I've got a problem with my overdrive( auto ) it just wont engage. The only way i can get it is to unplug a wire on a rectangular 5 plug junction just above the tranny. its a black wire. Only then i have to start off in 2nd, and then it goes from 1st to 3rd, then i have to shift to D for overdrive. Any help or opinions on this would be a huge help, ive taken it to auto electricans, auto gearbox dudes and all have no idea. the wires from top left clockwise: cream to blue yellow stripe, black to brown yellow stripe, white to purple, brown to blue red stripe, blue to white black stripe, and the last one is emty. I know this doesn't make much sense but if anyone can help...... :?

i had a coolant temp sensor problem that wouldnt allow the tranny to shift into od, you might check into that.

Also, i had to unplug the sensor/ switch on the thermostat housing because the fans weren't turning on, could that have somthing to do with it?

yes it could, you unpluged the sensor/switch and the fans are now working? or do you have them hardwired? replace that switch and it should work(though mine act's up from time to time) its possible its in the auto tranny box(i forget where but there is a little black box that helps the ecu control the tranny, i think)

just to bring this up i was driving my 5th gen auto with o/d and the thermostat was removed so it never got up to operating range and it wouldnt shift into overdrive.

Are engine temp's within operating range?

as well there could be one of the coolant sensors bad that will effect the o/d

what do you mean broken open? i did remove the inner section of the tstat as i was having heating problems and needed to get home, with it like that it sayed under half way mark on the heat and would not shift into o/d

When you go to the store to buy a thermostate, you usually have two options.

    1) buy the thermostat that when it breaks, it stays closed, causing the engine to overheat when driving.

    2) buy the thermostat that when it breaks, it stays open, causing the engine temp to never rise, because the car is using the radiator 24/7.

option 1 is usually cheaper (by a few bux) than option 2. Just make sure your thermostat is not broken, because if it is, it will cause exactly what is going on.

theres a reason it's in there haha. my old t-stat was jammed closed by a rubber seal type thing. not good when it hits 40 C out.
