ive just tried to put in a new head unit. hoping it was plug n play but had to rewire each wire by colour.

Now no power is going to the unit. or its defective but i doubt it.

i didnt disconnect the - battery cable before this. have i done a bad thing?

ive seen this pic but i need more specifics.

can anyone tell me what colour of original wiring goes to the following on my new plug (and seemingly my old plug but its not friggen workin)

yellow - 12 v constant - thicker than other wires. on my loom goes from thick to a bit of thick wire put there by previous owner, connected to thin blue/yellow wire. worked fine on the old unit but maybe not enough power for this one? where do i go to make the this wire thicker gauge from the start?

red - terminal controlled by ignition switch

black - chassis ground. a diagram i saw said brown from loom was ground but this has always been blanked off. i put the new ground spade in place of the old. its on top of another with a brown wire but im not sure what its connected to, if anything. the head unit manual says to place the ground seperately to any other, the old unit worked fine like this, would it really be a problem?

white/blue - when not using an amp, needs to be connected to "auto antenna relay control terminal max 300mA 12V DC" i recently snapped off my antenna as it was buggered and want to delete it entirely as radio here sucks. can i blank this wire or is it important like?

:( Always disconnect the battery before doing any electrical work on your car

Do you no longer have the wiring diagram for your deck?

    My sony was

    Deck Car
    Yellow (PWR) > Blue/Yellow
    Black (Ground) > Brown

The other 2 i am not sure i remember but i think it was

    Red (Ignition) > Grey
    Blue (antena) > Black/Red

Re: new head unit no power arrrrrrr

old head unit was put in by prev owner, no diagrams or anything, but has the same colour wires as the new one so i hoped they would match up.

you say black -> brown for the ground. does the brown wire go thru the loom to ground somewhere? this deck came with a spade connecter on the black wire and i just put it where the old one was, keeping the brown wire blanked off. should i connect black to brown?

pretty sure the others are connected properly but ill double check.

10A fuse in the head unit is ok, ill check the others in the engine bay and kick panels. any specific one to look at?

Check the radio fuse to make sure you didn't blow it out when rewiring with the battery connected. IIRC, it's connected with the dome light.

solved - new head unit no power arrrrrrr

solved - it was the 15A radio fuse next to the battery. got it cranking now, thanks all!

Re: new question - gasket and smells

hi got a couple more questions

Need a new sump gasket, ive heard there is a gasket but toyota said to use gasket in a can stuff. advice?

Got a couple of smells while driving and idling
the cars not leaking engine oil but is leaking power steering oil, and burns a bit of engine oil from time to time.

smells like rank old oil burning now n then during normal driving, might just need a really good degrease or exhaust checked out.

ive noticed every few days a sulphur (rotten eggs) smell when driving along or idling.
apparently my cat is gutted, ive heard the cat can give off this smell. a mate has suggested its my brake pads.

    what are the usual suspects?

    thanks.

Sump gasket is the can stuff, thats how MR T does it.

Sulphur smell more than likely Cat

unusual to smell PAS fluid it normally drips down via the arb, not the exhaust. More than likely blocked cam cover and breather causing the smell.

    thanks for the help

got a specific gasketinacan i should look for?

recommend a new cat? or is it worth keeping it how it is or making it straight through if its not already?

blocked cam cover and breather. do you mean the vacuum hoses? how do i clear this? pics?

    more info
car has been idling low when at operating temp. drops to ~600rpm when in neutral. thinking egr has been removed half arsed. when i got the car my egr system was blocked off at the headers but im not sure what other connections to block off. ive seen pics on here of egr blanking plates on the head near the dizzy, its been like it is for 2 engines and 5 years.

thanks i had a look at that when troubleshooting. in the end i had the wires all right - easy as they were the same colours on my old head unit plug. the trick was not removing the - battery cable before i messed around, blew the radio fuse next to the battery. easy fix thanks all.

as far as the smells go, im going to remove the cam covers and see whats inside that could be blocked, never looked in there before. can i clear out the charcoal canister and any other components?

i'll get the exhaust checked out. id like headers back new exhaust but pretty pricey for the current state of engine i have. might have to put up with the sulpher smell a while while the money goes to running gear.

ill post as i find the culprits.

    cheers.

Just don't try using that diagram with a JDM model - blows the radio every time!
The only thing that's the same colours is the front speakers?

The charcoal canister can't be opened - throw it away if you can

The smell could be tuning related (too rich?) or the brand of fuel (European fuel smells awful)
also the cat may be blocked or burning inside.

Try some injector cleaner for now, also disconnect the cold start injector for a while and see if it goes away.

i havnt wired the new o2 sensor yet ill get to that and see what difference it makes - youre right i think i am running rich. see how cleaner goes too.

id like to get rid of all emissions stuff that is still there, egr is blocked off from the headers. what holes and hoses do i need to plug and reroute for the charcoal canister? thanks.

I just chucked it and blocked the T/B & vent pipe, you have EGR so I'm not sure
    how it's routed?

    Did u know?
    Push starting ruins a cat
    Too rich ruins a cat
Water splashes can ruin a cat
    Scary
