So as I think about painting my celica, I realise that the wrekcers here sell panels cheap. I want to change the colour of my 162 to white. SO I could get from the wreckers: 2 Doors 2 Front quarters Both bumpers Bonnet Hatch Even fuel lid My question is, how hard to change are the panels? With this done, which I could probably get them for 400 dollars, I could spend maybe another 500-600 to get the roof and rear quarters done in a shop, leaving me with a cheaper factory quality job..
yup its all pretty straightforward. Just make sure the fender is off before you try to put the door on. Its a real pita if not
Clever way to do a colour change. I never thought about doing it like that. You should take some pics of the transition. Your 162 looks great in blue, why do you want to go to white?
The Blue is a little screwed up in places, previous owner did some weird shit. As for the white, I just love the look of the 162 in white, although everytime I see my sig photo....I love the Blue! Looks good in the sunlight when it sparkles, but the colour looks like shit most of the time. As for Rust Youds, what rust? They dont really rust over here. The panel swapping is no doubt quicker and easier than painting, and its alot cheaper. Estimate 200 dollars a panel for a shop to paint. I can get the doors for 50 each, bonnet and hatch well under 150 combined, bumpers well under 100, and same for the quarters. Could even grab the fuel lid for probably 5 dollars.
The only issue i see is paint colour matching, but if a paint shop does it it should be ok. You'll probably need a friend to help with the hood (bonnet), hatch, and doors. The hood and hatch are really awkward, while the doors are fairly heavy to hold and bolt on at the same time.
it will never be as good as painting them all new again. but for what its worth i guess it could be ok just swapping the panels over... at least the white panels you get wont really be faded as white doesnt fade very much. might be a little discoloured. make sure they aren't damaged or filled with filler shite... other than that it will prob turn out ok
Yea thats the only thing. Just went outside and saw the blue again. MMMMMM. So tempted to try Jaydees spray can idea. Might have to haha.
I bought a bonnet, hatch, 2 doors and front bar for $20 lol. If your confident enough with spray cans, do it.
Damnit man. I cant even find panels the same colour as mine! Seen one in real life, and two on the net lol...
i work at a panel shop and spend most of my time stripping and assemblings cars, panels are a pieace of piss to swap over however getting them to line up properly can at times make u go crazy, expecially if your dealing with second hand parts that can have miniscule imperfections. Also for the color if your gonna do it id try and get the same panels from the same car its amazing the color differences from car to car even stock ones. if you are willing to spend effort and money to get roof and things painted you may aswell jst rub back all your panels and get a professional to put a quick quote of original color over the whole thing would look awesome and shouldnt be to expensive
Might just grab a few cans of the right colour, some primer filler and clear, some sandpaper and polish, and rub back the roof and pillars and have a go!
Do it right and do it once. Why bother tring to get a body shop to match the 20 year old white with fresh white? I can understand the money savings, but you could buy your own paint, gun and spray it yourself (learning experience) for half the cost without buying a bunch of extra parts.
Good point. There is a compressor at home. But would a cheap spray gun be enough? Iv never sprayed anything at all, all I get told is "its alot of work, hard work, blah blah blah". This gets me thinking, Ilprobably just fuck it up and waste all the cash!
all you need to do is prep the car properly, you do that and the rest should just flow any imperfections are easily taken out by fine snading and buffing go for it!
I say have a crack at the DIY, I've got a spare hood at home that I'm going to try and respray so i can practice before attempting to do the whole car, once i get the cash for the tools and materials that is, still a few weeks off at this rate but Mine really needs a freshen up, especially after the previous owners very poor attempt on the rear wing, it's not even the right shade of red! Lemme know what, if any, troubles you run in to k Also....i like your color Blue, white is a bastard to keep clean, that's the main thing i hate about my Rolla, too freaking hard with people building a new house around me every week
Hmmm, this thread is making me want to respray my car myself... something i never thought i'd feel confident enough to do.
