st165 metal overflow tank....

    found this on alltrac.net ...

On the 165, if you have the recall that fitted a metal radiator expansion tank, with the tiny plastic overflow tank on the side, then the radiator cap arrangement changed. The metal expansion tank should be at full cooling system pressure at all times, hence it being metal rather than plastic. So the radiator has a plain cap with no pressure relief, then the pressure relief cap goes on the metal expansion tank. When you buy a new 165 radiator from Toyota (if they're even still available) it includes a plain cap (not pressure relief) already chained to the radiator neck.

That said, a lot of people haven't had any troubles running a pressure relief cap on the 165 radiator. I don't know what troubles Toyota ran into that led to the recall and cooling system change but it was a safety recall. So I figured I'd run mine the way Toyota wanted it set after the recall.

BTW safety recalls don't expire, so if you have a 165 without the recall fitted, you can contact your Toyota dealer to get it taken care of. Besides the expansion/overflow tank change, you get a new radiator, too! :D Although I don't know what they'll do if the radiator isn't available anymore.

I run the high pressure caps on both radiator and overflow tank... I do have an issue that on pressure my car is leaking some coolant... could it be related that the pressure has to be in the overflow tank instead of the radiator?? Who knows??

on a side note...why the hell does the IC have a pressurized cap?? there is hardly pressure on it as the pump isn't that strong at all.

got a pic? ive never seen a metal overflow tank for an st16x. must not have been a worldwide recall?

it's only on the st165. see my post in oompa's topic.

i've not seen it on any st165 that has been imported to aus either. was the recall for all in japan as well?

wonder how it goes for taking a grey import to your local dealer for "safety recall" purposes.....

i'll go find out i guess. should be good for a luagh if nothing else.

they were recalled because of the turbo coolant return line. the turbos were too hot and putting air into the coolant system by boiling the coolant.
what toyota did was put the blank on the radiator because the stock fiber tank radiator could not have a higher pressure cap. hence the metal expansion tank with the pressure cap on it. the intercooler has a pressure cap to raise the boiling point of the fluid in the intercooler.
i've even setup my car to use an expansion tank. my radiator has a dummy cap and i have a remote mounted expansion tank (mounted in the lower right fender, where the intake elbow normally is). using these setups you can mount the tank anywhere as long as:
the connection to the radiator is at the highest point
the connection to the expansion tank is at the lowest point

    ie..
the line at the radiator comes off at the overflow point, routes to the expansion tank, enters the expansion tank at the very bottom.

what this allows you to do is bleed the coolant system normally at the radiator while not having to worry about mounting the cap at the highest point in the car (which on the 165 setup is actually the upper coolant hose)

So if I understand correctly I have to take my high pressure cap of the radiator in order to let the system function at best?

I use my old ST162 radiator and have a T-piece for the turbo cooling hose.

I even use higher than standard pressure caps.... maybe I put too much pressure on the system??

I remember reading that as well and changing caps. Good explanation fellas, thanks

roy, i'd get the asi rad if i were you. the 162 rad is a single core, while the 165 is 2. i know its working now but on a hot day i don't know how long it will last.

so... a mod for the list to add :).

I heard ST205 alu rad's being modified for the 4th gen?

yes i have one in mine. but it's more like modify the core support to fit the rad. you'll also need the aluminum crossmember mounts if you use the 205 rad. i literally have about 2mm clearence to the engine crossmember. i fear that thing moving and damaging the rad. i guess in your case which ever is most cost effective for you.

anyone know if toyota can still fix this?

while the recall may never expire...
car manufacturers are only required to make parts for that vehicle for 10 years. you can try but i seriously doubt they will do a damn thing.
