hi all. Just wanted to get acquainted with everyone. I just purchased one with135k and this will be my first st162. What are the common things i need to look out for in terms of usual wear and tear for this car given the mileage? For one i know it's not blowing any heat but ac is cold. Next, it has Some rust spots in the corner of the wheel wells. Clutch may need some replacement soon. Red interior is not my cup of tea. Is there any leak spots i need to watch out for? Pretty much the car is in running condition and all power options like seat adjust sunroof etc. are working. Exterior is not the best and will truly need some repainting. Any links or other useful information about the car is highly appreciated.

    I'll post pics soon.

Hey! How's it goin! Welcome to the board.

Check the suspension, never hurts. 135k miles may want to start refreshing the suspension (struts, bushings, tie rods, like that stuff). When you do the clutch, do the rear main seal. You're in there, it's 5 more bolts. Leaking...in the liftback you need to watch the antenna hole and around the windows/rear hatch.

Welcome to the Site!!! Here you will find any and everything about the ST162! Keep an Eye on the Power Steering as it is notorious for leaking on these cars. Im sure some of the more experienced guys can tell you more.

a few common things: ps leak, starter issues (either not spinning or making a grinding noise), rear windows leak, spare tire area rust, and as you've mentioned, heat doesn't work)

    for the heater:
the control box for the heat/cold is behind the radio, above the ECU. the best way to access is sticking your head near the gas pedal. you should be looking for a wire that is covered in a purple protector (i've seen them also in black) that leads to the firewall. if you look under the hood near the firewall, you'll see that it controls the flow of coolant for the heater. this wire tends to gunk up, so what i did was unhook both ends of it and use some sort of lube (i used bicycle chain lube) while moving the wire back and forth until it is easier to move. try that and see if that works. if it doesn't then it's something electrical.

Im in northern virginia. Btw, anybody knows where i can find some tail lights for liftback? I need one since my passenger side tail light has a crack.

Ill try to post some pics over the weekend. Alo is it safe to assume that the reason why the car is starting intermittently ia due to the starter not getting enough juice? Is it uncommon that it will only start is when you use jumper cables? The prior owner claimed it was the battery and not starter.

Welcome!Look forward to some pics. All the above are spot on,especially the PAS hydraulic pipe/seals.Also bodywise check where the wings bolt on to the underside of the body.Ill bet if you (carefully) unbolt them(after soaking in WD40) theres a ton of crud under there.Another good rust trap is where the toolkit etc is in the back, stick your hand down there as if the tailgate has been leaking, water sits in there .This is all worse case scenario stuff, but you got to look!Interested in seeing this red interior, havent seen one in UK

it's hideous... but heck, it's also unique... if I don't get the hang of it, I might dye out the red carpet and maybe color the plasic parts... is our car even considered a sports car?

every gear has its own synchro, check for fluid? there's a bolt in front of the transmission that's pointing downward in a 45 degree angle that lets you stick your finger in as a dipstick to check for fluid level and condition. i wonder if it just had low fluid.

replacing the whole thing may be better, especially since we can use the later 5s-fe transmission is a nice thing knowing that you have a newer trans. i've put in a 1997 5sfe s54 trans to my 87, but you need the 3sfe/5sfe/3sgte/1mzfe/3mzfe starter and 5sfe/3sgte flywheel and you need to take the clutch fork from the old trans if you aren't replacing the clutch/pressure plate

Stig, you are the god. Thank you for the reading. Definitely gave me preliminary ideas.

Later this afternoon I'll try to flush/fill my tranny using gearbox oil and hopfully that will lessen, if not eliminate the grinding. Nonetheless, how much does it usually cost to have the s53 box rebuilt? Is it practical/economical to have it rebuilt or just buy a used one to bolt on? For the price I got the car, I'm willing to spend up to 1500 for overall repairs including paint job, supspension bushings, struts... I want to own and keep the car but if the cost to repair the transmission alone is unreasonable, I may have to think twice...

To have your box repaired by someone else is unreasonable. Do it yourself and you can easy spend $1000 on parts.
Best is to find one from a later model, the later the better.

I guess it got hot due to lack of oil?

Got new battery and starter is ok. Did the tranny flush and got about 2.5qtz of atf. When i filled it, it didnt over fill but i already used more than 4qtz already. The grind is still there. Im guessing the syncros are toast? Is it even reasonable to get it rebuilt by a shop or can i diy it? How much sgould i busget if i have a shop do it vs if i do it myself plus the time? What patts do i need for a rebuild?

Stig, what did u mean find a later model tranny?

also, drive it for a bit to see if the grind goes away after a while.

I filled the tranny with almost a gallon of gearbox oil but still grinds. Wouldnt it be easier to just rebuild the tranny in terms of minimizing extra needed parts to make a 5sfe tranny fit my celica? Where can i buy a rebuild kit for the the tranny and usually how much does it cost? Any diy write up rebuilding?
