Why you shouldn't cheap out on couplers

I didn't know the throttle body on the st215 was a 3" (I thought it was 2.5"). I ordered all the 2.5" couplers I needed for the intercooler system.

Lo and behold I needed 3" to 2.5" coupler to connect everything. So before I ran it I ran to autozone and bought a Spectre unit.

It worked. I had no problem with the initial driving and what not. I figured it'd work. Then I started pushing it and seeing what the car could do. I soon discovered anything over 10lb of boost it would pop the coupler off either the charge pipe or the throttle body (yes they both have beads on them).

I tried new clamps, hair spray, increasing the bead size, etc. Finally it seemed to hold. I was able to get a constant 13lb boost out of it. Well today driving home I gunned it and gave it some more boost. During a second to third shift I heard a gunshot and I lost all boost. I figured the coupler blew off again.

I get home, open the hood and see this.

I bought another Spectre 3" to 2.5" coupler. I'm only gonna use this one until the unit I ordered from SIS arrives then I'll return it. It seemed like when the motor was cold or it was cool outside it'd work just fine. Get any heat though and it turned to putty.

ouch, yeah spectre stuff is sometimes garbages, their filters are junk, their couplers are junk for boost and their fuel pressure regulators are the worst thing you can put on a vehicle, some of their dress up stuff is alright though. I bought a MAF adapter for my 2010 corolla so i could make a cold air intake for it and it said the adapter would fir the 2010 MAF and it doesnt work at all. It leaves a 1/8 in gap around the sensor because the hole is to big and when i modified it to fit it didnt matter because it doesnt allow the sensor to sit deep enough into the pipe to get a proper reading. So now i have to buy a $200-$300 intake for my corolla.

tim, you should well know by now that 99% of the stuff in parts stores does not work for you, or me, or most 3sgte owners.

Yeah I know. It was a last minute part I forgot to order online. The one I have seems to be holding now though. I've hit 15lbs with it and it hasn't popped yet. The AIT sensor is another story though...thing doesn't stay in place lol.
