Yea they can be replaced, and it's pretty easy, if you've ever set your toe, then your half way there. The first thing I suggest is marking the location of the capture nut to the tierod before loosening anything. Basicly you have to remove the tierod end from the hub, some have cotter pins, some just nylon lock nuts, but either way they need to be taken loose first. Usually a couple raps with a hammer at the point where the rod end attaches to the hub will break it free, but a pickle fork may be needed if really stubborn. Once removed from the hub end, you simply loosen the capture nut and just rotate the joint by hand and oh my god it's right there in your hand, waiting to be thrown away, or returned for core charge whichever way you go. If you like,I've got to replace mine pretty soon, so I take pics and include a little write up. racerb
Since you may go through them faster than the rest of us, what do you notice when they are going bad ?
Well..mines bent upward....on the driver's side....it's visibly noticable, and my steering wheel has to be turned 30 degrees clockwise to drive straight, and when the car's parked and you look at the wheels it looks like they're both sticking outward in opposite directions...haha
A good sign, is a ruptured dust boot and zero grease and/or very little grease left. Another sign is when every other part of your steering is working great, there is still extra effort needed to steer the car, along with some clunking and/or gridding in the steering. Actually I have had really good success with tierod ends, if replaced at the beginning of your build, they usually last forever. CV joints are were constant attention is needed, mostly cause of the extra heat and stress of racing. racerb
Hey rye, your going to need more than just a tierod end, your going to need the entire tierod assembly. And yes they can be replaced, you just gotta take the clamp off the inner tierod dust cover and push it back to expose it's attachment point to the rack. After assessing the damages, your local parts house can usually get whatever you need, I know our local Advance Auto Parts lists all the pieces. racerb 8)
Well today when I was servicing a toyota dealership I talked to the parts manager, he was able to get me the outer tie rod end for $20....@ cost! w00t... anywho...I'm picking up the part tommorow then hopefully drop my car off at my buddies garage so he can take a look and see what else it needs....
Hmm...the longest part of the assembly is the bent piece..I can't just replace that eh?? I bought the outer tie rod but I guess I'll need more than that..... boo
what you bought was the outer tie rod end, what you are talking about if the inner tie rod end. 2 peices.
