Seriously want to do this. Whats the odds of it looking decent? Doesnt have to have a killer reflection, just a reasonably smooth finish thats consistent across the car. I can only really do it with a can, without paying huge amounts, and dont have the space of equipment to do it with a compressor.

White wouldnt be hard to make look good I reckon, never notice alot on white cars. Hides lots of sins, stays good in the Aussie sunlight, and its exactly the colour I want on mine, I had wanted a white one, couoldnt find one...

    Experiences/thoughts anyone?

Was thinking I would bog little dents in it, pull off all the moulding plastics, mirrors, door handles, primer that, get it as smooth as i can then do white, until its well covered, then a few coats of clear and cut it and polish it as usual...

Paint indoors! outside you have no chance of making it look right. Get a good enamel spray paint, about 10 cans, shake the hell out of them, and then when your done shake them somemore. Paint one pannel at a time, and do light coats! Resist the urge to pick off any cat hair that mith land on the car, u can get it off ocne its dryed and a little line look sbetter than my big finger prints! Prep the area well, you can probably get away with scuffing the paint thats there, but if you got an electric sander use it.

You can get the same rust paint as the link above in big spray cans for like 4 dollars, I used both methods and sprayed looks 10000% better. did my seconds hood with it and it looked great, it had a little accident hte other day so Im gonna cut it up into scrap metal to weld onto my car but It looked good for a while.

In the spring Im gonna be spraying my car, using my compressor and gun but Im almost temped to use the cans. Let paint dry for a couple days before you touch it.

take your time, shake well, even thin coats and it should look the part

agreed but make sure u are in a well ventilated area. breathing in too much of that stuff is really bad for your health (thats why pros use the paint booth).

Meph, you really gota get some nice pics of that bonnet up for us!

Hmmmmmmmm. Maybe this could actually turn out decent? After that I would have to do the engine bay, and door jams, wouldnt b so fussy with those though of course

I trye but it was too cold to wash, just came out looking like crap with streaks and frozen water. it had an accident, and it was somewaht folded n half, the paint was a little damaged. I think with a wetsand and buff it would be even sweeter. well if you want to kinda know waht it looked like my mom after seeing my first blac khood paint job said "wow this looks really good" :p I got a ot of pics on car doamin wit my new hood, just look for pics with hood pins and thats the one i sprayed. Just go for it, and follow the tips above, work comes to worse you lose 50 bucks on paint, Im really excited to do mine.

Thats cool Meph. Could you summarise at all what your materials and method where?

Im gona get mixed up a big spray can of my colour code and try my roof and pillars. I have to bog the pillar slightly no doubt, and smooth the roof as it has rough patches, literally....oh and do something about the hatch, haha.... If it looks decent, id probably do the whole car in white or the blue, but it would depend how the blue comes out, if it doesnt look any good, id go white all over!

In that case, I would have a few little dents to fix if I bothered...mainly smoothing the bonnet and roof still

i did the roller method of my old hood for my ae86 and my results were average. It orange peeled pretty bad but after a clear coat and from far away i think it looked pretty good. Also its tough as nails.

For my hood I just did it as basic as you could imagin. Scuffed the paint n the hood, wen tin my garage and just sprayed the black overtop making sure I did light coats and shook the can a ton. FInish was good, I did like 2 coats I think, maybe 1.5. with a wetsand and a couple coats followed by a buff I bet it would have been near pirfect. when it comes to it your painting with a spray can so you can only expect so much, but take the time and do it right and it will probaby turn out better thn u expect

Would only rust paint work well for this method? Coz i can get the colour of my car mixed up in a normal spray can, but the rust paint is a simple one-stage affair, as in no primer or clear, correct?

did the forum go back in time? I just had a big post here. Long story short im in the process of painting my new fenders with spray cans, wetsanding and buffing and all that good stuff. Ill keep you posted. Buffing quetion: Do i wetsand the final coat wth 1000 grit then buff then clearcoat? or 1000 grit, clearcoat and buff? whats the buffing method, compound then wax or just wax?

Very interested Meph, keep us posted. Take lots of pics my friend.

Hoping to do mine soon in white "Brightside marine paint", which would only involve me fixing my little dents with bog, primering over the bog just to stop the paint soaking in on top, and then adding a few coats of broghtside. Wet sand, and polish. Done!

This stuff doesnt need primer, or clear, it will stick to pretty much anuthing. Hoping to spray it on with a gun, but if i cant il roll it. My car will be all white, cept the door handles. The side plastic strips, pin stripes etc will be gone, and the rear garnish, front lip etc will also be white.

White is so easy to get away with, I may not even have to sand or buff it with this paint

The wetsand smoothed out the paint realllly nicely, I cant wait to get home from work and appaly the second coat. I dont know how many coats it will take, I was hoping to get away with 3 and maybe 2 on the parts that are already red. Im guessing about 10 cans total, I wish I had gotten more on sale, guess I will have to just pay the extra when I get more. Im gonna stick with th blakc hood and red body, then wet sand, polish and wax, Im hoping for good results. The main downside of cans is the lack of paint per can, the quarts of paint are a lo tmore cost effective but harder to appaly well, cans go on great. Im gonna put a tremclad nozzel on the paint I got< i find they work better, what might be best is one of the nozzels that allow you to change the pattern of application.

heres a pic, have done the final wetsand but not the polish or wax, it will look smoother after this is done. The fender was wet with water to show what It should look like. Lets here some thoughts!
