alright guys Im working on getting my 5 speed trans here in the states.
I know theres differnt types of trans that will work for our cars but i seem to always find "s53, s 54" etc etc

What I would appreciate if someone could name the year make and model that the trans came in.
and What components I would need to make it work with our car.
Really im looking for the best upgraded trans(syncro wise) 5 speed I can put in my gts and cheap to get.

Most commonly they were used in the Camry (s53), Celica (s53, s54) and MR2 (S54). Years they were found: Celica: S53 came mostly in the ST162 chassis with the 3sfe or 3sge motor. I think it also came in the 2se motor as well. S54 was in the 5th and 6th gens with the 5sfe motor (1990-1999) You can find a s54 from a MR2, but you'll need to convert it from RWD to RWD (like I've done with my e153 mr2 transmission). It would be from a mr2 with the 5sfe motor (mostly SW20/SW21 chassis if I remember right). This is all just from memory, I hope its right :p

Not necessarily. I can't remember if the 6th gen has the 5sfe in it. I know they came with the 7afe. I think only the 94-97 models (GTS?) came with the 5sfe which would put it with the S54. Just because it's the 'newest' one doesn't mean it's the best. If you're looking for just reliable, get another S53 or s54, rebuild it and call it a day. You can also rock the e153, but to do that you need some hybrid axles (mr2/celica combo) and convert the transmission from RWD to FWD (really not that hard, just time consuming and you need to source the right parts).

99s had the 5s as well but mostly auto i Think.. Rebuild, I never done drivetrain work myself, I wonder what the would run.

    S53: ST162 GT (3S-FE), ST162 GT-S (3S-GE/starter on engine side/smaller flywheel than the others)S54: ST182 GT/GT-S (5S-FE/starter on trans side), ST202 GT/GT-S (5S-FE), SW20 MR2 (5S-FE/selector switch needs mods), XV10 Camry (5S-FE)E153: SW20 MR2 (3S-GTE/selector switch needs mods/needs hybrid axles), XV10 Camry 93-97 (1MZ-FE V6/needs hybrid axles)S51: not sure which year camry it came from/not sure about starter location/taller 5th gear 60mph @ 2400rpm/hard to find)Best consensus over the MR2 forums is to use an S54 with S51 5th gear. Great acceleration + great cruising 5th gear rpm's.

Rebuilding a 5speed transmission is much easier than rebuilding an automatic (unless it's an early american automatic, those are just as easy as a manual). In less than an hour I had my 3153 dropped, stripped down and repaired. It took another 3 weeks to get it put back in the car.

Really no way!! 1hr, I guess once youve done it , its not hard at all. Man I wish you were closer, Dosent it require micrometers and such since its precision, . You near san francisco? I would almost drive up there, if you could help me rebuild a s53 . What do parts cost to rebuild them.

I have a chance tomorrow to buy a st202 red top beams 3sge trans for $200. will that work? im assuming 3sge flywheel and pressure plate and idk about the clutch or axles, since I have a automatic,,,,,

To swap to a manual from an automatic you'll need: Clutch pedal assembly. Shifter assembly for a st162 manual transmission Center console for the above shift cables to match the above (at this point I'd recommend to upgrade the shift cable bushings to brass or aluminum) Firewall metal cover and grommet for the cables above Front and rear motor mounts for the a manual transmission Front and rear motor mount brackets for a manual transmission Clutch slave cylinder for a st162 Hydraulic lines for the st162 Clutch master cylinder for a st162 Throwout bearing / manual transmission flywheel / clutch pressure plate / clutch disc All associated hardware for above. CV axles for the manual (maybe) new hubs to accommodate the new cv axles (but I think the splines should still line up for the hub, it may just be the transmission side that doesn't match between the auto and manual setup). Now on top of all that you'll need to buy accordingly. You need to make sure (if needed) the axles you buy will work with the ST202 transmission. As far as your clutch setup that's another story. You'll need a manual transmission flywheel and a matched pressure plate; in your case buy it for a ST162 3SGE. Now your clutch disc and throw out bearing you'll need to buy to match the transmission. Seeing however that it's from a later gen 3sge (and this is pure speculation here) you should be able to just use a clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and flywheel from a ST162 equipped with a 3SGE and manual transmission. THEN on top of that, you'll need to swap out your ECU for a ST162 equipped with a manual transmission :) Otherwise you'll never be able to start the car unless you mess with the wiring. You can't start an automatic unless its in neutral or park. With you swapping over to a manual, the ECU can't tell what gear the motor is in because the sensor is no longer connected. (I have one of these available, it's from a '89GTS)

no! flywheel is smaller for a st162 1st gen 3s-ge compared with any other motor mated to S transmission! you need to get the bigger 3s-fe/3s-gte/5s-fe flywheel.
also, you can swap clutch/pressure plate between either flywheel, but the pressure plate needs to match with the release bearing, and the release bearing needs to match with the fork.

Im a little lost here, just for clarification, I cant use the redtop beams flywheel with the first gen 3sge? and since I have the beams fork Ill need the beams pressure plate and release bearing.
and Ill need to use the 3s-fe/3s-gte/5s-fe flywheel??

but since Im not changing the motor only the tranny, Ill just needa 1st gen 3sge flywheel, and beams p.plate, clutch, bearing, to match the fork?

If the clutch kit for the beams engine is exactly the same as the 5SFE I'm thinking the flywheel would be the same too. which should work?

    - you can't use the 1st gen GE flywheel.
    - you can't use the 1st gen GE trans starter (the one that goes under the exhaust manifold)
    - you can use 2nd/3rd/beams 3s-ge/3s-fe/3s-gte/5s-fe flywheel; all are the same size flywheel
    - you can use 2nd/3rd/beams 3s-ge/3s-fe/3s-gte/5s-fe/1mz-fe/3mz-fe starter
    - pressure plate/clutch is the same dimensions, however some people say that the 3s-gte clutch is stronger...which i don't doubt.
    - whichever bearing you get, you just need to match it with whichever fork works, whether that's the original trans' fork or the new beams trans fork.

Just on thing I would like to know is I now have a 3sgte gen2 st185 225hp motor that I am putting together but for the gearbox thing I can not use the starter under the exhaust anymore I will have to mod it to fit on the other side but still want to use same gearbox and starter as anyone done this before? and how please or what other option's are there? thanks in advance

drill a hole on the other side of the transmission's starter location. be careful as some have turned the shape of the starter hole into an oval trying to create it, hindering the the hole useless. i hope someone else can chime in on this.
for the 3s-gte motor, you want to have longer gears anyways, so perhaps finding a st202 trans + s51 camry 5th gear may be better for you? i imagine with the short-geared s53 you'd just spin your tires all the way to 3rd gear.
