well my car starts on and off....when it does it fires up awesome..solenoid is part of the starter on these cars right?
I went and redid all my battery connections, cut down the wire to the starter to where it was uncorroded and put a new terminal on it...my batter looks like sex right now.used a whole roll of electrical tape...

    so questions...

can the relay go bad, is it worth switching in a new one?
is there anyway to do the starter or even get to the terminals without taking off the whole front exhaust system...started doing that yesterday and one of the nuts on the mani is pretty stuck/stripped. what are my options? I am gonna go look at cars today heh

I've never heard of the relay fix going bad but I guess it could happen...?

You don't need to take the exhaust off to remove the starter on the 3SGE. You can just remove it through the oil filter side - it's tight, but it comes out.

ignition could be knackered?? it mightent be twisting the inside fully?

reaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllly.....well fuck my life haha need to change my damn oil filter anyway...how many bolts are there and where at? well a relay would either be good or bad right? so i dont think its that...but i can at least take the starter/solenoid out and make sure the wiring is done nice.... or test the starter :D thanks for the help...site never lets me down

2 bolts connect the starter to the tranny case. If your in front of the car their
to the right of the starter, should be 14mm. 1 bolt connects the + battery
cable to the solenoid I'm guessing its 12mm. 1 plug connects the wire from the
relay to the solenoid. If I remember correctly you don't need to remove the oil
filter but you may need to remove the heatshield from the starter, 10mm bolt.

Wrong. Why do you think we did the relay mod ? Because the original relay
    becomes intermittent.

The third option is that your relay is good your starter is good but your solenoid
has become intermitent. When you remove the starter/solenoid unit you will
see a fat wire going from the solenoid to the starter that is still connected(if
you did things right). The solenoid actually has 2 functions, 1) its engages the
starter gear with the engine 2) it sends the power from the + battery wire
(that you previously disconected) to the other big wire that is still connected
so the starter motor gets power. This contact point in the solenoid is
subjected to a lot of current, so much current that every time you start your
car a spark will arc between the 2 contacts. This spark is hot enough to melt
a little bit of metal of the contact. This is commonly refered to as pitting of
the contacts. You may have to clean the contact points. Some sandpaper or
    a fine file would work.

It is also possible that dirt has gotten into the contacts again requiring cleaning
of the contacts although in this case some paper towel or a brush might wipe
    the dirt away.

*And make sure you disconnect your battery before doing any work. Be safe :)

Yes the relays tend to out- very seldom though..
For me i ran a starter button so I wouldnt have to deal with the whole relay issue- Im very satisfied with a straight hard wired push button start!
You should try it before messing around with the relay mod again IMO

I found my starter pics so in case you want to tear your solenoid appart here they are

The part circled in red is te solenoid plunger
    [IMG]

You want to clean the area outlined in red on the solenoid plunger
    [IMG]

The part outlined in red in the above pic makes contact with these 2 copper bars. I bar is connected to the battery +'ve cable and the other copper bar is connected to the starter motor. You want to make sure these 2 bars are nice and clean also. You can easily see in the picture how much pitting has occured on these 2 bars.

why thanks team...turns out i hit the starter with a hammer/wrench and its been fine for about 7 straight starts...all fixed ;) but ill be taking it out soon to make sure all is in order... and so i can redo the whole starter wire from the battery etc (mine is wrecked bad

i was always under the impression that the starter mod was done because the signal coming through the existing wire is often dulled by corrosion in the original wire etc... either way i still live by it haha

yep, you need to rebuild your starter or replace it.
