I was driving to work this morning, didn't see a bump... Hit the bump, and voila, humming sound as I accelerate... . the sound gets louder and louder as I go faster and faster... when I brake, the sound goes away... I'm assuming it is the wheel bearing... Do you recommend replacing the whole hub assembly or just the bearing itself? And if I buy the hub/bearing kit, will the bearing be already in place or do I still need to have it pressed? It looks like that I can DIY the removal of the hub itself, but need the bearings to be pressed which I'm trying to avoid for cost considerations... Price wise, the hub/bearing kit as not so much than just buying the bearings itself... And, what are the safety risk if I continue to drive the car for at least maybe until the weekend? day by day, it seems that there is something new about the car.... Thanks!
Sounds like a bearing but the way you check is jack up the car on the side you hear it on and try to shake the tire by holding between 12 and 6 then 9 and 3 to see if there's any movement your bearing is going out. When it comes to cost a bearing cost about 12 bucks including purchasing the seal but on the cost of labor you can do 80% of the job on your own except for pressing in the bearing, you will need a shop for that. If you can hold out for alittle while ill do a quick write up so you can see the process cause my driver side bearing is going and needs to be replaced. Btw I suggest you do both side since the car is out of service already and will save you time later "trust me" I was to lazy and cheap to do the other side now I have to put my DD out of service again
I'm in the same boat... this is my DD so I will need to get it done as soon as possible... i'm looking at maybe this weekend if not next... im just worried that it may break loose or seize, but hopefully not... i called around and only found one shop that would press the bearings for me at a cost of $50/side... pretty side IMHO... i saw on youtube this toll called hub tamer... im hoping advanceauto has it for loaner... i'm trying to search if there's already an assembly where the hub and bearing is already pressed together... so all i need is to pull and replace...
I've driven my Trac with a bad wheel bearing for about a month but don't challenge your luck with mine. I honestly say be quick about it or the bearing will wear out the hub it sits on which is what happened to me to the point I had to replace it
Depending on how long/much you drive on it you could cause other damage to the hub or knuckle. My driver side was giving me problems a while back. I pulled both hubs, sent them out and had new bearings pressed in. Now, my passenger side axle broke. The bearing is absolutely destroyed (along with much of the hub and spindle I'm sure). I'm going to pull some junkyard knuckles and call it a day.
i just had the both axles replaced a few months..if i'd known i should have replaced pretty much all suspension components together when i had the tranny replaced... pretty much my whole front suspension is new... ball joints, tie rod, etc.. even rack and pinion, axles and ps pump are new... who would have thought not to replace this hub bearing... me!??! and the thing is, when i lowered my car 4-6 weeks ago, i should have expected this... grr!!!
yeah i week into my lowing job i blew the drivers side bearing, it was already making a lil noise but no play.......just bearing for me.
mine only has the noise... no play yet.. at least when im driving... but i need to jack it up to make sure... has anyone able to re-seat the bearing without having to take it to a shop to be pressed in? maybe a home-made press? i can borrow a puller for free from advanceauto but they said they do not have a press.... which made me think... if it is a puller, can i just reverse it so instead of pulling the bearing out, it is actually pulling it in? i cannot justify giving a shop 50-70bux for a simple job like this...
i paid 180 when it finally blew up....its faster and easier if you dont have the correct tools to pay the cash, get it fixed the right way the first time. and yes i was lucky i didnt destroy my hub, i drove for months before replacing it due to i didnt know it was a wheel bearing due to there being no play.
where i live, the cheapest they would charge for the whole job was $370, parts and labor... if i take the hub out myself, only one shop will press in the bearing for me and they want $50 per side... so basically im looking at a $100 just to get it pressed... i think harbor freight sells a tool for much less... http://www.harborfreight.com/10-piece-bearing-race-and-seal-driver-set-95853.html http://www.harborfreight.com/fwd-front-wheel-bearing-adapters-66829.html any thoughts?
The first tool set is a seal driver. This is useful for when replacing rubber seals (transmission axle seals, etc). The 2nd one would be your bearing press/puller. Myself, I'm just going to go get a set of junkyard hubs. If they feel smooth with no play, I'm going to install them. If they have some problems I'll swap them out with some OEM bearings. That's one thing you should do though, OEM bearings from Toyota.
found these from scouring the net... im pretty itchy to do it right away... http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2685054
if you have a bottle jack you have a hydraulic press you just need to make a frame for it to start you need to remove the hub from the knuckle. the hub will come off with 1 of the inner races of the old bearing. Manual says you can use a puller to get the old inner race off the hub. None of my pullers can get a good enough grip on the race so I carefully grind it along the red line until I have almost cut through it then it normally falls of by itself On the knuckle side you need to remove the dust shield and a "C" clip then you can press out the old bearing Now you need to press the new bearing in, press on the outer race the old bearings outer race works well to drive the new dust shield into place, install the "C" clip first now you need to press the hub into the new bearing, in my case the previous owner had put a new bearing on a hub that was @!#$@ so I had a spare ABS hub that I'm substituting If you have the big metal dust shield install it before you install the hub, I don't have the shield anymore when your pressing the hub into the new bearing make sure your pressing down on the inner race of the new bearing and not the outer race. If you press down on the outer race you are putting force on the new bearings and the machined surface the travel on potentially damaging the ball bearings and/or the machined surface. put everything back together I will check to see if I have the heater control unit. when I get more time I will try to explain the electrical diagram to you
WOW!!! GENIUS!!! I didn't think of that!!! you are exactly correct... technically they are "hydraulic" jacks... I'm really looking forward to that diagram... I will also try to study the diagram I got and hopefully put some sense into it... right now, this bearing is far more important... Thanks for all the help!
Whew!!! Thank God for giving me another life!!! Stupid, stupid, stupid, me... It was not the wheel bearing after all!!!! Never did it crossed my mind that the problem was..... loose lug nuts.... !!!!! To think of it, this experience was pretty scary personally... I'm just thankful that nothing happened to me, nor anybody around me on the road... Thanks to all who chimed in!!! At least now when I legitimately need to do my wheel bearings, I have tons of background knowledge!!! On to the A/C quest... BTW, not only did I found the A/C diagram, I also ran into the whole wiring diagram for the car...
done this before, not with lug nuts but axle bolts....lol after spending 400 on new axles is a hard lesson.
