Lost of useful info in there!:cheers2

I too should look into doing ball joints soon. I would imagine that all of these cars should need them done since they are 23+ years old.

Well guys if all else fails and you can't find the links, check with www.rockauto.com they give cross refrence and all applicable vehicles for nearly every part they sell. Not to take anything away from the Stig, it's just my personal on-line reference guide, cause I have so many different model Toyotas to work on.

It was just a simple question. There is nothing in the first post in that thread regarding ball joints or anything related to what I was inquiring about. A simple 'no they won't work I'm having that issue on my car now' would of been sufficient.

    Anyway..back on topic.

Racerb I already ordered them. I dropped the knuckles yesterday and did some measurements. The stud with the cotter pin on the hub side of the ball joint fits just fine. The problem is the spacing on ball joint to arm mount. I could simply enlarge/oblong out the hole on the arm that is off and it would work just fine.
