I know this has probably been said a million times throughout the forum. Sorry for the repeat..

I am just wanting to know what will fit and what I should be looking for brand-wise and also probably the configuration of the short shift as well. Also what suites the ST162 best, I remember reading somewhere that the ST165 will fit in the St162 but is that exactly true, or is there a conversion which you have to do? I have also found the .pdf file for the installation of the TWM Performance Short Shift. But would like a bit of assistance with what my options are.

    Thanks again! :D

Somewhere in Stig's thread on his car TEMS, he has a very informative discussion and pictures on this... May take some time, but if he sees this, He'll put a link up to that part of the thread for you !!!

Here's the blip from my project thread on C-Tech. I'm using the ST165 TWM short throw shifter.

I used the TWM kit on my '89 GT-S, and I used new stock GT-S cables.

How is it too much work?

When compared to what you're doing, it's less work. Still have to remove the center console, unbolt the shifter and remove the retaining clips. The only difference is besides sawing and cutting the shift lever, you bolt in the new one. Plus the angles are already correct for the throw so you don't need to worry about fubaring those up.

you don't need to remove anything use a cutting disk on a grinder 2 minutes done lol

except its not a true short shifter
you are making how far your hand needs to travel less. but the actual throw on the shifter cables is the same

The 162 shifter is shorter than a 165, just use a 162 shifter in your 165

Still haven't tested those from the 182/5, 202/5 yet

I test fitted a MRS shifter - the balls & cups are too small

Cutting the lever down is a quick way, proper way is to lengthen the
part under the ball and raise the holder from the floor.

Yer, my gear stick was shorten by probably hack-sawing through it. The only reason why I say this, was it isn't a neat cut. It really recked it because the only sort of shift knobs I can get are the crappy 3 bolt clamp configuration which over time becomes loose and basically moves around on the stick. I really wish they left it and kept the original. But not much I can do with it now except to try and fix it.

My younger brother has a st162 as well with the original gear shift setup, but its pretty high. hahaha when I jumped in his ages ago, after having fake short shift in mine, it was a pretty big adjustment to get used to, as well as the gears having a bigger gap to complete the gear change..

Me too had a 3 bolt momo shift knob before, then I changed to this TRD one:

Big improvement compared to the momo, sits way lower and feels much direct, but not too low so it's comfy as well. I think you should try something similar before you start sawing your car :) Especially if you want to get rid of your current 3 bolt knob anyways.
