I've got (at least) leaks in my rack and pinion set-up. Since I'm removing the engine, disassembling the suspension to replace mounts and springs, and overhauling the brakes, I might as well fix/replace the the steering while I've got all that working space. On Rock Auto, I see four different used R&P's available, ranging from about $130 - $200 for the setup. Companies are A-1 Cardone, Mavel, APSCO, and ACDELCO. Of course, if it's just seals (etc) I'll go that route, but if I find worn gears, joints (etc) I'll just swap the entire unit. So, who has experience w/ these after market re-manufactured parts and can recommend one brand over the others, or another brand I should go find? Thanks. On another note, I've been thinking of starting a thread of off-the-shelf products we've tried and like, or tried and want to warn others are a waste of money. If this already exists - my bad. For instance, Sea Foam is the only injector cleaner I've found where I could actually feel (HP) and see (mileage) improvements. All others I've tried (IMO) are worthless. Same w/ degreasers, etc. Any interest?
I use re maned A1-Cardone half shafts from rock auto and am quite impressed with them. And I agree we should have a user recommended products category. I would imagine you just need seals in you R&P. Unless your turning the steering wheel and not getting any response from the tires. These gears are turning at what? maybe 1-5 rpm. Not very much when you consider some engine parts are turning at 4000-7000rpm
