Anyone knows the correct dimensions & speaker capacity? Is there a passive speaker on driver's side? What speakers will fit as a replacement without too much of a hassle? Trying to keep original as much as possible.

4" will fit in the front and 4" will fit the rear pods but there will be a gap.. so i used 5 1/4" in with the help of a dremel :naughty

original sizes are 3.5" in the fronts, 4" in the rear.

you'd be surprised how good the stock boxes work without going for a bigger size. i went with 2-way speakers for both the front and back, took my time installing them, making sure that the gaskets sealed everything perfectly. when you have it done, the range of sound and clarity is ridiculous. not to mention that the stock set-up alone already vibrate the floorpan without distortion. that's with the subwoofer turned off!

front specific: took out the reflex cover in the front housing and made a new gasket for it.
rear specific: going from original speakers in the rear to today's aftermarket stuff is going to leave a gap as the shape is different. so i used some windshield wiper fluid hoses to make a gasket for the gap.

One eBay member from the UK who dismantled his Celica ST162 measured speakers from screw hole to screw hole they ALL measure 4.5 inches. I suppose UK ST162 has a different spec (thinking no passive speaker either). I wonder where will I get 4.5" speakers. Don't want to go 4" 'cos the technicians will never bother to cover the gap between speaker and box.

the driver's side speaker cover is screwed in by one screw on the bottom of the cover, then you just pull it off.
should look like the speaker to the left of this picture (courtesy of dave)

the front reflex cover is 4", the speaker itself is 3.5".

you don't measure from screw hole to screw hole. iirc it's the actual diameter of the speaker. i'll take pics of mine in a bit
