I have an 87 gt connvertible with the 3sfe and electric automatic trans, the ranges go as such P,R,N,D,2,L
ive found that starting off the line using L allows you to start in first without having to wait for the automatic to downshift, and stays in first until you shift to 2 which forces it to stay in second until you shift to drive, this makes it much faster off the line and you dont have to put the accelerator all the way to the floor, but im wondering if this is bad for the car in any way. mind you, i only use this technique once every few days or so, and only off the line at stop lights and such
    opinions?

i asked my dad as well (he's not as knowlegable about celicas as you guys) and he said its harmless, now im confused, is it something just with that trans that makes it break when you do that?

its hurtful when your gunning it yes....in not racing applications it will not hurt your car but its not good judgement.....its mainly for hill climbs and stuff

Very bad for the clutches in your box.
L is only supposed to be used when you are stuck.
Locking it in gear is supposed to be used when towing or uphill when the box can't decide which gear to use
I've also seen guys redline and then throw it into gear spinning the wheels, only a matter of time before it starts slipping and you need a new box.
Replacing clutches is not easy or cheap on these and they tend to break internal parts too
