Hi all, i inherited my fathers 88 celica gt coupe that he had driven into the ground since new....ive had it now for 3 years and done alot of mods (agx on front gr2s on rear ,cut coils 16" enkeis , ansa exhaust .....lots of maintenance. rear disc swap from a gts ( redrilled rotors to fit 4x100)...thats the background on the car the background on me is im a 32 year old celica fanatic ive owned over ten in my life time all rwd ...but im addicted to my little fwd, i still own an 84 gts that i swapped a 7mgte in. ok enough about my introduction now for the questions....my motor is tired and thanks to this site im planning a 1mzfe swap my question is which trans should i go with......i have a line on a camry/solara fwd v6 e153. But its a small fortune, for much less i can get a e153 with lsd from a japanese spec turbo mr2....my question is in a fwd is a limited slip even a good idea(i live in spokane wash and this is my driver....lots of snow) and if it is beneficial how do i convert it to fwd use. i have read articles on 1st gen mr2 sites going the other way (converting fwd to mr2 duty) im wondering if its possible or has been even written up on here......in conclusion you guys are awesome and im proud to be a member of such an awesome site ....thank you
ok is it worth the fab work, or should i go with the solara trans? im not affraid of work and i think the lsd would be awesome. I drove a sentra ser with one and you couldnt burn a tire if you tried ...very cool.
welcome to the site...another pnw owner here.....i live in oregon , theres 2 members that live in the Seattle / Tacoma area i dont have any info on the tranny tho.
LSD is definitely good for FWD cars too. Helps on understeer when cornering, and I think it helps in the snow too. Me too have an LSD equipped box from an MR2. The biggest issue in fitting is that the shift cables have to be mounted on the other side. But it can be done.
here is the catch: you'll need a st165 shift cable set/upper trans mount just to mount the thing in there. the solara trans is easy to work with because it's already setup for fwd while the mr2 trans will need the shift linkage all swapped around.
do i need the fwd shift shaft from the solara or is it a matter of just turning it around? other then that you guys have really made my decision easier....definately going with the mr2 trans. Thanx again to all of you, as i said before never got into this whole forum thing and now that im here it is awesome.
MR2 has the selector facing forward and the rear is a blank cap You have to remove the selector assy, plug the front hole and fit a Solara/GT4 selector plus the cables, linkages and cable bracket. Pretty straightforward - if you can find the bits! If it's electronic you will need to swap the speedo drive as well
thank you all so much i guess im on the hunt for a long list of goods. if any of ya have a line on any of the goods ill need please pm me.....thanx to all that posted.
