The books say that the 3SGE requires expensive platinum tipped spark plugs and only need replacing every 100,000km.

    Is this essential?

Or can cheaper plugs be used even if they need to be replaced more often, and will they affect engine performance?

    Thanks!

No you can use other plug beside platinum. I was running basic NGK v-powers in my celi and it performed great. Now i am running NGK iridium. You will be fine running basic Spark pluggs.

let me set the record straight for everyone on here on our plugs.

The factory plugs are NGK V-Power copper cores.
if you want to upgrade get NGK loazer plats or denso iridiums.
those are the only plugs i recommend.

Parts stores will sell you what ever they want and tell you it goes in your car. i cannot count how many tune-ups i've had to do because of this.
and one more tip for the record:
the only cars that get a BOSCHE plug are made in germany!
the only cars that take a CHAMPION plugs are made in the usa!

perhaps they are in canada...but down here they are ngk. there might be a slight heat range difference. you can't even get denso copper cores down here.
