Hi Sean, good to see your enthusiasm is still all there.I know what the weather can do to a car like ours,so its great that you have that shed to work in,im very jealous as i had to do mine on my drive! :banghead .If you can do a full strip then all the better, you're going to know every inch of that car is good once its done.If not then you can do what i did and go from back to front cleaning off the surface crap and then either Hammerite or Frosts POR-15,and underbody seal with Waxoyl that i used ,about 50 million tins will do it.Obviously any major bits youll have to cut and replace as required.Get in there fella.!

The sherv is your man re rust proofing. Only suggestion to add is get a easy out set as plenty of bolts can snap etc underneath.

Re: seank90, the bastard child is home

Hi! thanks, whats the best way to start from back to front, i dont have that much room but im thinking about stripping the wings off and bonnets and everything in teh engine bay and doing thats first and get under the wings and what not covered in rust convertor and then primed and painted black and the engine bay then red .... and go from there...

whats the best starting point?? im still knocking around, i want to have a meet up with all of you guys in the UK and meet you all, i was so annoyed i couldnt go the last two years so im making it my mission! :D

Rich, what easy out set would be the best, id like to replace all the boths with stainless steel ones aswell if possible, the ones that arent showing of course!

Re: seank90, the bastard child is home

I would as you say start at the front, as it gets worse as you work back tbh.
Get the wings off, get it up high in the air, get the bumper off too. gives you tones of access then.
I would see if you can drop the struts, and get right in to the turrets too.
I would have a good look at the crossmembers for damage.
round the base of the rad can attract lots of surface rust, too.
look out for surface rust round the pipes as they come into the bay too.

moving back, look for rust damage on the floor pan, sills, drainage points. remember the floor is double skined, get the interior out of it, so you can go from both top and bottom. look into the base of the A pillars, rot can get in from sunroof and screens.

behind the doors, you will see the inner arches, get into there best you can, and then get ready for the rear set up.
lots of rot traps round the fuel tank and suspension, strip as much as you can off and get in there.
When I did trinity, I used quality wire brushes for the drill and got every bit of surface rust outta there.

Re the easy outs, I have a cheapish bosch set, tbh there are much of a muchness. Re stainless bolts, here is a tip. Go to your local plumbing supplier with examples of the nuts and bolts you will need, for obvious reasons they stock lots of stainless and very cheap prices normally.

Def want to meet up mate sometime, next years gen show, which will feature an overnighter at a camp site maybe?

You must get good eye protection fella, lots of shit comes off the underneath, car creaper is very useful, and the highest safest axle stands you got, a Euroland tarp is a great way to protect the floor of your garage too.

Also heat helps to melt waxoil and similar so I used the use an old air heater to warm the tins as I dont have hot water in the garage.

Treat the rust too, before covering it up, otherwise you seal in the rust from the elements with a underseal and it attacts your metal work unknown to you.

    hth.

Re: seank90, the bastard child is home

i think im going to strip the enigne and all accessories out of the engine bay and try and clean that up and spray it myself, the one part i can actually spray without it being too crappy looking when you open the bonnet, the outside ill leave to a pro! i plan on using the rustconvertor on everything from that link you sent me! seems like good stuff, and primingover it and then spraying the parts which are rusting. so next saturday ill strip off the wings and see what condition likfe is like under the front wheel arches ,

would a heat gun do anygood to take the sealant off the arches?

i plan on stich welding the front end... ive done this on a twin cam already so i know the ins ond outs of it... if im going into this much detail why not... it just means the suspension will be able to do its job... ill put a non porus primer on over the rust convertor and then spray it with the waxoil all under the car... i know i have a few places to patch up on the sills but that doesnt worry me too much because the kit will cover most for me.

Will a cheap ebay set do for the easy outs? that was my plan regarding the stainless bolts... i was thinking that allen heads down along the wings would look nice thou... kinda make it look different and stand out with the silver :D

That sounds like a plan for next year! i hope i can get teh car somewhat done before then....

I can imagine the crap that will fall off my car... im going to try and get massive jack stands if not ill make some big bad ass ones using pipes... i made a full set that got the car 2 foot off the ground and they got swiped.... so ill make some more, there so handy to have. thanks for all these tips guys, keep um coming... I never knew abotu rust convertor and i always had to cut and replace before!

Re: seank90, the bastard child is home

let me just start off by saying... HOW MANY BOLTS HOLD ON THE GOD DAM WING?!
it seems you have to remove averything to just take off the front wing... including the bumper.
so, i have started working on it and to my surprise it actually wasnt that bad rust wise at all! most of it was surface rust and i did manage to sheer almost every single bolt i touched... ah well, i wanted to put all new bolts in anyway to no harm done

i did a bit more cleaning so id have some extra room to work around.

The first thing to do was to make tea... and then it was time to take off the wheel.
so i jacked it up and put a stand underneath it and pulled off the wheel... didnt need to open the nuts becasue im just that strong.

having a look at the wing i dont know what to do really , new wing or repair... its rusted at the front also...

but anyway, i then took off the splashguard over the wheel thinking the whole chassis would fall apart with rust and i was really quiet shocked with what i saw... it was dry and rust free, apart from a small bit of surface rust...

so i continued to remove some bolts, such as the mudguard...

and then i had to remove the indicator lamp to access some more bolts behind it..bumper has seen better days.

now the grill after i realised the bumper has to come off also...

and now we can see the lovely hidden bolt behind the bumper.

there was also two bolts behind the indicator which have to be removed...

and i had trouble with one bolt thta just seemed to spinn endlessly so i cut it off with the chisel... ill have to fix that later on...

and boom! wing is off, not that bad at all after i looked behind it... all the rust is surface and there is no real dents or sign of a crash.

and i do remember jon having trouble with the water run off for the windsheild, and what do you know, i had that too... full of crap it was. but luckily it wasnt rusted underneath it so it will be just a quick and easy clean up and prime this wing... i think i might stich weld it all the way around the wings and chassis rails and engine bay.

i broke abotu 12 bolts thou.. but all in easy to get places, so i bought a set of easy outs, rich said it to me its a must have celica ownership tool. i can see why.

so hopefully ill get the otherside wing off in a few days and see what its like on that side.

Easy fix boyo, glad you are "back" and have a shed with a heater (lol) & room for my tent.
    Where's the (my) black car?

These covers must come out too
    [IMG]

Overall I must say the car isn't bad - I've had to cut most of the mudflaps off as there was nothing to put a spanner on
and yes rusted bolts are part of the gen4 challenge

the rust isnt bad at all at all.... was expecting so much worse so im thrilled. no need for a tent here, we have a full spare room! big too , the black (you) celica is at my old workplace, the guy who i worked with years ago let me leave it in his yard and strip it slowly so its so handy because i dont have that much room

kev, i live in one of the dampest countries in the world, all you see there is a graze of rust surface rust, not like the cancer rust i see on some of the other cars so im thrilled! alll it will take is a quick pass of the wire brush and vola, gone! then just get some non porus primer and never have to go near it again! :D

it is, but i dont know will i ... or just get a new one... the arches were rolled on it and it was rolled badly... im not worried about the front of the wing becasue the new bumper will cover that so if its ugly it doesnt matter.
