86 GT-S Turbo HalfTrac Project *Update*

Discussion in 'Your 4th Gen beauty' started by celica1986gts, Jun 27, 2008.

  1. Hey guys. So I found a hell of a deal on this 86 GT-S. The previous owner is a Toyota Master Tech. He got it from an old lady who was the original owner who had stopped driving it at 70,000 because there was a ping in the engine.

Th engine he swapped to is a JDM 2nd gen 3S-GTE, but its not JUST any 3sgte, its the WRC edition engine. Stock HP at 240. 224 to the wheels at 9lbs of boost. No boost controller, blow-off valve or turbo timer. I figure the cost of the engine plus what it would cost to install it would be somewhere around $5000. I paid $3000 for the car, so I think I got a good deal.

    Plans in the next month:

Euro side lights from my other Celica
Paint job to Nautical Blue Metallic
Transfer stereo from my other car
    fix muffler noise. (add resonator)

    Further on:

    Boost controller
    Intake
    Tires

Here are a few pictures of the "new" Celica. Just put the rims on and they really make the car at this point...

The car also has a custom molded 4th gen hood with WRC scoop. I just need some of that chicken fence wire type stuff to put on it...

Nice score, decent price. I wouldn't change the colour, that silver is beautiful.

Odd, I see the 1st Gen 3SGTE WTA IC on top. What happened to the more efficient and sought after WRC IC?

Lot of goodies for $3000. Got any close-ups of the CS vent?

  4. Yeah it has the Water to air IC. He said they were better and that the Air to Air ICs do about as much cooling as blowing on it with a straw. He put the 1st gen IC on there. Is there any truth to that?

And bare with me here Rick...but what is a CS vent?

Also I haven't actually seen the car in person yet guys so you are seeing as much as I have. My friend picked it up and AZ for me. I'm going home on Monday so I will see and drive it then.

On the drive back from AZ my friend beat a ROUSH Mustang as well as a modified Eclipse on the freeway.

The CS vent just means the hood scoop, CS = Carlos Sainz, legendary Toyota Team WRC driver. The difference? The vent lets hot engine bay air out, whereas a scoop brings cold air in to feed the ATA IC.

ATA vs WTA IC...aaaahhhh, the classic debate!
You won't get a concensus b/c it depends on your mods and needs.

Briefly, WTA adds more weight but is good on a lower level HP applications. Some like the ATA better as a front mount as opposed to a top mount, b/c it has more efficient airflow and is less prone to heatsoak. Also has less weight b/c no coolant.

Most of the high HP turbo cars have ATA FMIC (front mount intercoolers).

I could go on and on but no one is in agreement and I'm not an expert in any event. Just wanted to give you an overview. I'm sure some of the guys will chime in with their opinions.

I don't want to sound like a downer, but judging from your mechanic's comments about replacing the ATA IC, you may actually have a regular 2nd Gen 3SGTE with the stock, top mounted, ATA IC replaced by the 1st Gen WTA IC.

For your sake, I hope I'm wrong, but just be aware. More pics will tell the tale.

The JDM 2nd Gen motor, whether or not a WRC motor, is still rated to 225 HP on the JDM ECU and higher octane Japanese fuel. USDM is 200 HP. The 3rd Gen 3SGTE, which yours is not, is rated at 240 HP.

Nevertheless, still a great deal for a car with that much into it. I'd have jumped on that in a second. Looking forward to seeing more pics.

Unfortunatly I would have to agree with rick. If it was an RC engine it would have come with a WTA intercooler like the one0 pictured and unless the intercooler was damaged he would have used the 185 WTA intercooler instead of the 165 WTA intercooler that you have. If he said the engine came with a ATA intercooler then it is a standard 2nd gen All Trac engine.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but that is no rc motor. it's a 2nd gen gte all right. not sure which model but it still has the 3" AFM so not an rc engine. now to get a pic of the ecu to see if it's a 90-91 or 92-93

thats a standard gen II 3sgte from the looks of it. Change that metal pipe between the turbo and intercooler, Its badly sized.

    Jeremy's old car! :D

  10. That IC is worth like a grand or something by itself so he wanted to keep that one.

ok I'm the dumb ass here. lol but whats an AFM again? (air flow monitor?) and how can you tell its not a WRC engine just by looking at it?

Heres a link to the guys photobucket with a bunch of pics of the engine. I will take more of whats currently in there when I get back to TN.

ST165-2765 if you look at some of those you will see the IC that you have pictured in your post which he replaced with the 1st gen 3sgte WTA IC.

Yep, 2nd Gen GTE CS/RC* version with 225HP but the bastard kept the WTA IC for himself! You can find them on Ebay for about $500.

The only Time I have heard WRC mentioned when talking about 3SGTE engines is the 3rd gen units used in the 205 WRC models, which come with a load of homolgation bits, not connected, such as water Injection etc.

If Its a stock 2nd Gen CS/RC engine, its still a good base engine, But I would upgrade back to the bigger charge cooler again if you can.

    Cool find though!

  13. Got the exhaust fixed today. Added a resonator as the car is quite loud because of the straight back 3" piping. Great performance, but too loud. Got the muffler pulled back about 3.5 inches because it was sticking out too far. (You can see that in the pictures). Fixed rattling against the under body because of poor installation. Also there was a hole in some piping for the IC thus all water leaking out, which got fixed as well. Will post more pics soon! :D

More pics of the hood vent!

  15. The hood vent was just done with bondo so its not looking very good right now, cracks around the edges and stuff. I'll take a few close up for you guys. The same guy who is going to also knows fiberglassing so he is going to redo the hood scoop as well as switch out my windshield.

Also swapped the euro front sidelights from my other GT-S. Looks goooood!

(I will probably take some pics when I get the car back today if its still light, if not then tomorrow after work.)

  16. Here are a few pics of the hood vent. Looks awesome except for the color and a few bad cracks in the bondo. Not well done as you can see. I am going to get it fiberglassed in. You can also see the newly installed euro front side lights. :D

Going to add a few more tomorrow after I get off work or the exhaust re-piping and the IC leak fix.

(Side note: These pictures were taken with my Samsung Flipshot cell phone with a 3 MP camera! Pretty good for a cell phone eh?)

Nice you even got the headlight washers :D

  18. Thanks. They aren't hooked up though, will be eventually. There are other more important things I need to do first. One being installing windshield washers in that hood after I get it fiberglassed and paint the car. 8)

Oh also beat a Dodge Hemi last night...

P.S. anyone wanna make me a new sig? :D

Great pics from your cellphone. Hood looks good, just a bit o'repair, some expanded metal grill and you're all set.
