I have had a 1986 Celica GT for about 8 months now (bone stock except for stereo... I know the engine is wimpy) and it has begun to make a rattling noise that only occurs when I am giving it gas and there is a large load on the engine (such as when accelerating or going up a steep hill). It is definitely coming from the engine area of the car, and it seems to have gotten louder, or at least I hear it more often. The more throttle I give it, the worse it sounds. If I accelerate slowly and when it is cruising the noise is not present. Other than the noise the car appears to run perfectly, perhaps a little hesitant on throttle response but that could just be the automatic transmission. My guess is that it has bad motor mounts and the engine is rattling from the vibration when it has a heavy torque load. What do you guys think? Any help is appreciated.
Sounds like a Mount also- Ther is a Mount that is behind the block, and under the firewall- when that Go's it drops the tranny housing on top of the Cradle so when you start the car its sounds like a bunch of hammers hitting metal, and when you accel- it kicks the engine back, then when sowing down it knocks also.
Thanks for the help. I don't hear any noise when I start the car or slow down, so I don't think the trans is out of place... but it sounds like the mounts definitely need replacing. How hard is that to do myself? I've done some work such as replacing the power steering pump, tie rods, and shocks, and body work, but I don't have a pulley to lift up the motor or anything-- my friend said I could do it with a jack from underneath. Do you think that will work?
im in a hurry and dont have time to explain a how to..but yeah it will work.dont kill your oil pan thou:\
I would check the exhaust heat shield down by the flex pipe before you get into motor mounts. Mine was rusted out and a piece of it was loose and rattling on the exhaust
Replacing the rear motor mount is not bad. I think it took me about an hour and required two floor jacks. You will need to support the engine, since you'll have to loosen the primary cross member that runs front to back. The other jack was used to get some extra height so I have better access top everything.
