Any thoughts on how much it would run to get this fixed? I do have an access to a reasonably priced mechanic if I decide the work is beyond my scope.

When one says lower bearings, what does it refer to? Is this even worth the time and money given that I am not a car collector at all... I mean I could probably sell my GTS for this...

Right now my GTS is running strong as my daily with the exception of the possibilty of my alternator going bad soon and just some tiny nuisance that I can live with... and I've already done a lot of preventative maintenance plus the tranny change... so I am assuming my current GTS will be troublesome for at least the next 3 years or so... (knock on wood)

That does look nice, may be worth taking your mechanic to check it out, bearings should be a straight forward job.

I am awaiting for a response from the seller... I am not sure if he meant lower engine bearing or rod bearings...

Apparently the body is rust free and the interior is decent for the age... I may need to convince wife first...

I normally find a new designer handbag/shoes does the trick ;)

it should right? since those cost more than the actual car itself... hehe...

nah, i've decided to just keep loving my 162... for the fixes i've done and the good deal I got for it, the car should hold pretty well for number of years... i just need to maintain it right, and hopefully slow down the process of rusting...

after almost a year of doing the roll-on paint job, there are a few spots that are starting to bubble and i may need to address those come summertime...

That is part of the culture of owning our Celicas....RUST :(

Once you start doing more to it, it becomes part of you and you will never ever get rid of it :)

i agree... what really like about our car is that the body line is never tiring to look at... the engine is almost bulletproof... really, all i want is for my car to cosmetically look healthy... i would hate that rust may eventually eat every bit of it...

Now you know why I've owned 5 of them, 3 at this moment and couldn't ever see myself getting rid of them. Parts are getting harder to come by, but still I'm willing to hang on to them and search my butt off for whatever it take to keep them going....

So yay or nay? Can the bottom bearing be done from underneath without taking the engine? If I can get the car for a significantly less amount for what he's asking, around how much more do I need to budget if the problem is "just the bearing" itself?

Mr. Mafix, in your professional judgement, should I even consider this... I wonder if the owner knew anything about the history of the car...

    @Mr. Bob,

How I wish you are within reach... I would love to help and learn from you working with our cars...

It should be the same as changing the oil pan/oil pan gasket. take crossmembers out along with front/rear mounts, take out 11920873912 bolts for the oil pan, a few 10mm bolts for the oil pickup, and you have the rods and bearings in sight.

Sounds doable... I'll see if I can work on the asking price... if not, I'm pretty content with my car right now...

the hardest part will be trying to find out if the crank is damaged. i would plastigauge everything bearing you replace to make sure you are within clearance tolerances according to the BGB. you may need to buy several sized bearings.

my friend with a 3sgte just slapped on a new bearing when he spun his without measuring and he ended up with the same bearing failing after 4 months, causing damage to the crank that required 0.020 under machining to take care of damages. at that point, sourcing a new crank was required with max 0.010 under being taken off for longevity issues, being boosted etc.
