Well let me do a bit more investigating on the differences between gts & trac heads. I do know that the head gasket is different for the 2 engines so what the difference is I dont know. It may be different thicknesses or the trac one may be made out of a better material. In the EPC they look the same but who knows for sure.

I wanted to see if there was a difference in the size of the cams which may have prevented the valves from closing all the way but my all trac manual refers me back to the GTS manual so the cam lobes for both engines open valves to the same depth and close valves to the same height.

So it really shouldn't make much difference which set of cams you use. Their may be minor performance gains by useing one set over the other but either set should run the engine pretty well.

So I really doubt you are loosing very much compression out the head.

You may also be getting low readings if the starter isn't turning the engine over fast enough. To do a compression test you should have the engine cranking at at least 250 rpm.

not sure about 250 rpm, but it sounds like one of the fastest starter motors ive heard, i can hear compression when i take out 3 spark plugs but leave one in. and sometimes the tachometer jumps to a high number but usually stays low.

i dont get it, it should have compression i mean, the valve gap if any should still show up....and the cam timing is still one tooth off... but how big a difference would that make?

Dont forget to check your Start Injector.

And make sure your ignitor is plug in correctly- Its the grey box behind the Intake Manifold.

ok, my dads friend (56 yr old mechanic) came over today... he had a look at my car, and its just amazing to see, how the things the young mechanics think are impossible, you see the experienced mechanics tricks go to play.

so heres what he did; he set the timing, the tensioner was jammed, and the bolt was loose (never noticed) and the intake had jumped 2 teeth, the exhaust 1, then he said to crank the engine over, unfortunately the battery was too low, so its charging overnight...but the engine did try to start, we did hear that.

he sed that cuz the engine sat for so long without a head, and fresh air getting in the cylinder bores, the oil had dried up, causing the piston rings to behave as if they were badly worn, (loss of compression) so when one of the cylidners fired and the others tried to catch on, it just didnt happen becuase of dried cylinders, harder to fire,

and somethign for everyone to know!!!

HE SED THAT WHEN TRYING TO GET AN ENGINE TO FIRE, DONT PUSH ON THE PEDAL, BECUASE THE ECU WILL THINK THAT YOU THINK THE ENGINE IS FLOODED AND WILL CUT THE FUEL OFF.

so hopefully it will start tommorow,

just a thankyou in advance to mitt4g, ST165-2765, and XR pilot

you are all godsends....even mitt for noticeing how long this forum has been going for lol.

Hmmm seized piston rings does sound plausible :) Hope it all goes well for you tomorrow!

Depending on the car, pushing on the pedal does activate a flood clear mode, but you generally have to hold the pedal to the floor.

JESUS DAMMIT MERCY IT JUST WONT START!!!

i sat there with the starter on, and the car is trying to fire, i can hear it firing but not running, the crack in my exhaust manifold is letting out gray smoke which is from what i no, half combustion...its just trying to fire it just cant get it to go!.

Try flooring the gas pedal and I do mean all the way to the floor while it is cranking.

the psi and compression ratio go hand in hand i believe. I dunno the exact figures but 170 psi vs 130 would be like running 10:1 and 8:1. If your only getting 90 psi and you engine was pissing coolant its never gonna run again for any amount of time unless you fix the problem. Sounds bad sadly, sorry for ocming in late on this post

hey sorry i edited my old post cuz it wasnt really behind the times in the converstaion. Ether is engine starter, like going from poof to BOOM. sold in a spray can

o ok, yeh ive tried that

my mate sed to literally try squirting some petrol down the intake.....?

try ether, desperate times call for desperate measures, but not too much just a little spray to start with, if the compressino is too low i just might never fire till fixed

    it nearly ran today
    omfg!!

i heard the low humm it wnet

ru ru ru Bru ru Bru Bruuuu ru ru Bu rur

but again, it just couldnt catch on

the car started today! i held the throttle to about 1500-2000 and let it warm up and stuff, just to break it in.

but heres hte bad news, good thing im selling it becuase it was like driving a pedal powered army tank. incredibly slow. so i check the compression now that the engine is going.. i got around 50 psi, and 54 psi o cylinder no4

no way can i afford new piston rings so fuck it ill just sell it. it sounds like bad news to all you celica lovers but to me its just another car that i will never forget.

Well I'm sorry to hear your selling it and yes it is just another car..... but a fun car if it's working properly.

I am glad to hear that you got it running though. It sounds to me like the former owner probably drove it for some time with a leaking head gasket. You did alot of hard and complicated work on that engine. Putting in a new set of rings would have been easy for you and you may have been able to clean the cylinder walls up enough with a good hone but if you were to go to the trouble of putting in new rings then getting the cylinders re bored is really worth the money and in most cases required.

yeah every car i find myself doing more and more work, first it was a gearbox swap on a gemini, stripping down of a mazda 626, tuning a lada niva, head swap on a celica, whats next lol atleast im learning

thanks for all the help man!

Are you going to be getting another 4th gen celica?
I'm thinking of selling my celica aslo because i'm not happy with it even thought I've put tones of hours into it. I'm looking at maybe getting a 5th gen for a 4th.. Depends on what I come across for a good price.
    Anyway, good luck.
