Lots of Frustrations from a ROOKIE

Wassup yall?? I am new to the site and definitely new to fixing cars. To begin, I took on a project car this past month before school started. It was a free 89 ST shell given to me and all it really needed was an engine. So, I threw in a 3SFE in it just for daily use and nothing special except to look cool in it too! :D But I may have made the biggest mistake. A shop later told me that I was supposed to have stripped the newer engine and put in the old stuff like the intake and exhaust manifold. Anyways, I completed the swap without knowing to do such thing and suspected a leak from my High Pressure Hose that connects from the Power Steering to the top of the engine bay in front of the passenger side. It made hissing sounds and frustrated me really bad. When I sit inside the car while warming up my car, I turn the wheel left and right and the idle pops up until I center the wheel back. I haven't gotten to fix it yet and decided to take the car to a shop to have them look at it. Fortunately or Unfortunately, the hissing sound actually came from my Fuel Pressure Regulator. He took off one of the hoses and the noise stopped but RPM jumped around 2000. So now the car is sitting at home with all hoses plugged in where I thought it should and really want to know where I should begin.

Another big mistake I made was I messed with the IACV to lower my RPM... :( When starting is sits at around 1800 and later get down to about 900-1100 after 5 mins.

Any help would be very much appreciated and if any Seattle peeps are available, I would be more than happy to get help from you guys.

    Welcome to the boards
The Steering HP hose leaking is something we've all had, they need changing every 20yrs.
It's a sign you may have cracked vacumm lines as well?

So you got a new pressure regulator?
I can't help as my JDM FE has no EGR etc, just look through the listings for now as it's come up
    several times before

You're not alone, I'm sure someone here will guide you

I believe this is quite normal, on a Cold Start the engine will have higher RPMs after it has warmed up it drops down to a regular rate.

Didn't see that part in that massive paragraph
Thought it was idling at 2000 rpm?

Yes it's normal, warm idle should be 800-1000 rpm
Yes it's normal for revs to change when the steering pump is under load,
if the belt is loose it can make strange noises as well

Stop listening to mechanics and get it serviced by a dealer

Without having changed the old manifolds into the newer engine, the mechanic also mentioned that it was impossible for me to get a diagnostics test ran due to that mistake. The car seem to run fine with the exception of the previous postings. So before going to a dealer, should I start over and exchange the manifolds?

Stig: the Power steering doesn't seem to make any noise, the belt was loose at one time but I have already fixed that issue. So my next step would be replacing the hose. I will most likely follow the steps done by Rick89.

Also, are there any coupons available out there for Toyota's Service?

    Yeah, pop into my garage
    LOL

The only thing on the manifold is the Throttle body (T/B), yeah it's advisable to
swap it over but as this was a running motor that shouldn't be an issue.

    Swap the T/B (4 bolts) & see if there's a difference?

Get that hose changed ASAP, it's busy making a mess down there and eating up all your rubbers

What's the story with the fuel regulator? faulty or not? where's your old one?

The story with the Fuel Regulator is where the hissing sound is coming from. I thought all along it was my PS, but it's coming from one of the vac lines. When I removed one of them, the hissing sound stopped but the RPM jumped to about 2000. So, at this time I have all vacuum hoses back in position waiting for more info before I change it. Is there a way for me to test this to see if it's faulty or not?

Also, I can't seem to find where my water temperature sensor needs to be plugged into. It disables my Radiator to function correctly but I have made a toggle switch for the fans.

    Thanks again!

ok... i had a fuel prob due to my regulator hose which goes onto the nd of your fuel rail, ils that stupy thing at the end that holds a diafram!

Not possible (for a vac pipe to affect the regulator), check your big rubber inlet pipe and vac pipes for cracks & leaks

The temp sender is on the alu pipe in front of your dizzy - works the temp gauge only!
The fan sender is right under your alternator, disconnect it and the fan should come on, ground it and the fan goes off.
If it still won't come on, check the fan fuses and swap the fan relays.

Still no joy? - check your harness running around the head, if it is chafed a wire might be grounding to earth

I am going to attempt to remove my PS pump this weekend and repair that hose before looking into the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I have lost a great amount of fluid causing grinding sounds when turning. I have the car parked in the driveway and wanted to know if I should add fluid at this time even though I won't be driving it?? Sorry for all the noob questions and thanks a lot for the assistance.

If you're not going to be driving it and intend to repair the PS line or pump, don't bother filling it up again. You'll have to drain it anyways. Sent you a PM.

I attempted to take out the PS pump today but totally failed. I will try again tomorrow morning as soon as the sun rises. Also, I am having problems getting my pictures up. And I found exactly where the 'hissing' sound I have been talking about and a loose wire underneath the intake manifold. I know pictures will be very helpful at this stage.

^It ain't easy taking the PS pump out, especially the first time. My first time took me about 3 hours. Last week I got it out in roughly an hour. Post up if you need help, it's a bitch. Good luck with it!

Just wait till you have the Brake & clutch cylinders totally blocking access from the top.....

    Interested to see what's hissing

Why are you removing the pump? I changed the hose without removing it and the RHD crap in the way

I am taking out the pump to replace the Hi-Pressure Hose. It leaks from the topside that sits in front of the passenger side.

The hissing sound is coming from Vacuum Sensor that connects from the Fuel Pump Regulator. It's the piece that attaches right in front of the passenger. Has anyone else had problems with it? Otherwise, this may be the last puzzle for me to complete my swap. Thanks

*I thought I posted this on general info, but how do you post pics?*

What Kev means is create a Photobucket account, upload your pics there-
    http://www.Photobucket.com

Then click "IMG" and copy the photobucket address of each pic between the brackets, remember to change to lower case and keep the format or they don't work ie = good, [IMG] = fail

Keep pics to 800x600, works well enough for the site

Another quick way to post pictures is buy using http://www.imageshack.us. You don't need to be a member, and you can resize stuff when you upload them.
