    Hey guys how's it going??

My dad's bosses son just baught a first gen mr2. The guy who sold it to him said the engine was nocking when he parked it last and that the engine probably needed to be raplaced.
    Anyway, .. here's what's happend.

    - Initially we turned over the engine and it wanted to fire but leaked gas
    - found a gas line to the injector manifold missing a bolt/injector squirting fuel all over
    - got a bolt from scrapyard, fixed it
    - started it up yesterday and ran it for about 30 seconds
    - runs beautiful if you can block out the rattling from who knows where
    - coming out the exhaust is a nice even sound and no smoke
    - it started overheating after 30 seconds so we shut it down and found both hoses to the rad disconnected under the car (rad is in the front under the hood so these hoses run the full length underneath)
    - this is now fixed and we'll start it again this weekend.
    - the rattling is so loud it is almost unbearable but if it was a valve train or crankshaft related item I cannot see that it would start so easy and run so smooth.
    - I am used to big cast iron V8's so the noise is hard to diagnose, however I am thinking waterpump for starters.
    - It sounds like marbles rolling around inside the block but very hard to tell where from, although I am thinking more from the front of the block. I am using a hose in my ear and pointing it to different sections to try and find it.
    - If unable to pin point we are going to take out the waterpump, look at the timing belt, etc. and we may find something.

Anyone have any ideas? I haven't heard the sound first hand, so I can't really diagnose the problem.

  2. Borescope it. and Pop off the valve covers to at least get a basic inspection covered. Change the oil and look for chunks o' metal.

Sounds like some major engine knock going on. Probably threw a rod. Time for a motor.

agreed on either motor knock or destroyed crank pulley.

take off the oil pan and take a look. gaskets are cheap either way.

u could have thrown a bearing, or burnt a hole in the side of one of your pistons (probably 3rd cylinder) and a peice of metal could be ratting around somewhere.

either way, u 99.9% definately need a new motor or a rebuild at least

    Thanks for the into guys.
We already have a new motor for the car, but we are trying to salvage this one before putting it in. I'm pretty sure one of the rod bearings is shot. Ill figure it out tomorrow, haven't had much time to look at it.

.. we figure it's probably a rob bearing. The engine is coming out of the car anyway and we'll take it apart after the new engine's put in.

Where'd you get those hearders from and how makes them?
