i am looking at buying this reconditioned gearbox but the bellhousing has me stumped. To me it looks like its an s53 g/box with a different bellhousing, possibly from a 4a? anyone kno if they are interchangeable? What i need to kno is what the actual box is. if its a simple case of a direct swap of the bellhousings then thats easy. thanks guys
Short answer - NO Will be cheaper, easier, & quicker to source one from a ST182, ST202 Can you crack open the end cover and show us a pic, better still count the teeth on those 2 exposed gears. Long answer - Looks like an "S" box, possibly 7A-FE? You can't just swap bellhousings, there are a multitude of spacers and adjustments to be done. If it was dirt cheap, Id strip it for spares but you'll need to open your box anyways, so it may be cheaper to buy new selectors and syncros for your box. I find the big problem for us is the needle roller bearings wearing out, once that happens the gears "flop" around and the syncros get chewed up. If you stripped both boxes and used only the best parts, ie swapping bearings, syncros, selectors etc it may be possible to build one decent box but everything will need to be sized and built according to ther BGB. Unfotunately Toyota used different sized syncros and rings on different gears so unlike other boxes you can't use 5th gear stuff on 2nd gear etc The 1st/2nd gear selector ring includes the reverse engagement gear It is possible to re-build a box at home but you'd need: A BGB Various pullers Micrometer Feeler gauges A press Dial gauges Boxes are tricky, the slightest error could cause the box to lock up and write off the car. Don't attempt it without expert help and advice. Don't attempt to re-use worn parts Further reading - http://st162.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=101&t=6934&p=90228#p90228
