k so as other post will tell you i fixed the power issue (was a crappy painted terminal connector). however now my issue is that i think my timing belt is dead (not sure if broken). when i try to start the car (i have enough if the bolts out of top timing cover to be able to see the belt *very old glossed and cracked going to replace anyway*) it doesnt turn. now a freind of mine said he looks @ his moms (newer) toyota last night and her belt didnt turn until he shifted into gear. so know i am not sure. if my engine is toast or if the timing belt just broke. also if it did break it was running when it happened and i have heard horror stories with engine totalling when this happens is this the case with a (1g *i think its 1g anyway) 3s-fe. I love my toyota and im looking todo a swap but this is my only car so i must get it running. I dont want to have to buy another car and be stuck in payments again lol
If its a timing belt, then it should move on start-up. If it does not move on startup, then you have a problem. I don't remember if the 3SFE is an interferance motor or not. For some reason I don't think it is, so you should be alright. The horror stories you hear about are from cars with the interferance motors, where when the timing belt breaks, the pistons wack the head and bend the the valves.
s-series motors are noninterference....theres several ways to see if your belt is broken, crank it and see if theres camshaft movement ,check to see if the dizzy is spinning, and visually inspect the belt.
okay any ideas how long it should take to change the belt. I have haynes manual, doesnt give time est. also it says i have to support the engine while i remove the motor mount so i can change the belt - whats the best way todo this (jack under oil pan?).
shouldnt take more then a few hours...put a block of wood on the jack then jack the jack up on the pan.
okay i will do that this weekend and hopefully bring the celica back to life. also would any of you guys know anything about this..(sorta related i think) after my car stopped running i starting leaking coolant from the water pump area (its just a steady drip not a gushing flood lol) i am wondering does the water pump usually go out when the belt does and if so would it leak coolant?
it's about a 4 hour job. just have someone crank it while you look. no movement equals boken belt. when you get all the covers off and the belt off (if broken) check the cam gear and make sure it spins.
also how would i know if i am a few teeth off, would the car run?. it runs now but as i do not have a timing light i cannot verify anything. it doesnt seem to run bad @ all. however it does seem i am missing a small amount of power (very small amount)
oh also the belt wasnt broken but there was about 3 inches where there was no more teeth lol. I am going to pull belt off again in the morning and just reverify TDC and see if i can recover lost power.
