So guys I was thinking, if there's anyone out there that know, it would be nice to put together a list of true legitimate short shifters, the years they fit, the years they can fit, and cars they can fit. For example if one for a st165 fits a st162, or even if it fits other Gens. Doing this for others and myself. I have done a lot of searching and there really isn't much info on it. As far as I've found, they don't make them for the 162, but there are some that fit. And IM sure there are others that would like to know.

I believe there was no modification, use enough lubricant.

Maybe a little minor adjustments but nothing you can't handle.

I have this in my ST162 also. If I remember correctly, you just need to add a couple washers to the metal base to raise it, or bang down the body. This is to allow enough room for the cup on the bottom of the shifter to move easily.

Awesome. Yeah I think I've actually heard exactly that once before.

I have the TWM short shifter in my GTS project car, all I had to do to mine was cut out about a 3/4" section from the bottom base plate. If you check my build thread in the Motorsports section of this forum there are a few pictures of the shifter and the base plate modifications.

I thought the pics were in my build thread, but could not find them myself, so I'm adding a few of the shifter cage base mods that I made.......

Sorry about the huge size of my pics, but they show the only true mod the short shifter I used in my GTS, which was to trim the base plate for lower shifter clearance.

How about the newer ones like say from 90's? Because the newer ones are cheaper

I've got a shifter assembly from a '92, it's totally different and even has an aluminum case around the shifter ball. I got it from a salvage yard just to try it in my car, I liked it because the shifter arm is bent back more toward the driver. The other problem was with the base plate, only one of the mounting holes actually lined up on the exhaust tunnel. I'll take a picture of the difference between the 2 and post them up later.

Oh so you have that entire bracket. doesn't that screw with your shifting? As far as because it's different lengths and all?

the st185 shifters are horrible, people fit the st165 ones into them to improve the throw. IIRC i compared the st204 to the st165 and the pivot length was the same , just a shorter handle and with a dog leg in it. i have pics comparing the std 185/204
